Every Man Needs A Code...

Anyone who has seen Game of Thrones will remember the scene where Arya Stark is on a horse with The Hound. She asks him why he has no money, and he replies he is not a thief, to which she replies that he murders children etc etc. He then says something along the lines of "Every man needs a code..."

Now this sentence really got my cogs turning. I was taught by my father to have principles from a young age, and to respect others. He always said, "There will always be someone bigger than you out there, and then there is God". Aside from that, I grew up on Christian teachings throughout school etc, and I DO believe in God, and believe I will answer for my good and bad deeds.
(I have been known to break my code(s) when delving out punishment to sick people I have met in my life, but I do believe I will answer for these crimes also, I am human after all.)

Now looking at the 'CODE' bit of the title.... Do people without religion have a code? Do these codes conflict with other people living with different codes? Do mankind need a code to live? If we all made our own codes up, would the world be a better place or not? What right do we have as individuals to decide what is right and wrong?

I can give you a few examples from my own life. When I was younger, a friend turned up on my doorstep all flustered and he informed me he had been slapped by his girlfriend's brother for seeing her when he had already been warned to stay away from her. He was telling me to go round and beat this brother of hers.

I knew the guys family, and knew they were very religious and didn't believe in dating/sex before marriage. The friend of mine was from a similar family background. So I said to him, I will go beat this guy up for you, but when the same situation happens with your sister, I will not take sides with you, but the guy who is dating your sister. He was quiet then, and said you are right, and it ended there. Now if I had no principles, religions or codes, I would have probably gone round and kicked this guys head in and then ended up arrested etc etc...

Second story was quite recent, where a dude rang me up telling me that a dealer was knocking on his door asking his son to pay off his weed debt. He was telling me to come down and sort this dealer out, for disrespecting his home by knocking on the door. I asked if he had cleared the debt, and he said no, followed by silence. So I said, the guy is owed money, pay him, and it is resolved. He didn't like my response, and I would bet he or his son have still not paid the debt. (The guy who rang me btw, steals, cheats, spies on people, gossips, loads of other qualities I don't even want to go into.)

Anyway, out of these two examples, some of you may think I am a dickhead. I thought I had done the 'right' thing according to my codes, but some people may differ on the matters...

There are a lot more thoughts spinning around in my head regarding the title of this thread, so it is probably best discussed with like minds on here :)

Certainly.

Religion has no monopoly on morality, as all morality has its roots in SURVIVALIST BEHAVIORS that are inherent in any living species.
