You guys are both wrong. Those 100 and 125w HPS BULBS can go into any socket. It may not be safe cause most sockets are rated for that much but it will work. Now, once you get up to like 150w or something like that it goes into something called a MEDIUM MOGUL or ANSI52 or something...those are the street light looking secruity lights lowes sells. You dont get a ballast for those, nor do they make them. They are just bigger bulbs that go in a bigger socket. So yes, for the ones you have you can put them in "any old socket" and it will light up. Is it safe, probably not. All you have to do is buy a socket rated for something that high. So once again, im right. Also, the reason lowes sells some 175w and up HPS and MH bulbs is because they use to carry those lights but they dont any more. They have to continue to carry bulbs for customers who own those lights. As for the 100w and the one you got they do carry them, they have to be wired (3 wires) and you can buy a cord for like 5 bucks that has a plug on one end and bare wires on the other made for this exact thing if you dont want to buy the light fixture.
I never said it wouldnt work i was just pissed that the dude gave me the wrong input? you took it the opposite direction

Just go with the 400 watt HID after you get a heavy duty plug it's gonna cost the same. And I thought someone did answer it correctly....screw the flood light get a grow light that is more powerful and almost as cheap.

Personally I like Lowe's. They always have what I need, and at fair prices. Of course I don't buy HIDs there. That would be silly.

Nope but it sounds good, what is it? Blueberry and what? You'll like the new light too, Tony will also send you a free lighter...lol. Good luck and remember no killing baby plants with the HID, you will be happy that you got it though when it comes time to flower, nice dense buds none of those CFL type buds.

It should be OK to use CFLs for now. Romulan, I actually have a friend growing that, she likes it so far. Sounds good I might have to try some sometime. Have fun with the plants and keep us filled in on them, we like to see success stories.

It was doing very well until one of the lights fell and burned a bunch of leaves...it came around after a few weeks. hopefully it has big buds. I need more seeds but dont want to risk getting caught buying from nirvana or some other site.

worldwidemarijaunaseeds.com, safe, prompt, and very helpful. I just ordered over 300USD worth from them and they made sure I was happy.

k so its time to flower and im dying to get an hps....is there an inexpensive way to make a homemade lamp? I went to Lowes and bought one of those security lamps....before i bought it i asked the pre-occupied douche if a ballast was included and of course he said yes. Brought that bitch home and you can guess the rest. Anyways i was wondering if i could just buy the bulbs and fixtures...or something along those lines cuz 100 bucks for a 150w hps isnt very fun especially when a ballast isnt included. Anyone have any ideas? thanks
go on ebay and search for hps lighting
and they have like 400w for 109.99!! with everything u need 2 hook it up

wow. this post has gone in a lot of directions. N E way let me give u guys a heads up on the lights from Lowes/Home Depot. I use them and the 100 watt cfl floods exclusively. They work great but u have to put a little work into them. #1. Yes they do have a ballast its an internal ballast like the compact HID systems that grow stores sell usually 250 watts or less. The only difference is like someone posted u have to wire them urself (very ez). #2. HPS is HPS. they can be used for growing justlike ur grow hps lites can be used as a backyard flood lite. U can even change the bulb in them out to a grow spectrum bulb if u like just make sureits not one of thosebulbs that require a specific type of ignitor (Son-Agro i think is one of them). U also can pull them completely apart n keep the housing for the ballast run extra wires and add a hood if u want to spend the extra bucks on a reflector.

I'd like to know where people get there info. A HPS security light is fine if you're looking for red spectrum. The light sparks up, then its working. You said you wanted a ballast not a PLUG. People tell you you can't use just a bulb without a ballast and that is correct, its not an incandesant bulb, but the security light Is set up to work properly. My only problem with those kind of lights is the reflector, as it focuses the light into a sharp BEAM Instead of diffusing it. Taking the unit apart and using it without the reflector will disperse the light and making a sheetmetal reflector that you paint flat white is the cheap way out. Those security lights are usually only 150 watts, not much to be growing with. I always found them for around $5 at tag sales and flea markets or got them for free at building sites where they are remodeling old buildings. YOU DO NEED COMMON SENSE IF YOU'RE REWORKING ELECTRICAL ITEMS, though. If you're just looking for convenient plug in lights THEN you spend the money for the Grow Store stuff. Just my opinion guys, don't get your panties in a bunch. LOL
