Canadians eat or smoke anywhere between 400 to 1,600 tonnes of cannabis per year, according to a few months of sewage samples examined for the federal government.

The wide-ranging estimate, released by Statistics Canada on Thursday, is the first look at cannabis use through a new technique called wastewater-based epidemiology. The tests involve gauging traces of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, at 15 wastewater treatment plants in five different cities, including Vancouver.

Story Continues Below

After cannabis is metabolized in the body, traces of THC are left behind in human waste. Scientists collected wastewater on the second week of each month from March to August this year – before cannabis was legalized in Canada on Oct. 17.

As expected, more cannabis is consumed in Canada’s larger cities. Montreal had the highest rate of consumption at roughly 1,922 grams per week, according to the analysis. Toronto had the second highest at 1,257 grams, followed by Vancouver with 721 grams.

The sample tests were meant to overcome under-reporting by cannabis users, often caused by the stigma of the drug and reluctance for people to admit their illegal purchases.

“One consequence of under-reporting is that the size of the black market for cannabis will be similarly underestimated,” the report reads.

“As a result, without a direct measurement of cannabis consumption, the reduction of the black market for cannabis – one of the objectives of the legalization of non-medical cannabis – will be hard to track.”

While the estimates offer a first look at the truth behind cannabis use, Statistics Canada said the numbers are experimental and that more information is needed, such as how much of the drug is excreted, its potency and the way the drug is consumed. Other factors to consider include different chemicals in the various treatment plants themselves.

“In the case of cannabis, there are many different kinds of products, with different THC potency levels, and this adds further complexity to estimation methods,” the report reads.

Sampling will continue until the spring of 2019.

in all reality, we shouldn't tell them they're insanely wrong.....let them think what they want to think....let them supply cities with grossly undersized stocks, because their tests are badly flawed....and we can step in and supply what's needed.....the "black market"......just folks who want to get high, and have some control of what we put in our bodies.....

i'm not a Canadian, but i lived in Mn. for a long time, and spent many pleasant days north of the border. we camped at Banff when i was a kid, canoed on lake Morain. made hundreds of beer runs when we were teenagers. to this day, moosehead is still my favorite beer, and american beer is useless watered down crap.....so while i'm not Canadian, i have fond memories and good wishes.
do you think someone here should point out this thread, and a couple of others, to someone in the administration? some very good points are made here, that i'm sure they haven't thought about, and probably never will, because they're people who don't indulge in weed.
people who don't indulge, don't enlighten themselves about the subject. they read bullshit articles by other non indulgers, and believe it, because they're completely ignorant about it.
they just seem to have a lot of nonsensical rules, some of which contradict each other, and no controls in place. there should be one lab used for all government testing, and that lab should be checked on a regular basis. there should be a nationwide set of base rules, with options each province should pick. cities don't get a say in whether or not it can happen in their city...if it's a legal business, telling them they can't operate in your city is discrimination, and there should be several quick, brutal, savage lawsuits, settling it asap. either it's legal, or it's not...not here and there......
and who sets the limits? first you couldn't grow any..

"Health Canada officials said in a technical briefing Thursday afternoon this "limited amount" people can grow at their home will be linked to the daily amount of cannabis a patient is prescribed.

For example, someone prescribed a gram a day could grow two plants outdoors or five plants indoors to be able to supply themselves, Health Canada said, since plants grown outdoors yield more supply than indoor plants."

more assery....they don't know what the fuck they're talking about....SOME people can grow giant trees outside, and some can't....some people can grow the same giant trees inside....i'll put a good indoor scrog up against most people's outdoor grows...i grow 5 plants indoor,(in flower, have about the same vegging) that's what fits in my room. i've got a good perpetual cycle going, and i pull one every ten days to two weeks, get around a qp off of each one...thats well over 100 grams every ten to fourteen days. or at least ten grams a day.
and i'm not the best grower out there. i'd say i'm firmly in the middle, maybe even a little above that, but there are people out there sooo much better than i am. they would be getting at least 50% more, maybe more....
so even if you aren't a good grower, 5 indoor plants should supply you with at least twice what you're prescribed.
if they had any sense whatsoever, they would start dealing with international seed banks like dutch passion, the Vault, hell, even Canuck, get an agreement from the companies to stop shipping to private addresses, and become the sole distributors of seeds in canada.
set up a clone bank in major cities, get good growers to run them, give them good mothers from the same stock, all of Canada could be smoking weed from the same clones in a few months, everyone would know the genetics, but still get a different experience, because each grower is going to pull a different end product....
i sit here for ten minutes and all of this occurs to me....who the fuck is in charge of weed in Canada? they sure don't seem to be putting much thought into it....

Very well said. To answer your question as to who is in charge of weed in Canada. One of them is a former police chief of 30+ years, so yeah.....the rest are bureaucrats with zero knowledge on cannabis. As for seeds, they've set themselves up for a monopoly. All seeds and clones must be sourced from LPs. Any new LPs have to get it from the original group of LPs. So to put it extremely sarcastically, I would expect nothing but the best genetic selection....

Especially given their current track record.

this chart......why different amounts in storage for inside and outside? if you're allowed a certain amount per day, what does it matter where it's grown? the only reason i can think of to allow more for outside is the limited growing season? did they actually take something into account in their otherwise apparently random decision making process? is the rare use of common sense whats throwing me off?
....but then you get to that last column...mixed storage...how does one keep track of that? do your inspectors have the expertise to tell weed grown indoors to weed grown outdoors? it's all just silly regulations, with no real purpose. give them a storage limit, and either let them grow weed or not....as long as they don't go over their limit, the rest is complete and total unenforceable bullshit....
