Growing in a 4x4 tent

okay so I’ve been watching the grow boss on YouTube and he is saying that 1000 watt is too much for a 4x4 tent. Right now I have my hood vented. My tent is in my basement with my temps at 78-81’F. So from the people also saying that a 1000watt light is to much for a 4x4 tent.. Y?

A 1000 watt in a 4x4 tent isn't too much light. Some say its the perfect square footage footprint actually. Especially a properly air cooled 1000 watt hid (in a tent). Keep it up all the way. Let the plants grow into it. The Grow Boss is nuts on a lot of points. He's ok for noobs but don't take every word he says as gospel. My cousin rocks 4x600 air cooled watters in a 7x7x7 (actually it's 6x6x6) tent and just CRUSHES it in quality and yield. Your good. I say go for it.

Okay cool.. I have the hood all the way up and if I had to cause it’s a cheap tent I’ll cut two slits in the top of it and raise the light even higher. No Co2 yet, but It’s next on the list lol. Well I just want to make sure their going to be okay. With my last grow I just put the light on my ceiling in my 12x12x7 bedroom and had the same light 3ft away and the plant grew very nice.

I didn't believe there was such a thing as too much light until my last grow. Always had problems with Green Crack in my 5x5 with a 1000w HPS (air cooled). I blamed it on all kinds of things. Ph, peat moss being old, pots being too cold, humidity, wind, too much N, bla bla bla. Five grows, five times they looked stressed all through flowering. Even with the intake air at 70 and leaf temps (measured with a laser thermometer) at 75. The hood was at 36 inches from the tops.

Then by accident, my ballast broke and I had to flower them with an old 600W HPS. I got virtually the same yield (maybe 5% less?), not a single problem, turned out more potent.

For a 1000W to be optimal on a 4x4, that 4x4 needs to be in an open space with a large oscilating fan, not those tiny useless clip-ons, CO2 has to be at over 1000ppm, and temps have to be kept in the 80-85 range. Otherwise, you will get heat and light stress. The vast majority of plants will do just fine. My Bubba Kush had no problems where my GC did. But you're wasting money.

Thank-you.
I run a 600watt in a 4X4.
I have always pondered on an upgrade to a 1K bulb, or two 600's in a 4X8.
Hearing your story, I think definitely made up my mind.
Cheers mate.

I'm a fan of the grow boss. He tells it like it is without over complicating things. Lots don't like his personality..

If your vegging with a 600 in a 4 x 4 and have a full canopy. (no light hitting the floor) then flowering with a 1000w makes perfect sense. As a plant gets larger it benefits from more light.

As Michigan Grower said its about suppling the plants requirements, at all stages of its cycle.

Only restrictions for me, is heat in the summer, and vertical height.
I don't care much for overall yield myself. I'm too lazy to scrog or monster crop / lst. I'm a real hippy at heart.
I just love letting them go for it. I love the way they grow naturally. Just like a lady loves looking at, and smelling her flower bed.
It's a real hobby for me. It just so happens I get some smoke out of it too.
Myself. I miss out on about 4 ounces total. Which isn't really much, if not growing for profit.
What @Achalemoipas explained, makes perfect sense for my needs, and I thank him.

I hear ya. If your not maximising what you have there is no point spending extra money either.

Way I'm thinking too. Is if I get 12 ounces from my 600 in a 4X4. Then if I get 24 ounces in a 8X4, using 1200watts. Then it's probably better on average, than a 1kw, in a 4X4. I still wouldn't have to worry about A/C either. It's a win/win for my circumstances.
Would be easier to manage as well. Less work too.
I'm almost sold TBH.

600s are the way if you are sticking with HPS, I am convinced. I totally agree with you. 1000 in a 4x4 works with a cooling hood and all that but I don’t think it is worth it.

I keep going back and forth on this myself. I am also considering dropping air cooled, and going with a DE 1000w setup, and then get an AC and just cool the whole tent. If needed even, my basement runs cold and the 600w cool tube warms it up nicely.

If you don't use ço2. 600w led is usually recommended in a 4x4
My solution was to just get a 1000w dimmable ballast (the Apollo Purple Reign) and see what works best in my 4x4. I recently swapped my cooltube for a sun system air cooled blazer hood, and it actually brought my temps up a bit. That also could be because I redid my venting, and reattached a carbon filter. I got some playing around to do this weekend.

I am also planning on adding some co2, as my temps are right around 83-85. Definetly will if I go any higher than 600. Considering getting a decent eyehortilux 1000w bulb and dimming it down to 800 or something.

Sun system uses glass were I think your cool tube may of been Perspex if its like mine. I think Glass holds and radiates heat more than Perspex does. Sun system Hood will put more light over the area though. I went from cool tube to sun system hood and the lighting over the area was visibly better.

I think you're dead on. I looked at my tube and it is for sure not the same glass, most likely Perspex. I agree, I have noticed that I am getting more light and better light from the sun system hood. I bought it used for 65 from my LHS and it came with a barely used 600w eyehortilux HPS bulb in it. I should really switch my MH bulb back in for veg, but I feel like the eye HPS is still better than the apollo MH.

decided to grab a 1000w ballast and dim it to what I need. The apollo Purple reign seems like a good bet.

Because of heat about half the year I run my 5 by 5 at 600 ( and this year I'm going from 12 hours to 10 hours of light to save on air conditioner usage too ) and the 4 by 4 at 400, in the winter 1000 and 600w respectively, well sometimes I leave 4×4 at 400w, depends if I'm trying to slow things down or speed them up
-good luck

Honestly if not doing a long veg, I've found hps to be absolutely fine. Young plants prefer hps anyway. It emulates the beginning of a season quite well.
It's the same outdoors really. The spectrum doesn't really become that blue, until well into spring. At least that's how the sun is where I am. Australian sun is pretty damn strong too.
I'd only hit plants with mh, about 4-5 weeks from seed. That would give you a month or so of mh, in an 8 week veg.

Damn, great advice, thanks! I knew that if you had to run a whole grow with a single bulb, go HPS. I am on the end of week three right now (today is day 21 actually). I think I will give it the MH in a few days. I'm growing Bodhi regs right now, so Im going to try and sex the pre flowers, then find a good male of each, kill off the other males, and isolate to harvest pollen. Then flower all of the females. Hoping for a 50/50 mix, which would leave me with 8 fems in a 4x4, so probably cull the weakest two, then do the last 6 in my 3 watering trays. gonna shoot for a 6 week veg with 4-8 tops.
