This is a 300 watt CFL thats very heavy. Keeping that in mind and the fact that it will probably get very hot, i tied it around its own treads with a steel wire. Good idea, bad idea? will this break the bulb, will it spark or something crazy im not thinking of? thanks for any imput

300W cfl? Wow that's a lot of watts for a cfl hehe. I've seen some big ones at the local hydroponics store and they were like five times that size. I got a 55W one and it's just about the same size as yours.

Couldn't you find a desk lamp type arm that could suspend the light? Are they using regular sized sockets?

If u look at my setup, I've got arms hanging the lights above the plants and I can adjust as they grow..

Whether it's a 300 watter, or a 300 "Equivelant" - one thing is for sure! Without some kind of a reflector, you're wasting almost all of the actual light! The light radiates out in a full 360 degree "sphere" - YOU ARE LIGHTING UP THE WHOLE ROOM! You should "focus" all the light directly onto the plant. Otherwise it's like using a big ass lawn sprinkler, in a parking lot, to water only one pot. It's just plain wasteful!

As long as the metal doesn't get to hot you should be fine. Just don't touch it or you might burn your fingers. I think metal is a better call that string because it won't burn or smoke.

what are you trying to say? i cant understand what the hell your talking about. are u telling him its too big for his grow and throw it away? cuz thats nonsense
I think he was saying the U shaped part of the bulb is not long enough for it to be an actual 300w light, and I agree, it'll be a 300w 'equivalent' which means shit to us for growing.
Not sure what the bit about throwing it away was about though...

i know its a 300 watt equiv, that wasnt the question. all i asked was if the steel wire would get too hot for the bulb and melt or shatter it. thats all i was asking this thread went a completely different direction
