Grrr - hydroton falling through net pot

So how do I stop the smaller pieces of hydroton from falling through the net pot? Those little pieces fell into the bucket, came out through the drain tube, and almost went down my drain - NOT COOL. Can I line the net pot with a single layer of cheesecloth or nylon mesh (Like the kind from a shower body sponge) or something?? That would let roots through but not small/loose hydroton. Plant not in yet which is why I’m asking now.

How big are the holes in your pots? I’ve never had an issue with that but granted my hydroton I get are all bigger than most I’ve used.you can always cover your drain with one of those plastic things that prevent hair going down your drain basically straining your water. Where do you drain your water to anyways?

I’m using the DWC kit that has a 6” netpot incorporated right into the lid - and if all the hydroton were the nice large marble-sized stuff it wouldn’t be an issue. Water goes out to a private septic ... and it gets backed up super easy - as in if a single baby wipe gets flushed we’re having to shell out $500 to get the septic opening dug up and unclogged. Yup, have a drain covering, but it still lets those small hydroton pebbles through.

Sound like you need your septic tank pumped. Needs done every 5-6 years to maintain your drain field. I’d find a finer cover for your drain. I’ve piped my drain into the crock in my basement which sends it out to my septic tank too. Also baby wipes are a no no in septic tanks as they can’t be broken down.

Also that’s high I called a place around me it’s only 132 bucks for them to come and pump my septic tank and it’s 1800 gallons.

The last time we had our septic pumped - 10’months ago, it was only 1/8 full because we had it pumped just 8 months prior to that And where we live, $500’is the starting price for all septic companies just to come OUT ... sad, but true.

Wow that’s high. it’s 300 if there’s snow and the grounds still frozen here in mi. It’s more because of reasons in the winter. If nothing else are you able to drain somewhere like a garden area?

Maybe i can stick the hose in a stocking or something ... I think that might work, at least for now.

When you're washing it do your final couple rinses it the net pot you're growing in. A couple blasts with a hose sprayer and all the smaller will fall through. Top off and repeat until your pot is pretty stable. Once they are rooted you won't have any more fall through. And just don't shake the lid around too much.

Mesh screen in the netpot, or find a screen with holes just big enough to shake all the small problem bits through and keep the big stuff.

You might have to go through your Hydroton and separate the big from the small. I worry about them going into my pump.

if you have to do that, i'd recommend drilling holes just slightly larger than the pieces you want to get rid of in a bucket, filling it about 1/3, and rolling it around till the little shit drops out....of course, i like to tinker with shit, guess you could just pick it out

Line your pots with cheesecloth or something similar, but it will be easier in the long run to either get different pots or different clay
