drying in low humidity

What's up guys needed some help. Ready to harvest but it's winter where I am an the humidity is really low in my house 15 20% I can get it up to 35% with my humidifier was going to try to dry in my 4/4 tent but not sure if I can fit everything in there otherwise would be in a bigger room but anyway I'm always nervous about drying cuz I always mess it up an loose all the smell an taste. Think I figured out Its my drying process. Or there drying to fast. I've been harvesting the whole plant just taking some of the big fans off an let dry 3 or 4 days an pull the rest of the big fans an let dry more 2 days maybe then trim an jar. But by the time it gets in the jar it's lost its good smell an don't come back with cure. What do you guys do in low humidity situations. An do you wet or dry trim. Thanks

I most definitely encountered this problem after moving from Wisconsin to Colorado. First of all I dry trim, slows the dry down a lot and I believe that you damage less trichomes compared to wet trim. Second thing I do is hang my buds(still on the branch and sugar leaf still on bud) in cardboard boxes and DO NOT open them for a week. THat is the minimal amount of time it takes for me to get proper moisture levels. At first I was worried about mold but I havnt encountered it yet. You said you were thinking of drying in your grow tent, that would work great. Your dry time may be different but the more you open your drying "chamber" the faster it dries. Another thing you can do is put your drying area next to an exterior window. The condensation that builds on the window in winter will increase the humidity in that general vicinity. Also if you can keep exterior air out of your home as much as possible that will allow the humidity inside to rise.

After everything is said and done I jar my buds and try to retain a certain level of moisture within the bud. This allows the curing process to continue. A lot of people in Colorado know how to grow but don't know how to dry/cure. Since ive started slowing down the dry I consistently hear from people I have some of the best tasting/smelling weed they come across.

thanks for the Reply man ya I was going to try to dry in the tent but that's not going to work need the tent for the upcoming clones an got next round in there ready to go into bloom plus wouldn't have the room f o r 12 girls in there. Got different room up stairs go in to drying but rhythm is 25% got the door closed an my little humidifier go in trying to get the rh up might go by bigger humidifier tommorow. But should the bud smell like bud when done with the dry.

It should have a much more noticeable smell when dried compared to what you were getting previously. There will probably be alittle grassy smell left but that should dissipate quickly after you jar. After I jar my bud and the moisture redistributes I try to have my weed similar to a "firm sponge"consistency. Remember that moisture is necessary for the curing process to continue. Your going to have to do alittle experimenting in order to get it right for your particular circumstance.

A closed cardboard box in a dry environment is great. You can hang them, or just separate them in layers by copy paper, but then they will become flat... (doesn't really matter imo)

After a few days, you can wrap the box in saran wrap, tape it up, and poke a hole in the top for poking your finger in and smelling. Then you can just tape up the test hole when you're done testing/burping.

o and question about the cardboard box been seeing lots of people use boxes to dry now wouldnt this cause a faster dry. im going to try some in a box in that room and goin to hang some and see what happens

^^Nah as long as you keep the box closed you will be good to go. I assume you are asking because you are thinking the box will absorb moisture right?

Yep. Also had a question about curing usually use glass but sucks burping 100 jars so was thinkin 5 gallon food grade buckets to sweat or cure then into the glass what u guys think

Make a drying box like this. Maybe use a wardrobe box to dry larger quantities. Get one of these $25 humidity switches to control a fan (PC fan or 4" inline booster fan).

Using this setup, you can set the humidity to 85% and it will get the drying down to that level automatically. Then, push the down-arrow button to walk the humidity down 2% every day. In 10 days it will be at 65%. Completely automatic and independent of your ambient humidity. It will automatically introduce enough fresh air to keep the humidity inside the box where you want it. (If you were in a humid area you could use it to operate a dehumidifier.).

I've got the switch and box but haven't had time to set it up yet. I intend to put a flap (thin cardboard or plastic) over the inlet and outlet holes in a way that they'll blow open when the fan is on. I.e., just tape the top of the flap to act like a hinge. When my ambient humidity is 20%, I really need a sealed drying area so the humidity in the box will hold where I want it. A couple of open holes would allow it to dry faster than I want.

What's up guys all done harvesting hung for 8 days stems did not snap at all still had flex so trimmed up an let sit for 1day more then into the buckets burped them till I got to 65 to 68 then into glass rh sis between 62 65. I don't know if I'm doin this wrong cuz it don't have that dank that it had when growin. Don't get me wrong stuff dosent smell like grass or hay or mold. Smell is kinda there when I take a sample out but if I open the jar an give a sniff its just not there. Stuff look is killer to I don't know maybe it's the strains or it to fresh . I find it hard to believe that all the strains I got are junk think go in to order new stock what are some dank strains that have that dank smell.

What's goin on guys wanted to give an update. Stuffs been in jars for about week an a half or so have rh gauge in jars . Rh is steady at 63 goes up to 65 sometimes buds are little squishy or have a little give to them . When I crack the jar I get that dank I'm lookin for then it goes away my question is do I leave the jars sealed at that rh cuz if I leave the jar open to long buds get crispy an don't really moisten back up . Also if I leave sealed at 62 will it go down overtime or stay there. Never can get this part right but have to say so far this us the best it's come out but stll don't really like it I'm buying crap instead of smoking my own. My brother says I'm crazy an that thestuff is bomb I don't no Mabe it's to fresh for my likeing.

Dry it out and smoke it. Leave a bud out till it's dry, then squeeze it with your fingers until it crumbles. Do your fingers smell the dank?

Get some boveda 62% humidity packs, they sell them on amazon. They work great for rehydrating bud thats alittle dry. I would also recommend getting a jar strictly for smoking and leaving the rest of the jars closed as much as possible. As time progresses your weed is only gonna get danker, but if you open your jars on the regular you may once again find yourself with weed that doesnt have that deep funky smell. Good to hear your on the right track tho, remember its all about patience.

And to answer your question about dank smelling strains. I would HIGHLY recommend chiesel or plushberry. Those are the only two strains I have ever come across that smell dank immediately after the dry. Plushberry has been discontinued but Chiesel is readily available. The plant literally has it all...crazy bag appeal, smell, taste, and high. Plus dial her in and she will yeild like a Blue Dream

Ya if I let sit out till crumble it's dank same when I first crack the jar then it goes away turns into some other smell I'm can't explain it. But strain is train wreck I got others to blue dream pineapple skunk lemon og bubblegum an cheese. I tell u the only one that smells good right after harvest is lemon og but don't really like lemon. So what's it magic all of a sudden u open the jar an it's dank lol I doont no it's just aggravating but I've never got them in jars an had the rh gauge read 62 before it's always been to dry so did one thing right I think
