Filthy Roots

I have a problem with my roots - they are filthy brown in colour.. My temps in the room hover @ around 30 degrees celcius. I'm not sure wat the temps of my res are.. (I think they r up there tho). Could this be my issue or is something else plaguing me??

This is most often stain from nutes. If the res doesn't have a bad smell and the plants look good, I wouldn't worry.

Hey Blazin, hopefully I can help you figure out how to lower that temp! 30 (C) translates to roughly 86 (F) which is way to high for any DWC res to be at. Your roots enjoy water that is 65-75 degrees because at those levels, oxygen can thrive in your system, but also it could be a number of factors. Why not try to explain your system in a little detail and I can do the best to help you :). Hope to hear back soon

The centigrade people need to start putting it in F to get US responses. Yes 86 is too high but I still doubt that is the cause of the discoloration if it doesn't smell bad. You may be lucky that root stain brought you to realize you are running too hot.

I get root stain @ 70 degrees . I think the roots are just clinging to nutes because after a few days it all clears up. It usually happens to me around a day or so after rez change then dissipates. whens the last time you changed nutes?

Hight temps will rot your roots and turn them nasty slimy brown. Fox Farm nutes will turn them brown too. I think Techna Flora has a product that does the same. I agree with Illegal Smile...if it smells bad, looks bad, and your plants health is bad, then it's real bad. Other than that just let the roots do there thing. I stopped looking at mine so much. I mean, I put alot of effort into lightproofing my tank to keep cracking it and looking at my roots letting light just flood in. I know I coulod look when the lights were off but then I couldn't see. It finally sunk in to me that roots like to think they're in dirt and it's dark and cold in dirt.

Hey Guys, thanks for the responses.. I've dropped some iced-water bottles in there to help keep it down.. The plus side there is I figure it won't affect my PH..

My system is 2 plants in their own pots that have roots hanging into a tub of water that circulates constantly from the Res with plenty of Airstones..
I changed Nutes about 5 days ago now..
