Germ issues

I started germination for my first grow 5 days ago. I had about 12 ‘hand me down’ seeds from a friend so I wet some paper towels and folded the beans in it. I covered them with two paper plates like a dome and placed them in a freezer bag. I left them in a room that’s about 85-90degrees. I’m not going to lie...I’ve been checking them damn near twice a day since day 2 and if the paper towel is a little dry I’ll spray it with a little water. I think I might have fucked them up by doing that because most of them look exactly the same as they did when I started. On one or two I can see some white, which I assume (and really fucking hope) is the tap root coming out but it’s nothing like the pics I see of you guys’ seedlings. It’s basically like that little section of the shell changed color(...nothing’s sticking out.) a few others turned the paper towel a little green, and one is cracked but nothing’s happening.
So, could someone explain what I’m doing wrong, is the white on the few seeds is a good thing or bad, why is the paper towel turning green, do I fuck shit up by continuously opening the freezer bag and how long should I wait before I give up on these seeds? Lastly, Like I said, it’s my first shot at this, so am I being too hype and should just relax for a second? I have a couple seeds coming (that I actually paid for this time) and I just want to get this right before I try to germ them.
Sorry in advance for the hundred questions and this long ass post. Any answers and advice is helpful. Thanx!

Where your going wrong is not letting Mother Nature do it’s thing. Pop said seeds in dirt or rapid rooters place a humidity dome over it. Let nature do it’s thing. The paper towel method and over handling seeds aren’t how seeds are meant to germinate plus you run the risk of break taproots and such.

Ok
So is it too late for these seeds? Or can i take them out of the paper towel and drop them straight into a red solo cup with a 50/50 coco/perlite mix? If so, its one seed per cup, right? And put the cups under the t5? Also, i dont have a humidity dome...rubberbanding a sheet of saran wrap over the top should do the trick, right? Thanks

So what’s your setup like? How controlled is your room or tent? Do you have everything planned out? What are you going to feed them? Since your doing coco you have ph and ppm meters or pens? Not trying to bust your balls but it sounds like you got some seeds and are simply seeing if they’ll grow. Best chance for success is having everything planned out fairly well.

But to answer your question yes that should work til they pop.

No i get it, i mean it probably seems that way because i really dont know what the hell is going on.
To answer your questions, the set up...for right now, is a 2x4x5 grow tent w/ 400w hps that i planned to use just to vegitate (figured that’ll take a few weeks and by time i get the seeds i just spoke about id have a bigger tent to bloom in and id just move the ones that im trying to germ currently)
Its only big enough for 3 7gal pots but thats okay because i only expected to actually grow 3 of the 12 seeds im germing.
You already know im using a coco/perlite mix. I have ph up and ph down, and some other nutrients from coco connoisseur. One for grow and one for bloom. (dont have a meter yet but ill have it before its time to add nutrients.)And a 4ft t5 to sprout the seedlings.
Is there anything else you think i need immediately? I was kinda on a budget and couldn’t get everything at once so I thought id grab what i could then get whats needed as i move along. For instance i dont have a flowering tent and light or carbon filter yet but I wouldn’t use them at this point anyway.
I get what you mean though, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail so if there’s something im missing, let me know. At this point, i feel like i got a whole bunch of shit and i dont know how to use it.

Also, just to be clear, your answer was to put one seed in each cup, wrap the top in saranwrap and sit them under the t5?

Sounds like you have an idea of what you need to do. Ppm meter will be a big one not just the ph pen, you said your room is already 85-90 degrees btw that’s hot as shit lol hopefully that’s not like a bedroom or something if that room is where your gonna be growing you need to watch those temps. You’ll need that fan once they’re in the tent veg and bloom. It’s not just for scrubbing the air and venting it but to properly exchange gasses in the room.

Yah the Saranwrap should be good as soon they pop though remove it. And that t5 should be fine just watch the distance initially.

I purposely put the room at that temp because some vids and threds here said to germ i need water and warmth. I guess i over did it a little, huh! Ill drop it to about 75-80 lol! I even put a small space heater in there.
Thanx for the help

I use burpees 36 cell 10 day self water tray with a heating mat. Much better than turning the entire room into a sauna. My growrooms have their own zone on my geothermal and stay at 74 degrees day and night.

Calm down. Take the seeds and put them into a medium now. Let dry out but not too much thendry again. If not. Try again. I water soak mine. Swap out water with warm water if I don’t see tails pop in a day or two then change water and wait. Plantjust below the surface tip down. Very simple. Riot does the paper towel, plate and baggieandnails it to a wall. The gravity forcesthe tips to grow down instead of curl

Ok, my old ladies gonna kill me but I’ll buy the fan, meter, and definitely the burpees tray and mat as soon as my shift ends. Lol, i was contemplating telling the boss i had a family emergency just so i could get them in the medium now.
But seriously guys, thanx for the great advice. I definitely needed it. Ill post picks as soon as i get some to sprout. (fingers crossed)

You don’t need all that stuff bro

I’ll need a fan and ppm meter eventually anyway, right? I guess i just really needed an excuse to get it. As far as the mat...im just looking for the best way to germ. I know nothing will give me a 100% germination rate,....but Nirvana seeds aint cheep if you know what im saying.

Granted yes you don’t need the tray or the heat mat but they’re 12 bucks a piece not breaking the bank. But you will need the pens and exhaust fan and stuff especially if you doing coco or hydro.

Ok fellas
I took all the seeds out of the paper towels and put them each in a plastic cup w/ a coco/perlite mix. They’re under the t5...about a inch away.
Here are a few pics of a few of the seeds. The single seed is the one i was concerned about earlier. I think its a taproot beginning to sprout.8082D170-47FE-41D4-B2EB-A1B54985577E.jpeg 7CDE9752-B8F4-4BDA-B7C9-5F45E2EF9612.jpeg E41DDCD7-3867-458B-A82D-FB6859423312.jpeg 04B10954-776F-4A21-8213-9EE5016E4DA1.jpeg ..at least i hope it is. What do you guys think? Either way I planted it face down.
How long should i leave them be? And I should keep the room around 74degrees, right? Lastly, i know ill need an exaust set up as soon as i start to veg. But i dont have it yet so how long would you say i have before i will need to transfer to the 7gal pots and veg? Like i said, theese seeds were free so its more about getting a good grasp of this process for me right now, hence, the million questions. Thanks

Lol at all these people hating on the paper towel method. I've been doing it for a decade. It works fine. I've only ever had 4 seeds not germ and it was a batch I had ordered a few years before. So I know they were old. It's possible you just had bad seeds

Yea
I think its moreso about people’s personal preference but like i said, im just trying to find the process that works best for me. It may just be the seeds, I guess ill find out if no sprout pops in a few days.
Plus, it looks like one popped a little while it was in the paper towel. (At least it does to me) So i dont think the paper towel method doesn’t work, more than likely, it’s something i did wrong.

It's not the germing part. I'm a clutz and have broken way too many roots off during transfers. I just decided not to do the towel thing anymore.
I plant it in the final media, leave it come up without ever stirring or helping it along. Like a baby, a seed must struggle to be born to ensure vigor and strength.

That's no tap root bro. Looks like a cracked shell or some white shit got stuck on the outside shell.

Yea
I kinda figured that out already. I Dropped the beans in the coco under the t5 a few days back and still nothing. Fuck it. I’ll try germination a different way next time. Thanx for all the help tho

For me the best way to germ is by using solo cups. I use fox farm happy frog and mix some perlite with it. First drill some small holes at the bottom of the cup then add your soil mix then lightly water with ph'd water untill you have water run out the bottom. Then plant ur seed half inch down or first finger nuckle. Place it on the mat and with your light a few inches away. 100% germ rate
