germinating in soil ?

I'm trying to germinate my last seed in soil and I was wondering should I have lights on it? I think I read somewhere that during germination I should keep my seeds in a cool,dark place. But if it starts growing it's gonna need light to grow towards right? So should I have it under light or wait untill I see a little sprout?

did you just put the seed in the soil and plant it or did it have a tap root??

I just put the seed in one of those little peat pellet things, (The ones that expand with water) and put the seed about 1 cm into the soil. No previous tap root.

if that was in the last 24 hours then go get the seed out of the peat pellet and put it in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag or anything and put it on top of your tv computer monitor dvd player whatev is warm and let it develop a tap root then put in the peat...
