High Grading Marijuana to increase selling price?

I couldn't find this on the search first pages, but it must be a common question.

Marijuana is legal in CA now, so I went to a dispensary and asked what was the highest percentage they had of trichomes.

38%!!!! I'm lucky to grow 20%

I looked at it, and it was indeed super crowded with trichomes. But all the pieces were tiny. No big buds, just little subbuds. Like someone had looked the bud over, and high graded it.

I noticed something similiar on some outdoor plants. One area looked like a bird had pooped on it, but when I looked closer, it simply had more trichomes there.

Do sellers "create" higher trichome percentages using picking techniques, such as leaving out any big stems?

They tend to test the buds with the highest frost and then get to label all that strain so high.

The plants are not consistent bud to bud. It’s marketing.

Also the shame is high thc bud is not usually better than a good balanced mid to high flower. Maybe the full recipe of canabanoids matters more?

I was just reading that on the net, like 15 minutes ago! It was an article saying some stoners prefer lower grades of marijuana. I found it when I tried to find the answer about high grading.

I'll have to try that out tonight. I've been smoking the "best" the dispensary has, and it's still not all that good. At least, not compared to edibles.

I'll pull out the old 14% lowryder sitting in a mason jar and see what's up.

So, have you tried any varieties which are not technically high trichome, but found them to be superior? Or is it how it's grown and harvested that determines the mix?

It is always more the grow than the strain. Most dispensary weed sucks because it is from a cash crop. Schedules and greed are no good for plant potential.

I wouldn’t compare lowryder with an og or something but from a store you never known.

My first Grow was auto northern lights like many and it beat the shit out of the local dispensaries so bad I got a contract with one back then. Lol. They didn’t believe it was an auto.

Good to hear. I just made 500 or so Northern Lights Auto seeds (S1+S1 = S2 I guess???). Maybe I'll grow them for pot instead of seeds now. I'd switched to growing only Amnesia Haze because of how sugary it looks.

Anything I can grow that'll yield 1 pound, and have > 20% (ok, I'm asking for too much).

It's kind of slow to build up a kief ball for professional pressing, using autoflower plants that only harvest 1 ounce, being limited to 6 plants here.

I would want to grow the amnesia haze before the auto NL for sure. In fact I wish I had some seeds. That sounds great.

Where you at? Sure would be nice to have someone test if my seeds seem like S2s.

One time I sent a grow light to someone so he could evaluate it for me, and because it was in the grow room with all the seeds, a whole bunch of them must have fell in there accidentally, along with some dry dirt. So I've got plenty of seeds to spare.

The numbers are kind of bullshit in terms of quality of high. I can smoke some high percentage shit and quickly get tolerant to it. Switch to something with lower numbers and get higher than the high number stuff. So I think the key to daily use is to have a nice 5 to 10 strain rotation going so you are always switching it up.

Balance in cannabinoids is key. A lot of synergies in the mix.

I also think natural sunlight makes a difference in quality of the high, but I got no data to prove it.

Lol. You can’t test seeds without a dna lab. Just grow some and if you like them great.

I think talk of sharing weed or seed here is against the unposted rules of the site. At least I think the rules are not posted, I've never stumbled upon them. But welcome! :bigjoint:

Plenty of data to prove it. It’s from the uvb. But you can add it to your room.

Also I still think indoor usually wins if the Grow goes well because of the more stable environment.

I'm curious if you can sprinkle some kief on your sample buds and get away with it without lab detecting?

I can grow denser bud under HID than the limited sun I get in my gh. But a greenhouse can be made to perform pretty consistent and the high is great. I've never supplemented with UVB indoors so maybe that explains it.

I call BS on 38%. That is a lab that is way out of band. Remember that in CA a lab can be off by as much as 30% and still meet the compliance regs. So how much faith do you have in a number that is +/- 30%?

That's a bummer. I hope it changes when it's legal all over the USA. I have thousands of autoflower seeds now, and some are as old as that California law. I just sprouted some of the oldest, and the little shells are too dry and get stuck. You have to help them out. Maybe that's why some people like to soak seeds in water overnight?

I thought I'd sell them to dispensaries before they got too old to sprout. But you have to get a speciality growers license ($500) to sell them, and then run them through some kind of clearing house, to make sure they're blessed by California law. Possibly to prevent south american cartel growers from profiting?

Besides not being free to sell any product they can acquire, the dispensaries also have to "sell out their inventory" before they can buy more. I'm not sure what that means, but I guess the law tries to prevent diverted merchandise.

Seems all in all like a well written law. Although it has one bad aspect. The dispensaries used to sell 10X chocolate bars. I'm not sure what 10X meant, but if you ate half of one of those, you were brave.

Now, all edibles are limited to 100mg.
