Is there any tips one can give for drying out those big fat colas? My last grow I got some mold in my buds and eventually my whole stash was ruined with what smelled like homeless guys' sweat socks.

I had a grape god that had this problem, I had to cut those big buds up as soon as I chopped the plant. If I tried to hang dry without a dehumidifier I was boned with the mold. You might need to do that and even put a small fan on the buds if the humidity is too high. Just use fan or dehumidifier till bud is somewhat dry and then cure like normal.

I was thinking of making a dry box out of wood ,screens and a pc fan...last time I dried bud I hung it in my water heater closet... They came out crunchy like fritos

Cut the big buds up, up. In the thicker parts, cut them entirely off the fat stem.

You don't need to do anything else special. Just put them on some paper in a cardboard box.

so the whole drying box is not needed... why are people get mold of the buds. is that just from not breaking it down..

Here in CO, its 22rh so I put them in one of my 4x4 tents and close it up. rh gets to about 55% which is ideal imo. Sounds like the reverse problem, but even here we will break up those big buds cause they will get moldy otherwise.

I grow single cola sea of green style where each plant ends up lookin like a mini xmas tree & weighing between 2 to 3 ounces per bud .

For drying i pluck out all the fan leaves then dig deep to get as much stem & leaf material possible out of the buds , after trimming i lay the whole bud in the multi shelf fish net type drying racks , humidity kept at 30% or less & with slight air circulation over the buds , i flip the buds daily .

After 2 to 3 days the fat ass colas are crunchy on the outside so i place them whole into xxx large freezer bags overnight at room temp , 24 hrs later the dry outer bud pulls alot of moisture from the inner bud & they are wet again so back in the drying rack till the outer bud is crisp again .

Then back in freezer bags another day until buds are moist , then back in racks overnight & they are crispy again in 12 hrs , then back in freezer bags until any moisture is present , once again back in rack overnight .

I just keep repeating the rack to freezer bag process for about a week , if you dont have a moisture meter ( Grainger Supply $70 ) you can throw a Club rolling paper in the freezer bags with the buds when their getting close to being dry & the paper will show any moisture .

After im sure they are dry i just vent the bags by leaving them open for an hour a day for the next 2 weeks , total dry/cure time is 3 weeks, no mold , no musty smell or wet hay smell just skunky smelling big ass buds , you dont need to chop up large buds you just need low humidity , room temps & constant air flow .

Or an amazon box. For my last harvest, I took a few small amazon boxes and lined the bottom with a piece of copy paper, put 1 layer of buds in, another copy paper, 1 layer of buds, copy paper, so there's 3 layers in each cardboard box.

After a few days, when they're crunchy on the outside, I closed the boxes and wrapped them in plastic wrap, and taped up. sort of like @panhead does with the freezer bags to sweat the moisture out (I think?). I poke my finger through and squeezing some air out of the box to smell, I also stick my finger in to check the buds for moisture. If it's not crunchy, I open the box, but leave the plastic wrap taped to the box (making like a box jar). Once they no longer get moist on the outside again over time, i leave it wrapped in plastic, using tape to cover the test hole in the plastic.

It worked great.

I put em in a box like a moving box string line in top of the box then I add a damp rid in bottom of box and smash holes through entire box then hang buds and close box and have a fan blowing on oscillating about 4 metres from box around the room image.jpgDon't get the air freshener one lol there just plain ones about 2 bucks from a cheap shop

Thanks y'all for the advice. The dehumidifier was intriguing, and the "Ocean" fragrance might be a selling point. I went with the safe choice and cut the big kahuna into smaller nuggets. It would have been cool to walk around with a bud the size of my thigh and slice off bong hits like the prime rib guy at the local buffet, but I think I made the right move. And I'll tell you why.

I used surgical equipment and illuminated magnifying glasses. I tried to cut away the buds from the stem along where the leaves started. It was wet and juicy in there. Much of the "meat" was white, but has turned to a light green as it dries. I think if I would have tried to dry the whole bud, it would have been like trying to desiccate a melon. I would have had something growing there.

So, I have a bunch of nuggets instead of one big one. And there are sober people in Salt Lake City. My problem is better.

I have gotten mold with certain strains too, it's pretty much the worse. My understanding is the grey mold problem starts while growing, but will definitely get worse if it isn't caught. I dry with a small bath dehumidifier on a 12/12 cycle. My thought process is putting it on a cycle wicks the moisture away, then allows time for more water to be pulled from the stems.

My other advice in terms of ruining your stash would be to break your buds down more. Big 10" nugs look great in pics but it's not doing your stash any favors. That way at least if you come across a bud with mold on the inside, throw it away. It's not worth the risk.

Good luck.
