Fan Selection

Just wondering if anyone is having trouble deciding on a fan? I'm growing in a space that only requires 50cfm. On top of that I'm inside of a 4x4 tent so the cfm requirement is even less. Do I have to go inline fan or can I use a duct fan to vent my 600w HPS and filter?

inline 250 cfm fan is minimum id recommend for 600w with filter. Personally id get a 6'' vortex with a speed controller...

If this article is true then I only need 16-32cfm for the tent itself. Your saying a 600w light and a filter would require roughly 200cfm?

The real question is... Is it possible to use a duct fan instead of the inline fan. Space is an issue and it looks more efficient for a small grow tent

article is WRONG! you need what i said for a 600w. look at it like a 4x4 space with a 600watt heater in there. you really think 16-32cfm would cool that? NO...Inline fans are designed to deal with the pressure created from the filter used. Duct fans do not create the pressure needed for a 600w with filter. Get a inline fan, get it bigger then needed so you can control it with fan controller to keep it quiet.

You can use a duct fan to cool the light but you would need a seperate fan duct fan for the filter. You need 200 to 400 cfm's for a 600 watt and 400 to 600 cfm's for a 1000 watt. The range depends on how hot it is where you live.

To do it all in one shot with the fan/filter/hood combo, and it's cool where you live, the 6 inch vortex should do it. If it's really hot you may need the 8 inch. Don't forget that you loose about 40% of the fan's cfm's when you have the filter hooked up and another 10% from the hood and ducting. The 6 inch vortex at 450 cfm's turns into about 225 when everything is said and done. That's right at the minimum you need for a 600 watt. That being said the 8 inch may be a safer bet. The 8 inch vortex at 600 cfm's becomes about 300 after the hook up and that's what I would think would be good for a 600 watt.

I just went through this whole process with my tent. I have a 3x3x6 tent and a 400 watt. I'm also using a filter. I'm using a 4 inch vortex fan and it's perfect. The vortex is a little louder but it's worth it. They're nice fans. Built in Canada not China. They also have a 10 year warranty. I had a sunleaves at first and it malfunctioned in a week. Sunleaves are made in China. I'm sticking with Vortex from here on out.

Thanks for the info man. I thought I could get away with a fan filter rated for 190cfm to cool the light and attach to the filter. Well I'm on a tight budget and an even tighter space. The tent is 4'x4' and so is the space so it's a tight squeeze. Only have less than a foot of overhead with the tent inside of the closet. Is there a huge difference in size between the inline and duct fans.

Hang the filter and fan inside the tent and push through the hood. Inline fans are typically bigger than duct fans but if you're really in a tight space phresh has an inline fan with a built in speed controller that is tiny. I have the 6 inch and it's as small as a 4 inch duct fan.

4x4 is a bigger tent than I have so I'm a little confused as to why space is an issue for you. I've got my filter in the back left corner of my tent. My fan is hooked up directly to the filter. The fan pulls through the filter and I have ducting attached to the fan that exits the top sock of my tent, bends around and enters the left side sock and goes back into the tent. The ducting then goes into the hood then out the other side of the hood then exits the tent. I'm pulling through the filter and pushing through the hood. After the ducting leaves the other side sock it travels until it is attached to a window vent that I constructed with a dryer louver that is attached to a piece of wood that fits in the window. I have all of the vents in the tent closed so I have an intake fan. Inside the tent I have an oscillating fan and two 6 inch fans.

I run a 4x4 with a 600w cool tube using a ventech 4in inline fan (50$) pulling through my filter and pushing air through my light and extracted outside with 2 clip on fans for circulation and a passive intake my temps daytime high are 77-79 and nightime 62-66

Can you recommend a fan speed controller to keep a 4" inline fan literrally whisper quite so its just operating at its lowest ?

cheers

first go to the diy section, and build a sound dampening box for your fan. It's basically a wooden box hung by eye hooks and bungees, and there are t shirts and whatnot to absorb the vibrations and reduce the sound. You could make one yourself for probably 20-30$
I use the speedster controller, but it does a wierd pitched humming sound when you turn it down. the speedster is 20$ or so, but i hear variac speed controllers are the way to go , but they cost much more

The tent is not the problem at all. The tent is 48x48x78 so I had less than 6 inches between my ceiling and my tent. Never thought to put fan inside of tents. Rookie here. Going to have to make a hole to vent exhaust from. Will a 400cfm fan be strong enough, or recommended, for this setup - exhaust fan ---600w light---- carbon filter? With a 400cfm fan how cool does everyone's 600 watters run? How close can I put my lights with this setup?

Definitely an option. I've seen them on amazon and eBay and the price is right up my alley. Glad I'm not the only one thinking of them. How does it handle smell bro?
