Distracting Animals

So I was just sitting here thinking of the up coming season, and had a crazy thought. To distract deer and other animals from your plants, couldn't you use well placed salt licks? You know the big bricks of salt. Would that be a cheap and relatively efficient means of distracting animals from attacking young plants? Anyone heard of anyone using this method? Any thoughts bro's?

Not the greatest idea. Once they realize the salt lick is there, they will keep coming back and roaming around looking for more food. Its just asking for more problems, the salt lick literally just gives them a taste of food, once they realize that its just a taste, they will start searching for more food, they wont just lick the salt till you crop.

Your much better off surrounding your babies with some plants that the animals in your area will not eat and avoid.

Deer do not go to salt licks every day. They will only go to salt licks when they need the salt and minerals.
To deter deer from your plants,go buy a spool of cheap fishing line and run it around trees or plants near your grow.Put it at two or three different hieghts.
If you have to,find some strong dead branches and stick them in the ground around the plants. This has worked for me in the past.Once your plants get some size to them you can remove the fishing line.Deer might test a leaf or two but will leave your plants alone after that.OPH

Well, hell Yeah. Good concept. Rule of thumb, when animals get hungry enough, they will eat shit they don't even like, to save their life;, like plants absorbing chemical ferts; people eating people, or cows eating cactus. If they are desperate enough, nothing is safe. Even Law Dogs will halt a hot pursuit for stale Donuts tossed out of my truck....
Maybe plant some dank shit, as opposed to some whimpy shit, that helps. A salt & mineral block will help. A large bag of bird seed & dried peas & beans from the local Grocery store would do better. Watch the radar in the Spring. An hour before a good rain, throw that shit out, 1/4 mile from your spot. In 4 to 6 days, you got something. Spread Blood meal around your plants, Deer don't like blood. Just a thought.

Dont feed them.....bringing bait will make it worse, when the good food is gone they try the plants.

Dont put bird seed or a salt lick!!

Animals are not dumb, they will not eat poison plants, find something that the animals wont eat and put it around your plants.

Also try Citronella, it may be harder to maintain depending on your environment, but the best thing to do is to use poison plants that grow naturally in your area.

If your really lazy, the absolutely EASIEST solution is to just PISS. Piss Everywhere around your plants, Piss a circle around them. Dont piss On them, but create a perimeter.

If you have a dog, get your dog to piss in the area, Mark your territory and the animals will stay away. The easiest thing to do is use their natural instincts against them.

Pissing does not work either, human or dog.It will wash away after the first rain.I have tried it,my four dogs have helped, they become use to the smell and it will not deter them.OPH

Yes it does wash away, you have to do it quite often. Every time your out there.

It does work if you keep up a perimeter.

But like I said, use poison plants from your area.

Also whoever mentioned blood....deer dont like blood because Bears do. I wouldnt want bears around my crops, or any other predatory animal.

And these are all solutions if you cant do the most obvious thing, and that would be to just put up some type of fence.

Soaking twine or rope in something to repel the animals works, use something with a really strong odor and set it at 2 or 3 levels.
(I forget what that shit they use on Horse pen fences is)

Wow, bro's really great ideas. You are all seeming to have the same idea: Don't bait them! I figure since there was a large population of deer in my area a salt lick would just draw attention from my girls. As far as fences... not really an option. I liked the fishing line idea that OPH mentioned sounded pretty solid of an idea. The reason I am worried about deer is because my grow location is in a corn field. Not a sweet corn field, but a field corn field. Therefore, the girls can reach full maturity and my curing and drying locations are right down the road in a friendly barn.(back country of barn on a lonely road) I've done research, there is no fly-overs by local authorities. However the Local CAP (Civil Air Patrol) is responsible for flyovers. But, with recent tax cuts the squadron lost their funding, and are unable to leave the ground and now just perform search and rescue. Anyone have experience in this area of "guerrilla growing" that could lend a knowledgeable hand?

2 ozs. of piss per gal. is good for your plants, and will give deer a cause for caution. A deer will not cross laid-down fence, any area that they can't jump into safety. I wouldn't take much in the no fly over shit. The bust makes too much money, houses, land, boats, your computer, etc. Blood Meal, dog scent, piss & used tampons.

string some line and attach cowbells to them .. When the animals strike the line the cowbell will rattle and scare em off

A Bear !!!! Fuck that. Cops are bad enough.... Just put poisons out, kill lots of shit. Smoke the shit. Nome's & Troll's may be a problem.... the issue of bears was never mentioned.

Do a little research, find out what poison plants grow locally (poison Ivy) And surround your plants with it, or plant where there already is some. Animals won't eat poison plants.

That or get some string, and soak the string in something that stinks, like bear mace. And string it up around your plants around waste-chest level.

Thank you all for your responses. Now at least I know not to use salt licks. I never thought about fishing line, or planting poisonous plants. Thanks for the input.
