GH Water Farm Help

Hi Everyone,

I was inspired by ScottyBalls grow journal:

I am want to make sure what I am doing is ok so I dont kill my seedling.

Yes I germinate till tap root is about 1/2" long using a wet paper towel in a sandwich bag... then I dig some hydro ton out the center of the water farm so water dripping from the ring flows to the center.. I place the tap root inbetween a few peices of hyroton in the center.. just make sure it stays wet where you put it.. after a day or two you will not have to worry cause the tap root will already be a few inches long.. as the growth tip comes up even with the rest of the hydroton I then pile the hydroton back around the stalk..

I dug out some of the hydroton but it doesn't seem to be flowing to the centre like Scotty mentions. I put the germinating seed in the centre of the slightly dug out hole. I decided to keep the space pitch black until it grows further.



Should I dig deeper? Should I leave it? Should I add a light source or keep it black? Should I spray it with water until the root finds water?

it should be fine planting it like that, but go ahead and give light. you could give it a spray or two a day it wont hurt anything. don`t drown it, it just needs to be damp till you see green. there water in the pebbles on down in there and the roots will find it. i don`t like starting seed in there, i have to much splash from the ring and it hurts the leaves. that has a lot to do with the air pump you use.

I have five of those waterfarms, I haven't tried them out yet but I saw a lot of people modding them to have airstones and bigger holes. I have modded 2 of them so far. I am waiting to use them on my next grow.

i use them off and on. modding them is not really necessary, most of the mods make them more user friendly. i have 8 and the standard res and none of them have are stock some i`ve done more to than others but i will eventually change them all to be the same and the ones that are modded still need a little more for me to call them done. the 4 and res that i using now all have been modded the most they have bigger holes added in the bottom, hole for air line to a stone in the res., and bigger holes in the ring, shorter lift tube, the res has been modded for recirculation.

Thanks seedho for the help. The tap root has started going down between the hydroton and is starting to do its thing. I did however leave it in a warm place with the lights off. Then this morning turned on a CFL overtop of it to give it some light. I'm sure either way I did it it would have come out fine. Thanks again
