At 700mA (51W), a 12-20" spread between COBs is doable, depending on the canopy size you need to cover. If you are planning on using active cooling, for (4) CXA3590s (204W)
-3.5" profile - 46" length
-4.23" profile, 36" length
-4.6" serrated, 17.5" length
-4.9" profile, 25.5" length
-5.375" profile, 17.5" length
-5.88" profile, 23" length
-7.28" profile, 17.5" length
-8.46" profile, 15" length


But if you are thinking passive cooling, with a little help from your circulation fan, basically triple the lengths above. I am still experimenting with reducing the passive cooling numbers though, you might be able to get away with a lot less if your circulation fan is hitting them.

What size fan or fans should I get?

It is most efficient if your fan pushes air into every channel, so for the 5.888" profile for example a 140mm fan is perfect. It is OK if the fan hangs over a bit. This 200mm fan would work for the 7.3" or 8.5" profiles

So if I run six 3590's, I would need 24" of the 7.28" wide heat sink plus the fan you mentioned?

With 6 CXA3590s at 700mA and 24" length, you will be getting about 27cm²/W. I think that will work well with that fan. If your heatsink temp gets high (40C), you could crank up the fan speed a bit. The 200mm fan should be reasonably quiet.

How about 2 on each heat sink running even slower than 1? And can I use 2 drivers for the six 3590's or 3 drivers?

I suspect that each driver can run 4, but it could be a close call they might only run 3 at 700mA so if you wanted to run 4 you might have to dim it slightly. But since you are going with 6 COBs/ heatsink instead of 4, you could use a pair of drivers for each heatsink and get the full 700mA for sure.

With a 36" length, I suspect a single fan will actually be more efficient than a pair because you dont really need a whole lot of air movement to get the job done and the fans would fight each other to some extent where the airflow meets in the middle.

Just received my HLG-185H-C700's a few seconds ago a gonna pick up the fans that SUPRA suggested but mine will be black instead of clear for $2 cheaper same mfg same specs just price lol. Monday I think will be receiving my heat sinks.

They are big enough to blow air into every channel of the 7.3" but would be too small to get all the fins of the 10 inchers. Ya black is better the white ones would probably look grungy within minutes lol.

Nice stack of Mean Wells, that is going to be a badass build!

it's likely that only if the heat sink is somewhat warm (50C), the HLG-185H-C700A will be able to provide the voltage needed to get 700mA through 4 cxa3590. At 30C case temperature, the voltage drop across 4 3590 will likely only push around 600mA through according to the characteristic curve in the datasheet.

I had a similar problem trying to drive 4 vero 29 in series with a similar current driver, and being short a few volts to get 1.4A through. (it would only put 1.1A through)

It would also be possible to use 3 cxa3590 in series with anything else at 700mA to drop the voltage slack. (you could put something like a cxa 3070 as the 4th and run that at 700mA with the rest.).

Basically anything that will drop the right amount of voltage to drop a little bit more voltage that works at 700mA would work fine, assuming you want to get your power supply's worth.
