First attempt at cannabutter

Hello the other day I attempted to make cannabutter for the first time. I had followed a basic recipe but just tested out different strategies. The first attempt I made, I boiled my water and added 1/2 cup of butter and boiled until melt and then added 7 grams of a good ganja chopped up as best I could. I used a grinder but the bud was a little moist. After adding the ganja I put the stove on low and simmered it for 2 hours. And then strained out the bud making sure none got in the butter. After seperating the butter was a light green tint and smelled like the bud. I baked brownies yesterday following a betty crocker recipe. They were awesome and had a slight taste of bud. They got me high but not quite what i was expecting. After trying that out I thought maybe i didnt cook on a high enough tempature and not long enough and aslo thought the bud could be busted up a little better.
So last night I busted up another 7 grams(this time it was almost powder), I brought water to a boil added 1/4 cup of butter, 7 grams of nice dry bud. My first attempt once I added the bud I switched to a low temp, this time I left it on a high temp for an hour and then kept it around med for an hour, and then let it simmer for 2.
My result this time, The butter is a way darker green. I will be baking a cake later tonight. Will be eating tommorrow for thanksgiving.
Any thoughts? question? comments? post backbongsmilie

The second attempt, I did in fact get higher then the first. Will be attempting to cook 2-3 hours on high and then 2-3 hours on low. Any comments on this?

This is probably a little off topic but does the bud or stems, leaves, etc. have to be dry to make cannabutter or can it be fresh from a recent harvest?

Should be dry. When the buds are fresh not all of the thc it contains is active therefore will not get you as high.bongsmilie

I usually make mine in a crockpot and use one stick of butter and one stick of imperial margerine. I add as much bud as I can and make sure it is dry. I usually set mine for about 7 to 8 hours. The more stinkier it is to me the more potent to me, I never use less than 20 to 30 grams per batch. I use mine in popcorn balls and rice crispy treats and brownies. I get bombed for about two days on that and I am a lightweight. I prefer injestion to smoking

Oh that's a good idea!!!! And I love the rice crispy treat idea. I bet it would taste great with some M&M's in them or something like that.

Can you make the cannabutter just with the leaves and branches or do you have to use some bud too? I want to try to keep as many buds as I can from my grow for smoking.

every part of the plant goes in, only butter comes out, lol
not seeds tho

LOL! Okay, but what about the "fresh" part? Does it have to be dried or can it be fresh? I mean the whole plant. Does the leaves and stems have to be dried or can they be fresh (green, with moisture still in them)?

it must be dried! it'll still work with fresh herb, but it tastes like shit. the drier the better

Thanks I originally was gonna try 2hr/2hr low. I thought maybe I would get higher from 3hrs but I will try 2.
Also I think I am going to use different butter next time. I picked the butter that was on sale but didn't think to check the fat percentage. My butter contains 8gs of fat per 2 tsp.
Now I checked another butter that is in my fridge and it has 11gs per 2 tsp. But the only problem of using that one is that it is a salted butter which I read you should use unsalted.

Never hurts to try different things.
So many methods, so little time.:bigjoint:

i've used salted and unsalted, the only difference i've found is some recipes don't use salted butter well... same potency in my exp.

Here is my newest attempt at cannabutter and cookies. I used about 20 grams of sugar leaves and 1 stick of butter. I cooked on a high boil while covered for 2 hours and 2 hours on low. My best batch of butter yet. I used a betty crocker recipe to make 1 batch of cookies which called for half cup of butter(or one stick). Made 2 dozen cookies. 3 of us ate 3 cookies each at about 1:30 in the afternoon. I am still feeling the high. Had a relaxing lazy bake since about 4bongsmilie
