First homemade cabinet!

Whats up RIU, I'm definitely not a carpenter as you'll be able to tell but I wanted to enter the "microish, stealthish growing realm". I'm finishing up my first grow in a tent and thought this would help me pass the time while I'm waiting for harvest. Anyways, I kind of designed while I went and it's still not quite finished. Need to install a lock and fix light leaks. Got most of my supplies from Lowes and used particle board, 2 80mm intake fans, 1 120mm exhaust fan, insulated reflective mylar, a homemade carbon filter, and a Mars hydro 48x3 LED reflector series. It's about a 2x2 design, though the cabinet is bigger since I made an upper chamber for the carbon filter and exhaust.

Im germing a Super Skunk Auto currently and will start a journal on that using this cabinet in a few days. It ain't perfect but I'm pretty stoked to get some herb out of this! Thanks for checking it out.

Do you have a link to the guide for that carbon filter? Also, how much heat would you say those leds produce?

I thought the Cab came together quite well, after the first pic I expected fail, but by the fourth pic I was...well, not impressed. :D But it certainly came together quite well. GJ

I made up the carbon filter by looking at how some others did it. Got a 5" to 4" PVC reducer and epoxied it to my fan. Attached 4" ducting to it and got a 4" coupler to act as the filter chamber. Something like panty hose would be better than cheese cloth but that's all I have at the moment. I used activated carbon from the pet store.

This LED doesn't put off much heat, less than cfls. I suspect I could still burn plants though if I'm not careful.

Hmm, hard to see from the pics what you did.

What fan did you use and how loud is it? And would it not be better to put the filter on the underside and pull through it instead of pushing.(More prone to leakage.)

Sorry for all the questions. :)

No problem with the questions. You're probably right about putting the filter on the underside, I'll probably change things around if I figure something else out. I guess I'll know if I start smelling the stink!

I'll take some pictures later to help you visualize the filter better. Honestly, I don't know much about the fan. I got it used from a grow shop and it's pretty damn loud. If it ends up not working well I could fit a 4" inline fan and carbon scrubber in that upper compartment fairly easily.

Since you said it's loud it's probably just a 7000 rpm computer fan, made the mistake of getting my fingers too close to one of those once. :(

That upper compartment is stupidly huge for what you have in there. Could probably fit an inline fan a scrubber and some type of baffle and insulation if you wanted to.

Right, I'll make use of that space. It happened to become a big ass space because well, the whole design as I went thing. I wanted to leave room for what you mentioned (fan, scrubber). Baffle would be a good idea to make it stealthier. Sure it's not the best design yada yada but I'll make it work. I will add a legit exhaust and scrubber eventually. The other thing I was trying to do is do all this fairly economically, so I used stuff I had laying around (the fans, ducting, etc). Learning as I go, experimenting, that's what makes this fun!

Using what you have, and having fun, hang onto the fun part and you will be miles ahead of many people,

Been updating my journal using this cabinet in the journal section. Just wanted to show y'all how I ended up mounting the LED. @Tim Fox helped me figure this one out. I mounted as close to the ceiling as possible to give me as much vertical space as possible and prevent burn/bleaching in the future. This will give me about 10" from the top of my scrog which I posted on my journal page.
Cheers,
