Have you ever wondered how 4/20, also known as “National Weed Day” or the “The Marijuana Holiday,” came to be? Look no further – we have all the answers you’ve been looking for.

Why April 20th?

Although many different stories about the origin of the holiday are in circulation, the most credible story stems from a group of high school students in the 1970s. Rumor has it that a group of Californian teenagers practiced a ritual of smoking marijuana every single day at 4:20 pm. Their daily practice caught wind, and soon “420” became slang for smoking marijuana. In time, 4:20 pm was converted into April 20th, and the holiday was born.

Another common belief of the origin of the holiday is that 420 was the California police’s penal code for marijuana; however, there is no credible evidence to support the story. Either way, as marijuana legalization spreads in the modern-day, so does the holiday. 4/20 has become more of a mainstream celebration (increasingly seen in the media over the last 40 years) than a counterculture event.
