DWC Root Slime Cure aka How to Breed Beneficial Microbes

Im not trying to be rude Heis..i just feel that so long as you have good EWC and mollases your good to go..but i understand your theory about making a real power tonic

I really wasn't disagreeing. Where the microbes come from is a matter of choice. If you get them from EWC alone, that's your prerogative. I've been saying for a long time that people shouldn't get hung up on exact amounts or exact brands. What's important is the method.

Ok awesome. Does this go away at some point or will my roots always have that now?

In my experience it will diminish over time but the roots will always be a little stained in those spots.[/QUOTE]

Have you had your air stones clog up on you with this tea? I have the micro pore air stones and two of mine aren't pumping out the full amount of bubbles because it seems like they're clogged.

I've have had that happen, and it is a common complaint with micropores. As it is now I use regular airstones and only have to change them about every 6 months, at which point is soak them in strong h2o2 and then boil them, and they're ready to go again. I only have to replace them if they break from getting stepped on. Here is what I use, http://www.hydroponics.net/i/132920

Hello Heisenberg (the DWC Doctor) and thank you very much for this mind stimulating and very beneficial thread!!!
I will be trying the tea very soon and will let ya know how it works. I will be using it before the white slime starts and I'm certain it will!
Question 1: if I'm only using it before or at the beginning of the white slime how many cups per gallon should I add to my DWC res?
Question2: can I use bat guano I stead of the EWC or AF?
Question3: can I use bat guano WITH the EWC or AF in the tea for added benefits??
Thanks again brother!

when making the tea, should it be dark and light proof, in the light to promote growth, or does it matter?

has anyone tried both ways? I currently keep it dark. not getting foam but the tea is working well so not too concerned about it.

Fuck Brown Slime Algae, Fuck Brown Slime Algae, Fuck Brown Slime Algae, Fuck Brown Slime Algae, Fuck Brown Slime Algae, Fuck Brown Slime Algae.

I have cleaned everything for the last time. If it comes back this time I am going Hempy.

I don't know what I am doing wrong, I have read that this is fool proof method and being one has been easy so far but I have followed the directions to the letter and it comes back.

I have never been so depressed as the feeling I get when the slime takes over AGAIN.

Sorry to hear you're suffering because of the slime. I know how you feel. I gave up on DWC for a year because I got the slime from the first res and every other res change. Today is a week for me in DWC with no slime thanks to Heisenberg Tea. Let us know what your set up is we might be able to help ya troubleshoot your problem!!!!

I am running an 8 gallon tote that I got from Stealth Hydro (I know I could have done it myself cheaper)

I have a 1/10 hp chiller

I am only using 2 of the 6 holes for plants

Humboldt nutes

I have tried tea using Mycogrow, hydroguard, EWC

the newest batch I tossed the EWC and picked up the Ancient Forest

I have 2 RW-75 LEDs from Area 51

2 airstones with a bigger airpump from Walmart

I have tossed in some Hygrozyme and I Swear I could see the slime take off.

I have cleaned the setup completely at least 4 times, which included taking everything apart and cleaning with H2O2 or Bleach or Phasan 20. Along with trying to remedy the problem with out a complete tear down countess times ( I am in a closet in an Armoire so it is a chore to disassemble.)

the slime has always been clear except this time it was a dirty brown

I don't know what else to say, let me know if you have any questions

What's the temp of your res?
What's the temp of the tea when you brew it and how long do you brew it for?
Keep in mind, as the master himself emphasized many times (and I'm still in the process of reading the entire thread), the tea works best when the temp of the res is in the low to mid 70s.
Can you show pics of this slime? You can get a biofilm from using the tea. Thats not what youre seeing is it?
I hope someone here with some experience chimes in as I'm the result of a google search for noob :-P

In my experience since writing this thread, the biggest factor for bringing on slime for me is temperatures. If you already have an established consortium of bennies they will help guard against high res temps, but if you currently have slime you have to get your res temps down for them to have a chance. I've said before that correcting res conditions is the first thing that should be done. If you have slime then it's a good bet that res conditions are bad, but it's not a sure thing. You may have perfect res conditions and simply added the wrong product which brought on slime. In any case, bennies will have limited effectiveness unless you get your res temps down to low 70's.

I no longer brew tea for maintenance. I use kangaroots for some base bennies when I place plants into flower, and only once. I do this to ensure I have vigorous roots and also to prevent gnats breeding in the water. At 10ml per 5 gallons, a bottle lasts a long time. Before plants go into flower, I use no bennies. Instead I use rhizotonic which causes an explosion of roots. This is sloppy - I should be using some bennies on young plants. Since I do not, I have been slimed the last two summers. That has happened because I have forgotten to turn on the exhaust fan for my tent the last two summers (don't need it in the winter or spring) and the tent has gotten hot. It's usually less than 24hrs before I have discovered the problem, but, both summers, that short time was enough to bring on slime. It's interesting to note that it only affected newly rooted cuttings. The mothers in the tent were unaffected.

Now, I recommend people follow my original instructions for fighting slime because every situation is different. However, my situation is such that I did not even change the res on the effected plants. Turning on my fan takes care of the temp problem, and I simply brewed some tea and added it. I didn't even rinse the slime from the roots. Two days later I can clearly see new root growth coming through the slime.

Anyway, my main point is that bennies can help you get things back to normal, but they will not circumvent improper res conditions, especially high temps/low oxygen.

"Slime" is a generic term. All that we can be sure of is that it's non-beneficial microbes growing out of control. Not everyone has the same type of slime. In my experience, slime is generally not pathogenic, but it does strangle roots cutting off their oxygen, and this can quickly lead to root rot (Pythium, Verticillium, Phytophthora, and Fusarium) which can eventually enter the plant's system.
Heinz , I have always used Kangaroots for rooting and periodic microbe adds. Do you think it is comparable to the Tea or other Microbe products ?

Hygrozyme can FEED the slime. Don't use it or any enzyme product in the res when you have a problem! This could be your problem. The bennies produce enough enzymes to fight with.

thanks, but I think I covered that when I said I could watch the slime get worse when I put hygrozyme, that is what I meant when I said "take off".

I have done at least 2 full cleans since using a zyme

my res is set for 65 degrees, I will raise it

I think I have seen this biofilm, but this last clean out the slime was brown and nasty. I did not take any pictures.

EDIT: I reread the original post and I now see the part about the res temps, thanks again

Has anybody have experience using Ridomil and the tea? The other question would be would Ridomil kill the friendly bennies?
