Do NOT Buy Equipment From Yescom USA!!!

Okay, here is a nightmare experience I would like to share with you all in order to help prevent any one else from having a similar experience.

Check it out, yo. I finally got the thumbs up from my wife to go ahead and build a small grow room. Yay! After much research I decided on a 600 w HPS/MH system with an air cooled hood and a digital ballast. I searched around on Ebay and found the exact setup I desired at a price I could manage. It was, as I am sure you can surmise, from Yescom USA. I researched their web site and they seemed like a legitimate, if not low budget company and they had accumulated a decent seller rating, so I felt okay abut giving them my money.

About a week later the boxes arrived. Yay!! I put the hood together and pulled out the MH bulb. First sign of trouble: the bulb had some small glass nuggets rolling around in it. Second sign of trouble: I tried both bulbs and the ballast did not work. On the first bulb it flashed for a moment and went dead. I consulted with Yescom and they blamed a faulty fuse and agreed to send me another one. I spent two days searching my city for one, but it is an unusual size and I could not find any in the 10 different radio shacks and electronics repair shops I visited. I took this as a warning sign. Finally, a packet with a replacement fuse and a new MH bulb arrived. Grateful for the bulb, but the fuse was the wrong size, about 1/4 too long and the wrong amperage and voltage. I contacted the company and informed them if this mistake and asked that they priority ship one to me. They agreed and 3 days later the correct fuses arrived. Guess what? The ballast blew both of them with a feeble flash each time. I contacted Yescom and inquired about returning the ballast for an exchange. They told me to keep the faulty ballast, they would send me a new one. Second warning sign- they obviously do not spend a lot of money on their products if they are willing to throw it away rather than pay $10 shipping. They sent me a new ballast, but it took @ WEEKS to arrive, while my seedlings continued to languish under cfls and getting more and more cramped in their tiny pots :(

Finally, the replacement ballast arrived. See the pics below for the condition it was in when I opened the box. At least it worked...

I contacted Yescom and asked for a partial refund for the month-long ordeal I went through, only to end up with a banged up ballast that frankly I am uncertain about using in a humid environment. They emailed me back today and offered me a $20 refund, which is probably exactly what this ballast is worth. Fuckers.

Morale to this story? Save your money and buy decent shit from well known and reputable companies. It will be worth it in the long run.

Hey Sutra,
I don't think I'm over reacting, but if you count repeated negative experiences, long delays in responses, and time spent waiting to receive wrong and repeatedly damaged equipment as "good customer service", I'd hate to see what you consider bad service.

you just got screwed... check Craigslist for some 400w bay lights and google how to diy them to be remote. throw that silver lumatek away tons of radio frequency interference and it will die soon. always buy from reputable dealers(online or offline) or go see product yourself such as craigslist(just search grow)

I know it sucks but you get what you pay for. I got cheep eBay stuff to but most of it worked. A few complaints but for the most part I knew I was paying way less for what I needed so wasn't expecting much. So far the only thing I'm sill useing is 3 ballest. Everything eles has been changed but set aside for backups. Now I pay for worrentys not price. But it's a learning thing.

He got sent a faulty ballast/bulb , then they sent the wrong fuses , then the right fuses that still didnt work , then they told him to keep the shitty ballast rather than pay postage and then took weeks to send him another 1 that is obviously used in some way and you think this is good customer service ?
wow.
To the Op, I have never lived anywhere that was so remote i could not visit the shop i would be ordering from , keep them in range and issues like this are easy sorted , i know sometimes peoples prices can be better , but as you have learned it counts for nothing ,
better luck with the rest of your grow umbre ....

I am wondering if Yescom repackages equipment confiscated by LEO. That damaged ballast looks like uniforms with crowbars. I would stay oh so very away. cn

He's a top rated seller. That's not so easy to get and keep on ebay if you're a crappy seller. I'm sure they're dealing with numerous people. I would just return everything and get a refund. You already attempted an exchange. They state 30 days refund, buyer pays return shipping. So pay return shipping, get the refund, and go elsewhere. Not necessarily in that order.

They have to re-imburse your original shipping per ebay/paypal policy. Communicate through paypal to get their attention. If you take a partial refund, that could effect the outcome if you have to file a complaint. You can't blame a seller for trying to resolve by offering $20. Tell them, "No, I'm returning it for a full refund, thanks anyway." This is ebay, not a yard sale.

It gets really bad at times in Cali with customer service. Most of the people you end up talking to dont even know jack about their own product hehe.

If it was in any way illegal to buy grow equipment, why would everyone be selling it? Were you kidding or what? To me, it's like you were buying a TV or Stereo. Go get your refund without worry.

Either I missed it or you haven't said how much you spent... Try HTGSupply.com. They have great prices and they mail out. I don't trust ebay for electronics.

Not kidding ... cops confiscate much grow equipment. Unlike with weapons, I doubt there is an obligation to destroy the grow hardware. I would be not one bit surprised if some enterprising soul bought them from Impound for cheap and resold. Not a question of legality in my mind so much as simple opportunism. I don't know if this is the case here, but so far it can fit. cn

Agreed but what a vicious circle ,
shops are allowed to sell grow gear and seeds,
it's illegal for us to grow the plant,
so the Police collect it all and sell it back to them ?
how very democratic!

I'm sure they do confiscate grow equipment. But it would have to be being used for illegal purposes. I wouldn't think they confiscate mail items with nothing illegal in the package? I've been wrong before though.

Well, to be fair, if the ballast is nuking fuses why would they want it back? Lots of manufacturers of products don't want it back. I think you just came in contact with a guy on ebay who sells cheapo chinese ballasts. I'd personally just send the shit back and demand a refund.

Let me help you out since you are clearly a new grower. You need to take this hobby seriously even though it's not that serious if that makes sense. You are GOING to lose your first crop (probably potentially valued around $2500) if you buy all cheap equipment. Something will fail, something will break and you'll be shit out of luck.

Here's the list of shit that you ARE going to buy that's too cheap and will cost you $2500.00 because you cheaped out when you shouldn't have...

Fan
Timer
Pumps (if in hydro)
Soil (if in soil)
Lights
Tent/Growspace
Nutrients (although you can do this on the cheap with some education)
Meters

You get the idea. You cheap out on them and they bite you in the ass.
A fan that stops in the middle of the grow = dead plants.
Pumps that stop working and you don't catch it = dead plants.
Timers that fail = stressed plants/potential problems Timers that are underrated = burned down house or dead plants
Ballast that causes radio interfernce = everybody knows what you're doing
Ballast that fails = stress to plants/loss of production
Meters that don't read reliably = hopeless chances of success and loads of problems
Cheap ebay tent that won't light seal = hermies
Tent with failing zippers and crappy construction = light seal problems and the use of plastics for supports. History of off-gassing problems killing plants (although I haven't actually seen this in a couple of years)

Buy the good shit. Do your research for yourself. Don't listen to the guy at the hydro store or what your friends tell you. You've done yourself a great service by finding a very active forum where you can observe a lot of growing "traffic". Read grow journals, see what people are using and how effective it has been in actual use. If you buy the good shit (not always the most expensive or most marketed shit), this hobby will pay you back with years of problem free growing. Cutting corners and cheaping out will lead you down a path of expensive lessons.

It's expensive to get started, but it saves $$$ down the road.
