HOW do I start off seeds/seedlings in rockwool in Easy2Grow auto kit?

I've been planning on using it but the very few instructions that came with it have me comfused

Say I use it to start seeds off in rockwool with soil - HOW do I keep them watered when the system uses an auto-watering pump right at the bottom of the pots? Do I place the rockwool at the bottom...? Or at the top? (meaning the water (coming in through the bottom) won't be getting to the roots) :wall:

I can't figure it out...

I have personally used the Easy2Grow system, here is my recommendation:

1)Start the seeds in a smaller container, like a solo cup.

2)Grow the plants in the solo cups until they develop a nice root mass, 2-4 weeks, hand watering/feeding every 3-5 days

3)Transplant your babies into the auto-watering pots. I would put 3 inches of perilite in the bottom of the pot. This perilite will wick the water upwards, towards the thirsty and eager root mass your plants developed in the solo cups. This will be three inches less deep the roots have to penetrate before they are able to start drinking from the reservoir.

If you just planted the seeds in the autopot they wouldn't be able to get enough water from the reservoir in the bottom. Their tiny roots would be to far from the water and the water wouldn't be able to wick upwards fast enough to keep them happy. I hope this helps. I think that the autopots are pretty great.

Hey, how does the water drain from the Easy2Grow? Is it basically just an auto-watering system? No return feed on the nutrient?

No, these is no return of the nutrients to the reservoir. The valve has two parts basically. One part allows water to fill the base of the system to a certain level. The second part doesn't allow the first part to add more water to the base until all of the water/nute solution has been wicked up into the media. If you looked at a graph of the amount of water in the base it would look like a saw tooth pattern. The base fills with one inch of water, the plant slowly sucks up that inch, and when the base is empty it fills back up with more water. It works really well, you just have to make sure that the vavles don't get clogged with any sort of algae growth or anything, and chunky stuff like guano and molasses with gum it up really bad too. Stick with mineral based nutes like the GH series.

P.S. Protip: put and airstone in the reservoir and also in the bottom of each pot under an upside down 2" or 3" net pot (to keep soil/coco/roots from clogging it). This added oxygen is a real boost. The Easy2Grow people market their own accessories that are pretty much the exact same thing, but are much more expensive.
