Growmau5's BML Spydr clone: a diy led build

Greetings RIU,
I am new to these forums and wanted to start out by showing my latest project inspired by my BML Spydr 600, SupraSPL's threads as well as Greengene's latest fixtures.

Project Goals:
  • create an attractive fixture that will look at home next to a BML spyder
  • achieve high lumen per watt efficiency with a balanced spectrum
  • achieve a 1.25-1.5 g/w yield out of a 4x4 space

LEDs: (16) cree xml2 3000K running on (2) MW LPC60-1750
(12) 3w Luxeon deep red
(6) Cree CXA3070 4000k running on a HLG120c700b
I began the project with a 36" 6061 Aluminum bar ($30) from: onlinemetals.com

Here is a picture of the bar with an access panel cut to install the drivers

Here is the top view with a 24" front panel for a computer server ($14) local shop

Bottom side for (4) 50mm fans from ebay ($5 ea)

I painted the control bar with an anodized look alike paint from auto zone to match the look of the spydr.

one of the 4 strips with 4 xml2's and 3 deep reds

This is about as far as I have gone with the project, so if there is interest in the thread, I will continue to post pictures and keep everyone updated.

Thanks

@Positivity & @AquariusPanta thanks for the kind words and thanks to everyone else for the likes.

Here is last night's progress: AC & DC power receptacles mounted and wired

XMLs and Luxeons wired and running

Passive temperatures are as follows: Ambient temp of the room 70F, avg temp of heatsink 80F after 1 hr run time. (84F (29C)at the ends of each heatsink)
Active temp after 1 hour run time: 74F (23C)
Next step will be to mount and wire the (6) cxa3070 to separate bars in between each of the existing bars. But there will be a fair amount of machining and sanding between now and then.

Well, its been a long weekend! But I have a finished product hanging and putting out photons. Here are a few photos as I was finishing up.

Sanding to 1000 grit wetdry on the 4.850" x 24" heatsinks (heatsinkusa.com) and mounting the cxa3070s

Final testing, for heat and dissipation (285w @ the wall)
cxa's are currently staying cool passively running all 6 on (1) HLG120c-700b

The remaining questions that I have are as follows, perhaps you guys can chime in.

1) 10k potentiometer dimmer pot not working. with the blue wire on the center pin & white wire on the left pin (looking top down from the knob) I am only getting 10-20% functionality. I had to remove the dimming function all together for now

2) The goal is to passively cool the CXA's since they are only running at 700mA. so far, heat sink temperatures are 84-88F dependent on location measured. A laser thermometer pointed directly at the center of the COB reads 125F, Is this normal?

Lastly, in response to @Yodaweed I will publish a full budget for the project in the next day or so.

Thanks for the support!

Your trying to dim one driver? If so go to the datasheet and scroll down to the dimming function. It should tell you what kind of resistance is needed.

A wise man once said " a light doesn't become a grow light until you actually grow something with it" - @Greengenes707

After getting a staggering result from my first grow with this light, I decided to make a video about it. The first part of the video is about building the light, (already covered above).
So if anyone is interested in the performance, purely from a yield perspective, fastforward to the 7 min mark. Thanks for checking it out.
