Holodeck, anyone? Researchers at Bristol University are developing a system known as UltraHaptics that uses ultrasonic force fields to project the tactile sensations of objects in midair. Currently used for a haptic computer interface, the system might eventually enable touchable holograms.

Then, but 1 year later....

3D shapes. WoW, anyone?

"Touchable holograms, immersive virtual reality that you can feel and complex touchable controls in free space, are all possible ways of using this system," said Dr Ben Long, Research Assistant from the Bristol Interaction and Graphics (BIG) department at the University of Bristol. "In the future, people could feel holograms of objects that would not otherwise be touchable, such as feeling the differences between materials in a CT scan or understanding the shapes of artefacts in a museum."

The article talks about using an oil mist to visualize the shapes.
Did you watch the vid? I tried grabbing the paper, but it's behind a paywall and I don't think my Uni has the current issue.
Yes, they were getting "animations" to play on their oil, but the hologram part looked pretty dubious to me. That's the part I want to know more about.
