they should ban cars before this through the city lol..

Hampstead mayor Bill Steinberg said the new bylaw was prompted by federal legilslation legalizing marijuana. (Bill Steinberg)

Smokers in Hampstead are losing their free range status tonight and will see their habit confined to backyards after the town adopts a strict new smoking bylaw.

Bylaw 1019 would be the most restrictive anti-tobacco legislation in Canada and would cover cigarettes as well as marijuana.

It prohibits tobacco use on all municipal property including: parks, streets, sidewalks, municipal vehicles, municipal buildings and the land adjacent to those buildings.

Fines ranges from $100 to $300 for first time offenders and from $200 to $600 for repeat offenders.

Residents will still be able to smoke in their backyards and electronic cigarettes are exempt from the bylaw.

Mayor Bill Steinberg said federal plans to legalize marijuana pushed the town to take action.

He said earlier in March that he expects the bylaw will pass unanimously.

Monday night's meeting is a special session to discuss a new development project and the council will vote on the bylaw at the same time.

I am completely ok with tobacco being treated this way, it is a substance that kills over half of its user base. The unfortunate thing is that they will likely use this bullshit to ban medical cannabis patients from smoking in public.

well ya see.......that's where they have no say in the matter.. :)
To little to late.. Med people have the right to medicate when and where they have to and no one can say otherwise...they can try as they may but have no legs to stand on with their BS ideals..
COURT will see it for the way it is..not for what they believe it should be.. ;)
you can VAPE of all things.. lol

Like Vaping is a thing HA HA.
Canna either burns or it does not..plain and simple...

Therein lies the rub, you will have to be willing to spend the time and money to challenge in court, although you or I may be willing a lot of people will not be and will either pay fines or simply be forced to hide in the shadows like criminals, which is bullshit.

i'm completely anti tobacco .,...but this is bordering on personal freedoms infringement ....
in your "back yard"...is a pretty narrow world, especially to those who don't have a back yard.
hmm where will the homeless smoke...????? so they should face a world of daily fines
of 300 to 600 bucks....range....hmmm how long before they end up in prison for smoking?
