Ok so I've done my research and I've decided it's time to try dwc! I pretty much understand everything except the ppm level, as in refilling the res with water/nutes and such can someone help me please

Start slowly and go off of your plant/rez response.

If your ph goes up and your ppm goes down you could add more nutes.

If you ph goes down and your ppm goes up you have too much in there and need to lower it.

Ideally, you want your ppm to stay consistent. This means the plant has the ideal ppm it wants. It is drinking an even amount of water and nutes.

ppm measure the amount of nutrients in the water. Closer to Zero the less nutes in water, higher the number the more nutes there is. ordinary water would roughly have between 0-400 ( depends on your city standard) Unless you use bottle water or another system). PPM doesn't add up.*a general guide is that you use no nutes(just plain water ) from 0 to 2-3 weeks. 3-4 weeks you use 1/4 strength(200-400ppm), then 3-4 weeks 1/2 strength(500 to 700ppm) and 4-5 weeks full strength(800-1100ppm).to mix nutes you start with plain water + add nutes, then check ppm. if its to high then take out some of the solution and add water to lower it. if the ppm is to low then add more nutres until you reach the proper ppm level. Also keep in mind some nutrients will get absorb at different ph levels so check your nutes to see what they prefer. but most people use 5.5 to 5.7 in early grow. They usually absorb the most nutes then.

Dwc needs much less nutes than other types of growing. I never go above 600-650ppm. Change it once a week, keep temps low, and use a good beneficial.

Thanks for the replys as I am a NEWB and am planning to start a dwc system nothing big just a 4 plant setup.this is what I plan to do(pointers and opinions are needed) I'm going to do a 4 plant dwc set up, one 400 watt hps for flower and one 400 watt mh for veg.
all in a stealth home made tent totally covered in Mylar grow room liner for the best lighting and a regular small desk fan for air. Also making a home made carbon filter... Hope y'all can understand that and let me know if I'm missing something! Thanks :bigjoint:

There are so many things absolutely incorrect in your post that it hurts.

Why do people try to help when they are lost themselves? It just confuses so many more by reading such nonsense!

PPM surely adds up! How would it not? If you are unaware of how PPM should be viewed, as so many others are, then ask! My water PPM is ~200. That means that no matter how much water I add back into my UC setup, my base PPM is ALWAYS 200ppm! You then can only figure out what your system is doing once you understand that!

No nutes for 2-3 weeks? I give my seeds nutes as soon as they crack and show signs of a strong sprout! I put the seeds in a rockwol cube and net pot with hydroton into a DWC setup with (water ~200ppm and 100-150ppm of nutes)! Come on now. If you have 6 months to grow a plant that is worthy to flower, then by all means follow your recommendations! Also, by trying to even suggest PPM levels is ludicrous! People need to learn how to read their plants and not a bunch of BS on web boards!

I wonder this myself... I mean sometimes I think the growers who "know" just keep it to themselves so the others can stumble around with issues. I mean thinking for yourself is the main attribute that I consider important in growing, sad most can't even do that in growing and probably in life in general.

Sorry if you miss understood my post. Forgot to copy this was general guide. obiously this will not apply to every1. Anyone with half a brain will agree with that. and about the ppm not adding up was for a respond regarding the orginal thread about the way he was specificly mixing his nutes. So next time dont judge a post so quick.

I'm on my second grow and have recently dealt with a lot of your questions. I have two plants in two independent bubble buckets. I check them every 12 hours, and this is my routine.

1) Say Hi.
2) Slide back lid of one bucket to see how far the water level has dropped. Also use a ppm meter on what's in there to see how the ppms are. If I need to add water, I do that first. I've mixed a liter of nutes at full strength, which I keep close by. If my ppm level has dropped, I add a splash of the mix to the res and stir it around. Repeat until my ppms are where I want them. Then I check and adjust PH. And replace the lid.
3) Repeat for second plant.
4) Inspect leaves for problems, clean up tent area of any splashes or fallen leaves.
5) Adjust fan if lights are on, or close up tent if lights are off.

The whole routine takes as little as three minutes, but usually about eight to 10. Simple.

As for ppms, I have burned seedlings, so I don't nute them until they're 2-3 weeks old, and they grow just fine. But remember, even my water is 130ppm. By the time they're 2-3 weeks old, I run about 200-300, including my water. At 4 weeks, 400. etc. At 8 weeks I'm at 800, and that's where I stay. No more than that. And it's worked well for me. I'd rather correct for a deficiency than burn my plants.

surpirsed no one has mentioned their conversion factor.... i think if your meter calibrates in 1382 solution you have .7 meter.... if 1401 solution then .5 my numbers may be all kinds of off because i am a stoner and going off memory but the moral is there are 2 different conversions.

slanty is correct, in dwc you have to provide nutes to the seedlings. they have enough juice in the cotyledon leaves to pop a pair of true leaves but thats it. if you go 3 weeks with no nutes you will have a dried up dead seedling by the time you add nutes. 2-3 weeks until beginning nutes is soil advice.
