DIY Microscope Modification for Phone / Ipad ( Easy Cheap )

This was created in very little time and with items I already had on hand. There are similar devices made for various phones and tablets that "CLIP ON " and magnify small things , but at a higher cost.

SUPER CHEAP AND THIS WORKS :shock:

Use this simple DIY project to fine tune your final results.

Items needed :

Phone with camera ( I used a Samsung S3 but most phones will work )
Or IPAD or similar device.

Rubber Bands
Jewelers Loupe (30x or 60x recommended )

Optional :
For IOS system - CAMERA ZOOM APP. ( .99 at App Store )
Android : Look for similar app that allows extended zooming.

Note : although APPS claim zooming beyond what your device does , it does this thru software.
It digitally recreates an optical zoom , with algorithms to increase range. Your pictures may look a bit grainy but you can find a happy medium by adjusting how much zoom effect you apply and the loupe attached to device. EXPERIMENT !


As ridiculously easy as these steps are , you CAN get very close microscopic ( macro ) shots.

Step 1. Attached loupe over your devices lens ( using rubber bands )
Be sure to not allow bands to cover flash or rest on side buttons.

Note : most loupes have difference in clearance (bottom side vs. Top side ) due to its construction.
You will be able to try either side to see if there is an optimal advantage. Experiment !

Step 2 : launch your camera APP

Step 3 : Do some test shots by adjusting auto focus ( tap screen ) compared to using a slight pinch and zoom with your fingers. Try to find a balance that will give you the best shot without directly adding the camera app ( and it's grainy processing ).

The trick to good shots is a steady hand and light ( either from the camera flash or other source.

Tips : this tutorial is based on what I built using a 10x loupe. Higher power is recommended.
Take photos WITHOUT grow lights on .
Using IPAD , you can attach a clip on book light ( led ) to your tablet edge to light up the shot.

It works and is cheap.

You are the man!!! Just remember to have the GPS locator turned off if you take pix. Also, make sure you're not sharing pix with facebook, twitter or other social media sites that have access to your pix without you "sharing" them with them.

That is awesome I did the same thing but didn't use a rubber band that is freaking genius
