Hey everyone! I am just beginning a new grow in the next week and would like some suggestions on what lights to purchase. I am a total newbie at this so I have no idea where to start. Thank you!

What type of grow are you planning? If a single plant buy a spiral CFL plant bulb. You can buy them on Amazon for around $12. Go to Wal Mart and buy a cheap aluminum reflector. That will get you going. Keep the light just a weeeee bit off the plant top. If more than one plant buy a fluorescent fixture and plant grow bulbs and do likewise. For flowering you will need a High Pressure Sodium light. I suggest 400 watts but many go with 250 and get good results. Poor lighting makes for poor bud.

Do NOT go with any LED plant lights at this time. They are not advanced enough in the different parts of the reds and blues and whites to produce results like HPS.

Oh and before you go and spring big bucks for multi-tube fluorescent fixtures like the Quantum Bad Boy - call the local Habitat for Humanity or a used building materials supply. They have those things running out of their ears. Just make sure it works and then replace the tubes with plant spectrum units. CHEAP! Same with the High Pressure Sodium lights for flower. Search Craigslist for "High Bay Shop Lights". They are everywhere. Usually come with a used 400 watt HPS or Metal Halide (Metal Halide is perfect for vegging if you can afford the juice) bulb. Replace it. The ballast is attached to the reflector and the whole thing weighs like a Volkswagen. But separate the ballast from the reflector/bulb holder and wire it with 10/3 copper wire. Stick the ballast in another room if possible but out of the weather if you run it outside. They make a lot of unwanted heat. The 400 watt HPS bulb will have no idea it's working in a bargain unit.

Start with doing research and looking at other grows. You can get an idea of your wattage needs by measuring your space and the size you plan on growing your plants.

It's a good idea to spend plenty of time up front planning your grow room, asking questions and not rushing out to buy gear that might not be useful or just plain well marketed junk.

Do not take advice from a bombastic, barely literate clown who makes sweeping generalizations.
