Giving cannabis to dog for glaucoma?

So my grandmas dog is around 14 years old and has pretty sever glaucoma. I had been considering giving the dog cannabis infused treat to help with that and other discomforts i know shes having in her old age. (if only my grandma herself would take a puff too) but im curious if anyone has ever treated their dogs this way and what should i be looking to give dose wise for a 40-50 lb poodle. And maybe any recipes anyone has? All insight is accepted! Thanks everyone!

I gave my dying dog multiple doses daily before he died. Made him much more comfortable

I had a cat who was in renal failure and not eating. He hadn't eaten on his own for several days, which in cats can put them into liver failure. I ground up 1 gram of Blue City Diesel and 1 gram Harlequin then heated in almost an ounce of butter for about 40 min. Gave it to myself first to make sure it wasn't too strong since animals are more sensitive to cannabis than us. Didn't feel much so I started with 0.2 cc in the mouth. He started to eat about 2 hrs later. We continued to give him about twice a day, for the most part he continued to eat. He unfortunately died recently but he at least had the benefit of cannabis to allow him to eat and feel more relaxed. Cannabis is potentially a great medicine for animals too, we just have to be careful. As for glaucoma, I wouldn't see why it wouldn't decrease intraocular pressure like it does in humans. The premade edibles at a dispensary may be too potent but don't know for sure. Better to start real low (where you wouldn't feel anything yourself) then work your way up. Dogs can get ataxic to the point of not being able to walk on what we think as small doses (depends on size of the dog too). Sorry didn't really answer your question, but just trying to give insight. I think you would want a high CBD and almost no THC blend of oil. From what i have read and experienced our pets do not process THC the same way. Sadly, I thought it would be funny to blow smoke in my dogs face when I was a kid. He really liked the smell and taste and would chase the bowl around the room, but he got a little wigged out when he ran into the kitchen with a checkered tile floor

There are cannabis treats for pets that you can buy. I believe they are made from hemp oil. canna-pet is the brand. Are they effective? I don't know. Probably mostly hype.

If you get ambitious and make your own recipe for sale I own a few really good domains that are for sale regarding this topic.

If you are going to medicate the dog maybe make some olive oil or coconut oil at a really light dosage. For human consumption I use 1 tsp of ground bud for every tsp of oil... Maybe cut that recipe by 10x to try it out and increase strength over time.. Just a thought. I hope this helps and wish the best for your pet.

Yeah like sunny747 said the thc goes through a second pass effect in the liver so lasts a lot longer and are more sensitive to it. CBD strains would be safer starting points. Both THC and CBD have shown decrease in intraocular pressure but according to literature has about a 3 hour duration...in humans. One could extrapolate due to second pass effect in dogs that it may last longer. But hard to say definitely since dogs and cats for that matter metabolize things very differently than humans.

Cannabis is a preventative for glaucome, but won't reverse any damage already done.

we give her eyedrops prescribed by a vet. But thats really all that can be done. But thanks for the useless response lol.

We have a CBD strain around here called star tonic, 70/30 cbd thc. Maybe if i get my hands on that and allow it mature even more maybe 2 weeks past its regular time itd be even more CBD?

Did you even ask the vet about the cannabis? If you wanted a usefull response, you would have asked the vet. You're asking the wrong questions, "how to administer", when you should ask "will it help?"

That's cool that vets in WA are utilizing it. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find a vet that's willing to talk about cannabis use. Vets aren't legally allowed to recommend or say their dog can use cannabis like human physicians are allowed to recommend in legal states. So vets aren't technically protected like physicians. However, Nevada just passed a law to allow this, which is pretty awesome. But kudos to the vets that do risk things to give debilitated animals an alternative means of medicine.

Exactly, and most vets and doctors alike, would rather prescribe the medicines they get paid by pharm companies to sell. And its almost 100% likely that any of them will have knowledge on how much cannabis to give, if theyd even talk about it.
