hmmmm...Not seeing them on the ASTIR website...? :-P
Astir already has it's own led series to work with .....
And make a living out of it ....

This is something special ....
Not for sale ,at the moment being .
Not ready ...
Still plenty of refining ...
And if it was to be for sale ,I guarantee you this :
It's price won't be for the masses ....

(For three boxes and one psu ,along with three interconnect cables ...
.People pay $.$$$ for all sorts of BS ...
These ?
When in the "state " I want them to be ?
No.....Only few will get them....Plenty of $ for 300 Watts ...
Inside a golden plated suitcase ,probably ....)

My huge ego ,is quite pricey .....

...
But ....
....
In the days to come ,we will see if this " but " is worthy or not ....

Hurray SDS!!

Was that red bust in the same way as the one that fried before? with the burn on the lens?

Also, i only just noticed how much i like your color mixing....really nice placement.

Well done! Grow log time!
No ...No black fried chip .....
I'm suspecting ,that :
A ) Led burned out from high temps while I've pushed it tp 700mA without cooling properly ...
Althought it was for about 20-30 secs only ....

B ) If ,when I'll inspect the chip ,find a small-tiny-tiny rupture / crater /hole .....
If visible with naked-eye ...That's static electrism .....
Hmmmmm.......Yeap ,I wasn't wearing all times the bracelet,when handled leds /pcbs .... .....
...

Just wired #1 .......
Guess what .....

When I turned it on ......
One red led fried in front of my eyes with a nice spark there !!!!!
Black chip .......

Why ?

Because ,stupid me , I haven't checked carefully if the wires soldered to pcbs are making any contacts they shouldn't ....
Shit .....

Oh ...

....WTF ?
.

So stupid I am ?

Thank God ,is just one red ...
(AGAiN!!!!!!! They are avenging me !!!!! The red leds !!!!! ...I'm SoRRYYYYYY!!!!!!!)

BTW ....

REds are missing the small diode that whites have ....
Wonder why ....

(I got some spares ,to have .....He-he ... )

Anyway....

A third ,last one left,to complete the 22-300 Watt (at plug ) 3x multiple panel led system ....
"Full Flowering/ Fruiting " tuned ,spectrum -wise ....
Using high quality parts and materials ....
Still evolving ....

But the "path " is right ....
..
I.e .

Cooling :

~30 ' min of operation ,Fans at 41 Volts-really silent operation - leds at 700 mA ....(max )
Ambient was 21 °C....
Temperature taken at where pcb surface & led (led side ) meet ....At thermal copper pour solder joint ..
....36°C ....(for whites ...Reds run 1-2 °C cooler ..... =>33-35 )...

I guess (hard guess ) the dies are working at about mid-forties .....
Which is rather_more than_ great ....

Details ....
Oh ..those details ....
I always liked those allen domed bolts ....
They look kinda ...retro ....
All bolts'n ' nuts (& washers ..) are made of Stainless steel .
(Tool A2 grade or 316 extra corrosion-resistant ..Intended for Maritime use )
P3146366.JPG
.....
Where Arctic Silver Epoxy (with Silver nano-particles ,~7 W/m.K ) bonds heatsink and mcpcb ...
P3146367.JPG....

Leds soldering ....
P3146368.JPG..........
Pcbs laqcuer ...(after the reworking ,not only it withstanded the whole procedure without a trace of smoke or odour ,but it almost doubled it's loustrus / glossy appearance ...
And became really hard to come off...Like a plastic thin film ...
P3146370.JPG.....

....

I've to get the proper tools, for the job ...

All electric tools I used was a dremel-style multitool and a drill ....
Oh ....And the kitchen ,too .....

All the rest , hand-made ....

Box #2-the newest one- is working perfectly .......Grow shall begin with that one ....

Box #1 :

-Some leds(whites mainly ) in one pcb that has been reworked at least 3 or 4 times ,
show a visible difference both in brightness (dimmer )compared to others and color
(whites seem warmer ... ) ...Reds seem unaffected ..thing is that those leds are kinda brownish everywhere from flux used in solder paste ...
Haven't cleaned them with IPA ...I''ll try to clean them ,before confirm that I've "overdone" them a bit ....
(I must have "burned" that pcb over 4-5 times ...)

- All 36 leds now light up .....
But .....

D.I.Y means also .....Destroying It Yourshelf ....
Guess what ....

Can anybody guess what is that tiny pcb ?
P3156374.JPG
Yes,it is fried for good ......
( A small tiny chip that has " 358 1B " written on it seems kinda different from others ......
Shinny ,browny ....burned ....Overdone ....)

I've short-circuited accidently the driver ....But not only with his "load " .....
Anyway ...Probably I'm the only one who can do/manage such stupid things ...

Get a new one ,stupid .....
Empty your pockets ....

"SHORT-CIRCUIT PROTECTED "
"SHELF-RECOVERING " ...

Ok ....I've short circuited them along with the outputs of at least one more driver ....
So it was more it could handle ...
A small smd resistor is totally destroyed...(badly deformed ...).
And that small die "358" seems if not fried ,at least pushed to it's limits ....
P3156376.JPG
....
( Leds where saved ,by one red sacrifising shelf to save the others ....
That one was replaced by new red ....So ...
Now all leds light up ..Each pcb tested x2 times ,with the other two working drivers..
But now ,I'm one driver less ...
Shit ...
Destroying It Yourshelf ....

Ok ....

Today some youngsters have emerged from substrate ...
P3196388.JPGP3196389.JPG

Although my DIY system ,is supposed to be a multi-panel system ( 3x boxes x 36 leds each box ..),
due to the fact that one has a fried buck driver (#1 ) and the other is actually still ..parts of itself (#3 ) ..

This grow is going to be done with only one box ...
No matter the number of plants underneath ...
P3196390.JPG

Speaking of which ....
I had sowed 4x Ganja's "Blue Russian " and 5-6x Serious Seeds White Russian ...
In fact ,I mixed them randomly ,before sowing them ...

For now ,Current of leds is set at ~ 340mA ...
50-52 Watts at plug .(leds-fans-bucks-main PSU ,all included ..)
P3196386.JPGP3196387.JPG..

Time to bust some "biband/triband " purple colored ,walking dead ,myths ...
They 've been "zombieing" around for quite a while now ....
I hope after this test grow ,they will rest in peace ,for good ...
I got really tired of posting about all that ...
Time to prove it ,with some action there ..

(.......Once more ? Like the Astir panels wasn't a good proof ,eh ?
......
Ok....Let's see what happens from now and on ...
Branded -quality leds and parts, used ....Warm White & Deep red ,used ....
No purple colored crap ,here.... )

P3196391.JPG...

Some guys out there(both growers and grow led light designers ) ,
by the end of this grow ,
they'll need a large canopy parachute ....
Their " free fall " ,is going to be rather hard , to 'slow down' .....

And be sure that I'm planning on total " eradication " of such purple theories/ideas/beliefs ..
Powderising every little bone ,of them ..
With no mercy shown ...
...
Once and for all ....

It is ,Pet ..
Yes it is ,indeed ...
As for example a combo of NW ,WW and red leds ,is a 'triband '...

But the " issue " here, is not the actual number of "bands used " ..

'Issue' is which bands are used ....
And how much of each band ...

Ah...

Here ,at this thread ,will unfold the school of "Whites & Reds"...
To be precise "Warm Whites and Deep reds " ....

As for the "opposite " school of bi/tri/quad/etc band monochromatic leds ..
To be precise ,any "Blue & Red " .....

At this school ,it is teached that :

-From ~ 280nm up to ~ 740 nm of E/M radiation ,higher plants ,practically utilise every single photon
( aka quanta='packets of energy ' =vibrating_cosmic harp_ chords !!! =....Us,all.....)...
There is not a single wavelength into that range ,that plants do not utilise ...
Utilise those photons as energy (to make Carbonhydrates through PS ) or
utilise them as 'signals' ,to adjust better to their environment .Using light to evolve.

So ,here in our school,we trust that there isn't much truth in the "Green light is useless / bad " moto/idea/theory /thought / fetish / RELIGION (? ) ....

Amongst many other things ,of which ,you personally ,I'm guessing that you know all/most about it ,already...

Number of bands ,is not the issue ,brother ..
Keep that in mind,please ...

Possible issues using that kind of light :

-Oversaturating (a plethora of red photons ) PS systems(specially on seedling stage ) ..
Along with damaging antennae of them ,their light harvesting proteins and decreasing ChB pigment content ..
But hey !..We've a dimmer for that reason ......

-Internodal Streching during vegetative stage ...
Not much blue light ,to minimise that ...
Here human applied training or other practices ,maybe needed ...

-Need for elevated CO2 air content .
(Stomata not fully open )..
Urban air's ~400ppm ,is ok ...
Though ,a bit higher would not hurt ..

-Circadian cycle abnormalities during flowering.
If they 'll appear ,will deal with 'em ,using 2x 40Watt halogen spots ,for added FR ..

-Abnormalities in Male/Female ratio ...
...Oh ...No .....If that happens ,I'm screwed ..
New pcbs with couple of NW,onto them ...
No-No-No--
(.....Keep my fingers crossed ,only for that thing .....Honestly ..)

Any more ,that left out ?

Another European company was set to release a light using Oslon SSls ..
I think it was 2xNW & 4x Deep reds ,at each...modular... 'module ' ...
Do I remember correctly ?

I know for sure for their previous model ..
(had some issues with powering evenly the drivers ,I think ...)
V3.jpg..

Well ...Instead of 2x NW ,I've used 8x WW ....
Kept the four deep reds ...
For every NW ,that light used ,I use 4x High CRI 2700°K WW ...
...
I've made a "glasshouse/greenhouse filtered " kinda of light ....
Not much blue ...
~Same levels as if was growing with an ordinary HPS ...4-5%

Ya ,know ...

"Yield-wise " ....

Good to see EVO hanging in. This looks great, but just from the photo looks like chip sets are far apart

What is the interface... heat pad, arctic silver...?

stardustsailor

Probably those are driven close to their max ....
(6x leds =14 Watts ?..With or w/o the psu loss ? )
...
So ....

2 Oslon coolwhite
2 Oslon Red

2 Oslon deep Red

At each module ...
.....
Each box
of mine ,is like having 6x of these modules ...
Something like that option :
http://www.growlet.es/iluminacion-led/evoled-evo50-starlight-cultiva-60x60-p-766.html
"Area de cultivo: 60 x 60 cm.
Incluye: 2 EVO50 de 3 bombillas (84 W
)"
...
But with different led choice ...

2 Oslon Deep red
4 Oslon Warm White (of typ. CRI 95 )

^^^instead of Starlight's 2xRed & 2x CW combo...

^^ That's my kind of DIY

I too do not get their diode color choice

but damn, if they sell chipsets separately, they can dominate

Some led basics ...

Led efficiency basics ...
basics 1.jpg......

How to improve efficiency ....
thin film vs volume.jpg...

Same 'principle' producing white light from phosphor ...
As with actual die-internal operation ,samewise with efficiency increasement at phospor conversion ..
Osram's thin film tech ,changed radically the world of modern high-power leds ....
white film vs white volume.jpg..

Oh ..Please tell me, that they are saving the last option ,for making really ..'special ' leds ....>>>white light from leds.jpg..

Weird ,that they are not mentioning their Blue chip & Red+Green phoshor mix ...

PS / EDiT : Gosh ! ...
Is it possible that White Oslons SSL already utilise the last method ,to produce their light ?

If so ....
Then there has to be some measurable UV radiation ,underneath ....
