lol I am as proficient with a tap and soldering iron as anyone on these forums should I choose to go that route.
It will be interesting to see what the led market brings in the coming year

I would like to see more Single Diode DIY's

I think rather than the guys on here that are sharp with all the led tech beating each other up trying to start their own panel companies, why doesn't one of you just start a DIY LED PARTS supplier?
Stock all these popular items for those who may want to build their own but the thought of dealing direct with china and long delivery times turns them off?

I've been wanting to grow my own for years, but never liked the heat generated by hps lights and ballasts and the fact my job can keep me away from home for 12-15 hours a day.
I think worst case scenario probably more than I should, so the fire hazard element really scared me.

That's the main reason I find LED lighting more appealing, it just gives me more peace of mind, justified or not. Learning about diy and efficiency from everyone on RIU has made it even more of an easy decision to go this route. I feel fortunate to have only bought a 167.00 mars light before deciding on the DIY COB path. I credit this forum and it's members for saving money,time and safety.

I really like the forum too. But DIY ans safety, these don't go together often there.

You mean like JimmyIndicas recent Fired Egg Cob adventure?
I have a gut feeling there is a lot more of this coming. Particularly with the cobs being exposed to grow room environments by not having a lens over them

My question to you would be - how often have you heard of a warehouse or other industrial building burning down due to all of the HID lights scattered throughout the building?
I think it is all about proper installation. I would bet that a 1000W HPS in a top brand hood with glass left in tact is safer than just about all of the DIY fixtures you are seeing on the forum.

Maybe not, but I feel some of the in depth step by step builds on here have definitely given me a better understanding of what to do and not do, thus leading to to a safer diy build.

You may be right, I don't know, I'm a beginner, a novice, and was just giving my honest point of view as such. I don't live in a warehouse, I live in a tiny home with a closet for a grow area, so sorry if my concerns for heat output are wrong or offend you. I would like to read up on that JimmeyIndicas fire thread. I want to learn more so I can be as safe as I can.

I don't think LED has lost it's cool, it's very appealing to many of us with smaller grows in our homes.

I thought he did AT600 vs 1000W HPS? not seen him do one against the COBs as far as im aware ( i may be wrong tho lol)
maybe not in a side by side, not sure but GG has definitely moved from apache to his own cree3070 cobs en masse.

not mine! but valid point.

Actually I think if built reasonably well, a cob fixture is safer than a T5 fixture. Also safer than HID. The concentration of heat and the tendency for HID bulbs to occasionally shatter, but your right some of the DIY I'v seen is borderline.

My point was a properly designed HID fixture placed at the proper distances from combustibles is no more likely to start a fire than a home brewed cob setup.
And for total heat generated, that conversation has been had many times here on the forums that say 600W of led is going to contribute the same heat to the grow space as 600W of hps

they already exist ... came out of the aquarium diy crowd.

rapidled, stevesled etc.

no it won't that's WRONG. there is NO debate. 600 W of led has a higher photon to heat ratio than HID period.

600w of power is equal to 600w of heat you just get more photons from higher efficiency so it's the same amount of energy in the same place
yes same amount of energy, 600 watts is 600 watts, also since leds produce more photons, more energy is converted via photosynthesis into fixing carbon which doesn't turn into heat until the plant material breaks down.so less heat released into the grow space.
