I think it would be cool to do a side-by-side to show what defoliation can do to yields. You are in the perfect spot to test it and show everyone that hasn't seen it yet.

Defoliation will help all lighting systems.

If you have a wide enough space you could hang the LED on either side and put a small HID in the middle:

I X 0 X I

Then grow out both vertically, topped, trained and defoliated. You wouldn't need anything bigger than a 150W HID for that, I would still switch between HPS and MH when needed.

One thing I found to help is enough veg time so the plant can be trained and tipped for flower. Above the third true node, top. Then, above the fifth true node, top. Finally, above the sixth node, top. From here, hit the flower button with eight colas.

Thinking about this.....it may eventually be the final upgrade to balance out the wattage I'll be running with the cooler RDWC in massive 12 gallon buckets. But I'm pretty deep already willing to get the buckets and pumps to make the RDWC system. I'd probably go with at least a 600w HPS in which case I'd need to double check my electrical because I wasn't anticipating that. After a couple crops that made my investment worth it though.

Comparing his plants and yours at this stage I wouldn't doubt you have it in the bag. Every comparison I've seen up to now has LED finishing longer than HID, you'll know when to chop when the trichs change.

A 315 cmh would be a good choice equals 500w. of hps with a lower power draw than a 400w. hps they also run a lot cooler than hps

And I'm kinda hoping I still got a solid couple weeks of bud growth! Lol. I was figuring 2 more of good growth 2 of ripening and releasing major resin.
Yeah you're still a ways off & buds still developing is good first grow or not you've nailed it all I can say is take notes & duplicate it

Well you have been seeing my nail it through Flower, I wasn't in here in the journal through my flumps. Like I said I was stunted for about 3 weeks of my 2 month veg. I haven't decided if next round without stunting if I should shorten my veg to end up with simmiliar size or keep same veg and enter flower with bigger plants. I know usually bigger plants is the answer. But with LED lack of penetration, I'm not sure if with my lighting going bigger will be effective or not.

ceramic metal halide they rock as far as a light that takes a bulb they are supposed to be the best they come in 315 ,630 & a 630 double ended fixture & bulbs different kelvin ratings as far as efficiency & color spectrum they're way better than hps there is a lot of info over in indoor growing

Well you have been seeing my nail it through Flower, I wasn't in here in the journal through my flumps. Like I said I was stunted for about 3 weeks of my 2 month veg. I haven't decided if next round without stunting if I should shorten my veg to end up with simmiliar size or keep same veg and enter flower with bigger plants. I would seriously consider developing your dwc recirculating setup you've got ideas & thoughts i say follow up on them if you have a nice even canopy you can get away with less penetration of light

I've seen some rather large plants under the CXA 3590 COB, I'm actually looking into those.

Ceramic Metal Halide lamps do look great, some come with the option to boost the 315W to 380W. The only problem is, they don't produce enough light to compare with a 400W.

This is a problem with PPFD, I read an article that outlines the difference between HID and LED and PPFD was explained. Plants will benefit more from a higher PPFD than a higher CRI.

I've searched for CMH ops and HPS ops to compare, CMH makes a great supplemental light but I wouldn't use it for a main light.

I've read advertisements saying it can replace a 600W HID, and every grow I've seen has yet to pull a pound from one light.

@TheStickMan pulled a pound from a single 400W HPS, I've seen 600W do much more than that.

Do what you want, experiment and have fun doing it.. just don't believe the hype.

Yea I'm pretty sure I could take advantage of slightly larger plants with my current lighting. With how short these girls are they are really impressing me with the yield so far.

I mean they probably aren't over 30 inches tall. After the time I stunted them from trimming, they like refused to grow vertically and only would grow wider.

LED COB is what the article pointed to. The issue was light spectrum and the amount of light produced.

Even though the higher CRI emitters generate a more true colour light the photon flux is reduced compared to lower CRI emitters.

In other words, you'll grow more with a lower CRI because of PPFD.

You also might notice a bit more flavour with the higher CRI since the spectrum is better, there is just less of it.

I've defoliated until only sugar leaves are left.

Yea I guess I'm having a hard time knowing for sure which are which....even my fan leaves grew some crystals

That's why I like that with my model they went with the 5 watt diodes where as most do 3 watt. I felt it would help make up for some of what the other LED lights lacked.

Like for instance the three bigger leaves extending to my fingers I feel are not "sugar" leaves but I'm not sure as they are so "sugary" lol

What happened, inadvertinatly, is known as supercropping. I bet where the damage was there is a huge knuckle now.

I've always found it odd that the plant responds like that to damage, instead of blocking it off the plant bulks it up.

You can do this by slightly squeezing the stalk repeatedly.

Your ladies are looking better everyday!

I wouldn't pull any leaves growing from the flowers, just the fan leaves from the stalk and stems. The sugar leaves will photosynthesize right at the flower allowing them to gain weight and frost, the fan leaves are just getting in the way at this stage of life.

So those three leaves are fan leaves not sugar leaves, they have a little stem sticking out beyond the flower
