Afghani #1 - Advice on First Attempt at Breeding

Here's a question that I'd appreciate input on. I have a total of 7 Seedsman Afghani #1 regs chugging along. (3 are in the crazy party cup comp). All in veg right now, no sex showing but I'm actually hoping for 1 or 2 males to gather some pollen and embark upon my first breeding experiment.

I've done a good bit of reading and have plenty of time to do more. I have a separate grow space for up to 3 males. I will be pollinating a branch or 2 of the strongest Afghani fem. (Below are pics of 2 of the Afghani's)

Next, I'm wondering if I should try pollinating a branch of any of these other ladies that are on the right timeline. Or maybe just do the Afghani.

I've grown Fruit Punch, Liberty Haze and Marionberry before, so I'm familiar with them. I'm leaning toward Liberty Haze. My pheno is Sativa leaning and a bit leggy.

  • Critical Sensi Star (Critical Mass x Sensi Star) 90% Indica
  • Fruit Punch (Skunk x Haze x NL) mostly Sativa
  • Marion Berry Kush (Rasberry Kush x Space Queen) Sativa 40% x Indica 60%
  • Cherry Bomb (Big Bomb x Undisclosed) mostly Indica
  • Liberty Haze (G13 x Chem Dawg 91) Indica/Sativa mix my pheno is more Sativa leaning

Hey nice project!

The afghani 1 is a pure landrace ibl and therefor truebreeding for some traits.

If you do a afghan x afghan that is linebreeding. Selection should take place. But whatever you do you will stay in the line and make more of them stable strong ibl seeds.
you only trigger a bit of traits by selection. For examample taste size flowering time or thc content. You could also call it finetuning optimizing or pimping your actual ibl by selection.

About crossing the afghani x some of your other strains......
the strains you listed above are multihybrids. If you cross them with afghan you will just make the indica side of the strains stronger. Wider stronger stem, darker wider foilage, a more hashplant like thc-profile aso.

For some real f1 hybrid vigor you would like to cross it with a pure sativa.
but you dont have one in the menu so I would go for the most sativa like plant for the most intresting cross. In your case this is a hybrid too so the outcome will not be a classic f1.
If you like to have a pleasant surprise cross the afghani into all strains you run. Grow out a few testers and maybe you will find some fire.
afghani is a super good strain for crosses and linebreeding alike.

But keep this in mind...... if you have the choice dont use the first and not use the last male that shows sex. Some people say the first male will bring you more towards rope not drug. The last male will add to finishing time. If you only have one male there is no choice. If you have two males go for the one that you like more. Its a bit intuition in this case.
edit
if you have no high tolerance (no daily smoker) testsmoke some leafes of each male and go for the one that gives you a good buzz.

Hope that helps a lil bit.

Happy chucking bro!

Peace

Thanks friend. Good advice Gbuddy. I'm hoping to have some fun with this. I'm def going to do a few Afghani x Afghani, and prob at least 1 Afghani x Liberty Haze, since my mother is a Sativa dom lanky girl. I've got a number of landrace sativas on my wish list, but it's going to be a few months before I can buy the seeds. Ketama, Malawi and Thai.

Sounds like big fun bro!
Where you are planning to order the landrace genetics from? World of seeds? I am just asking because I had their ketama xaeon and I had very bad germination rates.
I dont blame the breeder I believe the reseller sold me old seeds because many of the seeds from this purchase had no good germination rates.
If you have the possibility to order directly from the breeder I would go for that route.

Have fun bro

Peace

I've been browsing World of Seeds.. If I order from The Choice they have 3 diff World of Seeds freebies: South African Kwazulu, Wild Thai, and Pakistan Valley. The first 2 may make interesting Sativa stock down the road. You familiar with Kwazulu or Wild Thai?

I never grew one of the sativas ^^ you listed but the pakistani is a great kush plant and hashplant. You will find many purple phenos with intense berry flavours.
its a good candidate to cross with your afghani to create a verry strong pure kushline. I expect great fun and stability from a paki x affi cross!!

The kwazulu is a pure sativa with a short flowering time and its said to be highly mold and pestresistant strain. Thats good for outdoor use.
also good candidate for a cross with pure indica plants. F1 vigor can be expected while flowering time stays short.

The wild thai flowers 11-12 weeks what is more common for a pure sativa. I would consider this strain for the best candidate for a f1 hybrid to cross with the afghan or pakistan kush plants.
you may end up with a floweringtime 9-10+ weeks
Imo for the most phenos.
but production could be very high Id believe. If you use only the best for the cross the offspring is maybe worth the extratime.

Iam more of a indica kind of guy thats why I would do the paki x affie before anything else. But thats just me. Big darkgreen leafes purple stems and buds dripping from resin with a tasterange from chocolate to berry sounds great to me. The paki is more uplifting while the affie is narcotic.... that gives a mix that will calm you down and chillout but wont KO you totally into couchmodus.

For the paki if you like it i would go for the version cannabiogen offers!

For a crossbreed I would think about something like that.....

(Affi x paki) x thai x (affi x paki)
