GG Bastard Series - Colombian Gold

What's up RIU? I've wrapped up my first couple auto grows (check out my first auto harvests) and am moving on to photos. The first ones in line are these Gage Green Seeds Bastard Series Colombian Gold (name is long af).

There's going to be a couple 'firsts' for me on this grow. The first 'first' is cloning. After I get a couple of these plants established I'm going to sex them, pick out 1-2 of the most vigorous females, kill the losers and establish a couple mothers to take cuttings from. I'm keeping half of the 12 pack so I can attempt to breed them in the future (open pollination, same way this pack was made) - but for now I've got plenty of seeds.

2nd 'first' is that I've never dealt with photos really. With the autos I didn't have to worry about light leaks or flipping to 12/12 or any of that stuff...3rd 'first' is that these are regular seeds. All of the autos I grew were fem...so sexing cuttings and weeding out the males = new to me as well. Hopefully no issues there.

Here are the first couple that have germinated. 2/4 didn't make it (all of my autos germed before this so I fucked something up this time around - thinking too much perlite and they dried out too quick)...

First Photos.jpg

I'm not 100% sure when I planted these but the idea of this thread is to document the clones more than the mothers...The smaller of the 2 was stretching too much and kinda fell over on it's side so I had to replant it deeper - it had a little shock but is starting to prop back up and take off. So far so good...

I was pretty satisfied with the harvests on the autos so I'm going to stick w/ the same soil and nutes this time around (organic soil, Dr. Earth nutes with a little silica blast in early veg and molasses towards the end of flowering) , adjusting the water pH to 6.5 for each watering. These prospective mothers will be on 24/7 photoperiod until they are large enough to take cuttings from to sex. I've got some research to do on cloning but I don't think it'll be a big deal. I was thinking 18/6 for veg on the clones after they root (24/7 to start), and ofc 12/12 or maybe even 10/14 for flower.

For the most part my growing methods have been on the simple side. I think a lot of this shit gets over complicated for almost negligible differences in results. I might not be pulling pounds out of these tents but sticking w/ the basics has been working out good enough for me atm...I got about a 1/2 pound from this 3'x3' tent on my first grow which way overshot my original goal of around 4 oz. If this grow goes half as smooth we should be golden.

Lighting: 600w MH for veg, 600w HPS for flower (in a 3'x3' tent lol). 400w LED for the clones.

I won't be updating too frequently until things get moving along. As always all questions, comments and even criticism is invited here so let me know what you think.

I will certainly check back when thing get rolling. I have the Colombian Black. Sadly i missed the fact they were hybrids...makes me really uninterested in growing. hahaha I am interested in what you find. Good luck.

They (GGG) had the pure landraces (colombian gold&black) for a little bit but guess they got sold out quickly. The bastard series is the landraces x stud males from GGG collection. Was tempted to try the gold (landrace). World of seeds still has a landrace Columbian Gold available. Yeah keen to see these grown out too.

The first 2 are still going strong - the one that got replanted made a full recovery. I topped both of them and watered again last night.

Threw down a fem Sweet Dark Devil for backup in case the gg's come out male. Got one more GG germinated as well. I started these two lower down with plentyof room left in the cups to bury the stems a bit for stability. Gonna crank the fans up when these two stick their heads up above the rim of the cups.

That's it for now...nothing too exciting. The cloning tent will get set up n the next couple weeks and then I'll have to work out a new area for drying (was using that tent to dry).

My bad...a fem'd Sweet Black Angel* is what I started lol. I've got Dark Devil Auto seeds from Sweet Seeds, and Sweet Black Angel seeds from Samsara Seeds xD Got it mixed up.

Here's the bigger GG that got topped - really hoping this ones a female:

And then here is the Sweet Black Angel - at first I thought it was starting slow but looking back at the pics from 2 days ago it's not doing too bad:

Yes I have seen that before. Trichomes are on the plant for protection. It just so happens that the substance inside brings us pleasure. The ones you are seeing now are probably no the type that contain THC but are there only for protection. Under magnification do they have a head on them? The ones that contain THC have a head and are called stalked glandular trichomes and the other ones are called cystolith trichomes and have a pointed tip.

I'll check it out w/ a lupe when I get home. So the cystolith trichomes probably aren't any indication of potency then I'm guessing? When I first saw those I was thinking this plant's gonna be a frosty sob haha

Thx for the knowledge I'ma have to go read about those 2 different types of trichs

What Polo said, great explanation. Regardless of the type, you can still brag you got trichs a couple of weeks into the grow ;)
Haha I'm still kinda weary about letting people know I'm growing even tho I went n got ADT hooked up and my girl has a couple guns in case I'm not home n someone thinks they're gonna come up n the house. Guess I'll just brag here for now ;)

So I checked em out and they definitely have a different shape / look than the stalked grandular trichs I've seen in the past. Do you think these cystolith trichs are a good indicator of it being a female or can males produce them as well? little ways out from taking cuttings for sexing these plants right now but soon enough...

I don't think it's any indicator of sex. I've had some really frosty males before.
Something I've done to determine sex before was to take a cutting and stick it in a solo cup, after it's rooted just take it out of the tent and put it in a dark place for 12 hours. Of course it's not an optimal growing situation but if it's just to check the sex it'll do just fine for that. This way you don't have to fire up more lights or maintain conditions in a separate area.

So tell me about that led your gal got you for your birthday. I'm thinking about getting one like that or the one that's one step up (400w) just to play with. Yesterday was my birthday and that's what I wanna get myself. I wanna be like you!

Is that fucking trichs growing on my fan leaves lol? Anyone else experience that in early veg or am I just being overly optimistic? I thought they developed mostly on sugar leaves and buds but that sure as hell looks like some trichs n that picture...whatdya think? @polo the don @GroErr @Sativied
Yes, trichs :D All my 3 crosses (from same male) do that. Check out the first pic on this page for example: https://www.rollitup.org/t/sativieds-picture-journal.831229/page-8 still in veg, just inches tall. They actually start creating them within 2 days after germinating.

There are several types of trichs, on cannabis the following three:
- the pointy shiny hair like trichs (left on pic below)
- stalked trichs with glandular head as we see them during flowering
- capitate-sessile, the ones on our leaves (center of second pic), which have no visible stalk, but still have the glandular head with secret, which does contain cannabinoids.

Close up of the same (it actually has a 1-cell stalk)

And not just cannabinoids, but terpenes too. You should be able to smell it sooner.

Congrats Ayron :) It's not extremely uncommon in sativas and landraces but I'd definitely keep a clone or get some pollen from it if it's male.

And good to see you starting another thread/grow, subbed!

As for the sex indicator question, no, you can't tell if it's a female or male based on the early frost, my males and females do it all alike. Would have been cool though :)

To your clone tips I like my home built aero 99-100% survival rate other than that if you haven't checked you room for light leaks one of my noob mistake from years ago (shit has it been this long) was turning my lights off to check for leaks but not WAITING long enough.
it looks dark if your there for just a min but sit in there and tough it out for 10 to 15 mins and your eyes will pick up faint glows like through your ducting or dampers doorways and what not
hope this is helpful

About a week out from taking the first cuttings to sex GG 3 and GG 2

This is GG 3:

GG 2:
IMAG1132.jpg

And then GG 1:
IMAG1133.jpg

I'm still getting very minimal stretch with this 600w n this little tent so it's kind of hard to take decent sized cuttings from these little compact bushes so soon...I'm gonna give them some more time and see how they're looking next week.

Those are way too small. You may have to wait more than a week. They might not do much branching while in those solo cups. I usually wait untill I pot up and they recover then they take off and branch out giving you something to clone.
