DIY Ebb & Flow - Some questions and some pics!

I am currently constructing an ebb and flow system, and so far everything is great. I've got the controller bucket all finished and the lines made and tapped into the 5 gallon sites. Everything works prefect!

Currently the last detail is the interior buckets in which the medium will reside. My roomie purchased some 10 inch net pot lids [fig 1] for this purpose, but my concern is that they are not deep enough - they only go about halfway down into the 5 gallon bucket. Will this cause the roots to air prune and keep the roots in the hydroton as I fear or will the roots dangle down into the reservoir and be fine (provided I add some additional bubble action)?

I think we're going to need to just get some more 5 gallon buckets and do some modifications to them, but I figured I would ask the pros, as this type of system has been built hundreds of times.
Also I've seen some pre-built systems that include a part like this [fig 2] , any ideas where I can find them if they would be a better option?

TLDR - what should I stick in my 5 gallon buckets?

I'll be posting some pictures of my setup and progress as we get it wrapped up, too. We currently have some really nice plants in coco vegging under some LEDs right now, which we will be planting into this system once it's ready.
