First time grower experimenting with cheap LEDs

Hi folks, just getting into the grow your own fan club, after much research, I seem to lean towards the fact that Leds offer the best conditions for optimal plant growth without too much wasted spectrum.
I am currently 10 days into a grow,as I said its my first ever ,hoping to gain some knowledge ,but also hoping I can actually see my babies all the way through.

I have decided to build a very rustic LED grow light , using some cheap LED strips (the kind people would use on Xmas trees and the like) They are SMD 5050 strips, which come in rolls of 300 lights (5 metres), I bought 2 Red and 1 Blue and broke the roll down into smaller manageable strips which I could lay out on a surface which would make the panel.

10 days into the grow and plants are looking good, I have 7 plants in total , and noticed some bleaching on 3 of the taller ones, so I have moved the panel to 2 feet above canopy.
In total these leds (about 1000 of them ,I threw a couple of whites purely for me to be able to monitor the plants better) draw 8.5 amps at 12v meaning about 104Watts, I am not concerned with lumens being lower than HPS and MH lights , because what really matters to plants is PAR ,and lumens are just brightness perceived by the human eye. A classic example is right here on this panel, the few white leds you see are in actual fact blue leds with a lens thats covered in a compound that turns that blue into white, yet the specs state that each blue LED emits only 4 lumens, but the white LED emits 20 lumens, so lumens are irrelevant really.

Anyways , I have another 6 rolls of these LEDs which will make a total in excess of 250 watts which I hope to assemble a little later as plants grow in order to accommodate their needs.

I know this is kind of a long shot, but from what I have researched on plant photosynthesis , I have no reason to doubt that this will work just fine and the myth that you need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on lighting is overated.

So here goes the beginning of my learning curve and hopefully others can also learn a thing or 2 as well , I plan to experiment later doing controlled tests with plants under different ratios of blue to red ,but for now I am going with 2R:1B.
Heat produced is mainly from resistors and very minimal, a single pc fan blowing onto the lights takes care of any heat.

I will be upgrading the cupboard I am using for this little project later, but for now the specs are :

Converted cupboard measuring in feet W:L:H 2:3:6
Lined with cheap emergency blanket reflective material , I will replace this with light proof white pvc in the next few days
Intake and extract fans will be 3 120mm pc fans
Will build some kind of DIY contraption to deal with odors when the time comes , but no filters for now.
Oh and lights are on a 20/4 schedule, I have 3 autos in there so need to give them as much as possible.
Seedlings are :
3 Barneys farm Pinneaple Express auto fem
2 THC BOMB
2 Slesstack x Skunk#1

All 7 germinated simultaneously 2 days after being soaked in warm water for 24 hrs and then planted directly into soil

Anyways here's hoping this does actually work lol.:eyesmoke:

Lol thats exactly what I had in mind surround the plant in light, will probably end up with bud growing out the root ball :idea: :weed:

I will do just that on a smaller scale , hopefully on a 16oz cup grow,now where is my soldering iron.

Yep they been under that light from the moment I placed the seeds into the pots, only thing I have done is transplanted a couple of seedlings into 10L Airpots and a 10L old paint bucket, I been adjusting the height of the lights though , keeping them on a 20/4 cycle.

Yeah lol got a stash of Pot Noodle pots I been saving(snack of choice for munchies) , will hopefully find some use for them later when I take the next step to setting up single cola SCROGs , The resistors on the LED strip did put out mild heat without the PC fan blowing onto them , but they are cool to the touch with the fan on, and besides being in the UK you will understand that a little heat is actually a good thing in the grow area this time of year :lol: , I might need a bigger fan later when I add more LEDs and when Summer comes around if it actually does.
 
hahaha im going tobe doing ten in pot noodle cups soon full grown with a 600 watt hps do u think i could get 10 -- 15 oz ?? or should i just get 2 litre pots and i dont think the summer will come its snowing in liverpool dont think that will stop till august haha

I am a complete novice to this awesome hobby, so I would not be able to tell you with certainty what yield you would get,I suppose much will depend on the strain and your dedication to the plants, but an Oz per cup ,I think is a little optimistic, been checking the 16oz cup grows and some growers get some pretty decent plants going but roughly I would aim for 8-10g dry weight from each pot. Although I am itching to try the 1L or 3L Airpots seeing as they prevent rootbound from happening, should give a much better yield although watering 2-3 times a day will be a bitch.
 
i might just try 2 litre pots ive had clones get 18 inch in them but repotted befour flowering induced ive never done air pots just coco coir from the first time i tried it i think i get abit obsessed with them ive got two clones in 1 litre pots just sitting in my kitchen with light left on till my one is done in the tent got 9 blue cheese in there with two 6oo watt hps 4 clip on fans and 10 inch extractor hoping to get 4 per plant but they was in veg for 2 months with a 200 watt cfl so with these two i just want to get loads of clones veg for 1 week then flower got loads of ideas get my self lost sometimes lol

tell me about it, I am only 11 days into my first ever grow , and am already thinking of SOGs and perpetual gardens and the like , sometimes I forget that I only really need a couple of buds to keep me afloat , I suppose I will have to research a bit on storage options now lol.

Sounds like an idea, it will make transplanting easy as you can just tear up the box, although I imagine the carton will degrade with time so only viable for short term use.

i like your idea...good luck def will be watching this grow!

Hi OG , I bought them off ebay, just do a search on ebay for smd 5050 led strips (avoid the smd 3528 they are only 1/3 as intense as the 5050 ). These are the cheap Chinese version ,which cost about 12-16 GBP or US$16-20 . They come in rolls of 5M (300 leds). You will also need a driver or adaptor for them, a good rule of thumb is to add 5 amps to every 300 lights ,so if you are looking at say 5 rolls or 1500 leds go for a 25 amp DC power supply. I actually cheat there, I just convert an old PC power supply and use it instead, you can find stuff on youtube on how to convert an atx power supply to a 12 dc output , easy as pie.

They claim that each roll uses 72 watts , but using my voltmeter has suggested otherwise, I am getting 104 watts out of 3 rolls , but it must boil down to the Chinese craftsmanship, the LEDs and resistors themselves are actually ok ,I imagine there has to be certain standards to manufacture them or they would not light up, but when it comes to the actual strip itself its awful, there is too much resistance and you have to connect power every metre or so or your voltage will diminish the further down the strip.

You can get strips of higfher quality, at about 3x the price, but personally , I am happy with the cheap version, so far its cost me less than GBP50 (Us$ 75 ) for my lighting , and the plants look fairly healthy , I even got LEd bleach on 3 of them ,which suggests they are fairly intense in the blue spectrum.

Right not much to update on , other than the LEd bleaching that developed in the 3 plants has stopped , and new leaf growth is not showing any signs after I moved the light from about 4 inches to about 15 from canopy.

Its day 11 for the 2 Sleestack xSkunk#1 and day 10 for the 2 THC Bombs and 3 Pineapple express

I have not begun any nute feeding whatsoever, and am watering every 3-4 days, first nute feed will be tomorrow, I will use a very small amount of Biobizz grow and a few drops of superthrive, due to the fact that some plants were transplanted and growth seems to have become a little stunted.
 
your doing good man youwill have your bud i showed a friend your pics today he said that it look pretty good too he said he will have t give it a go but with only one plant and maybe some floros just to beef it up a bit keep us posted man im hooked on your grow

Good to see somebody else using some 5050's. :) Although mine was on a much smaller scale and only using white LED's. Looks good so far bruv. :)
