First time DWC

Hey Everybody just wanted some opinions and well just an overall review of what going on here. Started in soil didn't have the best of luck read a lot up on DWC and choose to go with that. I'm currently about 3 weeks into veg. and this is what i'm working with. Started with two seeds (both unknown strain.) One encountered root rot but luckily with two separate res. one survived. I'm using a 150 watts HPS and 165 watts of CFL. 20hrs on 4 hrs off. Changing res every 6-7 days. Keeping pH between 5.8-6.2. Water Temp 60-73 degrees.

My nute. Schedule as of now is 5tsp of BC boost, 2.5 tsp of BC grow, .75 Tsp of Thrive Alive B-1 red, .75 tsp MagniCal, 3tsp of SugaDaddy. This is at Half recommended str. at the moment in 3 gallons of water. Unfortunately I have yet to invest in a PPM tester so i'm unaware of that at the moment.

Topped at 5th node.

The Only worry I have is the roots. So far I have great root growth and all new root growth has been white but i do have some brown.. I think it may be due to the clay rock but i did boil them before using them. Should I be worried??

Try to get your water temps down to mid to low 60's. Its harder for root rot to grow in colder water and also colder water can hold more oxygen. 63 fahrenheit is idle from what i've read and in my testings as well.

Thanks for a reply! I was looking into ways of keeping your water temp exact. Is there anything that works well or that is well known? I have experience more root growth but the brown hasn't gone anywhere.. Here's some up dates. A lot of new growth but some wilting in leaves.. What might be the problem?? help!

seriously, if you can't grow in soil, you are going to have a hell of a time with DWC, but i wish you luck, you will learn a lot.

@chuck estevez I have had success in soil and have harvested quality buds in soil. Just not to the yield that i was liking with the space that I was using. I'm clearly not doing to bad so far.. I've got a bush on my hands for my first time and everything I need to be successful. So, if maybe not you b/c you clearly aren't here to help but someone could help me fix or tell me what my problem was I'd greatly appreciate that. How the hell else are you supposed to learn. Sure as hell you didn't walk into like a pro.

Ignore the unhelpful comments from assholes, that's my first piece of advice.

Second, @WyoKush is right on the money with water temps. They make or break your roots, so keep the temps in the sixties. Believe it or not, boiling the rocks was no help. You want a colony of beneficial organisms to live with your plants in the cold water- specifically to outcompete the pathogens. Sterilizing is counterproductive because it gives the bad guys a free start, so I NEVER EVER sterilize my RDWC, not even between runs, I just keep it chilled. Use any number of methods but keep the water temps in the sixties... and keep the water itself in full darkness. Roots prefer darkness and it reduces algae and other growth.

BTW, I run RDWC- which is a lot like DWC, only think of it as a really big bucket that needs help moving all the water around.

@ttystikk

Thanks man really appreciate that. Definitely been making the mistake at keeping the water temps a little high and my res definitely hasn't been light proof. I'll try that and see what happens. If that didn't help i was thinking of using H2o2.

better read the link I posted above, the best piece of advice you will get.

One way to gage the validity of someone's advice is to look at their grow threads to see what and how they grow themselves.

I grow trees vertically in 27 gallon tuffboxes, RDWC style. No airstones, I use waterfall aeration.

A few pics to give some inspiration!

H2O2 is a sterilant and will simply perpetuate the bad cycle.

Ya gotta solve the water temperature problem to solve root health issues in water culture, it's one of the Commandments, lol

As long as my water temps were out of line, I had troubles- nothing I did helped, including peroxide. As soon as my water temps were under control, my root problems vanished, never to return.

As an experiment, I once left a bucket with rotting roots (already harvested) sit for a solid week, unaerated. Then I dumped that bucket through a strainer and straight into my working RDWC with a crop going! What happened next? Crickets... not a damn thing.

No, I'm giving very specific advice that speaks to his concerns. The pics are supportive.

Methinks you're just jealous.
