Girthy roots?

This is my second grow, and I'm a newbie by all accounts, as I'm fresh to the forum I've been just browsing threads and learning more, one thing I just noticed is on my prior grow (Bruce banner photo) it had thin stringy roots like a lot of the pics I see on here, however on the GDP auto I'm growing now I've got some thick bois that thin out. Plant is very healthy after surviving a minor bout with pythium early on.
Are these girthy roots normal? Plant is healthy and happy otherwise.

I think I got some funky seeds from blimburn, another GDP auto I have growing is in soil and the entire plant looks like it grew in a tornado, (thread here if you want to see https://www.rollitup.org/t/genetic-disorder-bad-seed.1073849/#post-16917695)

And a third seed from the same batch that I gave to a friend is only about 10inches tall thin as he'll and flowering, but otherwise completely healthy, all the plants are the same age

I haven't fucked with aquaponics other than cloner but looking at your pic looks like your res levels can run low, you wanna keep liquid at least misting all root zone. Do you use any bennies?

I run 3 gal in the res, and this picture was from right before a weekly change, she was in stretch and drinking a lot so it was a little lower than normal at the time.

And yes, I just use bacillus
