HLG 550 V1 driver change

Hi Currently I have the basic first version of the HLG 550 V1 running HLG-480H-C2100A no reds 3000k, (mine keep failing,blinking off and on).


Can I swap it for HLG-600H-54B (as I heard the 600 watt ones maybe more reliable)


Also Id like a bit more light in the 4x4, not concerned about power usage just max light output.

Any disadvantages? or is there a way to drive the lights even harder with a different driver, will the heat sink cope ok, will there be much gain.

What are my Driver options?

Im guessing

Meanwell HLG-480-54A (or B)
Meanwell HLG-480-2100A (or B)
Meanwell HLG-480-2800A (or B)
Meanwell HLG-600-54A (or B)
Inventronics EUD-600S280DT
Inventronics EUD-480S280DT

But this isn't within my field of experience

If they use similar panels you will need to rewire it as 4 in parallel
I'd check with HLG customer support... Stephen is a busy boy these days.

I make a similar configuration light, 5 x288 diodes, but I always use the voltage-controlled ones, I know the HLG board takes the next voltage up form the 48V series I use but I think they have a longer string or something.

By using more driver than diodes like you want to do you will reduce the efficiency, closer to 100% load is optimal.
I'm not really sure why they went with the constant current drivers over the rest of the HLG series.

It is likely your driver is just faulty, the 480H series is their least reliable one....

Contact Stephen. I heard talk about a batch problem with the 480s on some 550s. But it was fairly recent iirc it might be that your unit is just a faulty driver. They should come with 7 y warranty from meanwell, even if you get a new driver you may be able to get this current one fixed.

On hlg600: upping the wattage might be too much for the current heat sink, id place the driver remotely and maybe some fanning on the alu plate to help dissipation. Overheating may very well be the problem of the current driver.

Thanks Guys , sounds like the easiest option/best option is to keep with the same driver.
HLG sent me a new driver under warranty they were great, I havent fitted it yet was just wondering if I could fit the HLG-600H-54B for more light output/reliability as Ive had 2 fail so far, and the downtime is costly mid grow.. Ill buy a spare driver.

Will place the driver remotely and off the heatsink.

I see what you mean, no... the driver isn't "pushing" out 600W...
A load draws a certain amount of power (ohms law), So you can use less power than a driver's max (as long as it is within limits of the lower range on the datasheet)


Think of it like you have food for 6 children (max rating of the driver) as long as the kids eat a certain amount of food each day, it won't go stale... if 6 kids want food you got it covered... if you add a 7th child, each of the old 6, is now getting a fraction less so that all 7 gets the same amount of food, and if you only had 3 kids, well you have enough food for them, but you might start snacking on the leftover food so you lose some efficiency
