Decarbing 2.5 month old bud

Damn near impossible to find the answer. All the info is about decarbing fresh.

What ive read FROM ONE SOURCE, The bud will naturally decarb over the course of 3-4 months when properly dried and cured. I used goog to find backup "proof" and nothing.

So what the hells the deal? if its half way to "natural decarbing" should I bake it for half the time? That seems like the logical thing to do, but like I said. No real answers out there.

And is this time frame for natural decarbing legit? I would love to make some edibles without the terpins baked away. I am just stuck in this mid area and will need to cook up a batch of butter soon.

No guessing, that's what I am doing, But if you really know fill us in. Thanks

This is how I do it BudNug...I decarb for 20 mins at 220f for older stuff (the stock I am currently using is a year old and gets 20 mins) For fresher material - less than a year old - I would do 30 minutes. @skepler can maybe post his graph for you on times and temps. There is a whole range of them (times and temps) to get different effects from your material. Hope that helps some.

I have some shatter I made last summer with some year-old material, 2013 outdoor harvest. It still takes 25 minutes or so at 250° to decarb. I have some three year old RSO that was never decarbed. I intend to decarb the last seven grams with some coconut oil because someone wants pictures of decarbing. (Won't mention any names)

You will notice the hottest decarb yields the highest THC%, because that allows the least time to break down the THC that was decarbed from THCA. The longer the decarbing goes on, the more the THC breaks down. Roughly 20% of THC in a plant is already decarbed or straight THC, that would be the 3% on the y-axis. The remaining 80% of the THC is in the THCA form and needs decarbing to get through the brain-blood barrier. As the decarbing is going on, THC is breaking down into CBN (I think), so one wants to minimize the length of the decarbing. Notice the lower decarbing temperatures cannot produce the higher levels of THC that one gets with a higher temperature decarbing. Trying for a 293° decarb is not practical, as pretty heavy out-gassing is occurring by 240°, and a fair amount if time can pass waiting to get to temperature, so you won't get to use the time on the chart.

Weed will naturally decarb In about 4 months. Try googling sciency sounding terms; thca half life etc. (Which is 35 days or a tad longer at 26°c, or standard room temp in normal environment say your kitchen counter for the dude with that rso)
There are so many variables the half life can be drastically different.
If your ever unsure of the current state, as always the best method is to watch it decarb visually. You can quite literally watch it decarb. This is what should be done every time and is the reason most edibles are sedating

Ummm I didn't open the picture but based on the context I will assume that's the Russian graph your speaking of . Yeaaa its already been deemed innacurate many times (also with questionable sources), even our own fade who popularized it has acknowledged. Though this is fundamental chemistry. The lower the heat used the better.

Have stated when decarbed at 500(your lighter) 50% or so makes it as intact thc when decarbed at 210 70% makes it..when decarbed at 170 something like 81% when decarbed without heat its in the high 80's...at that point light and air oxidation will play a factor and limit you, also decarbing will never give a 100% return as the cooh group is missing..
thca converts to active thc now a smaller molecule, the rest is degraded to delta 8 and to a lesser extent some cbn is formed...cbn starts to rapidly form just over 400°f

Skepler - how do you have nondecarbed RSO? It's getting decarbed in the rice cooker???
I made it with a low temp reflux extraction. Never got over 130-140°. The alcohol was evaporating from a glass bowl in a steel container. As a final step I replaced the pot with another bowl to collect a fair amount of the alcohol, letting the bottom bowl end up with just oil.

Finally got around to decarbing the 3 year old RSO. While I call it RSO, it was a low temp reflux extraction, 7 gm. Mixed it with 7 gm lecithin prior to decarbing.

Sixteen minutes into decarbing, has a thick foam top, thought it might go over the top of the container. After decarbing, it all went into a batch of brownies. Managed to eat two over the course of the afternoon and evening.

Awesome Skeplar! so I don't have one of those burner plates, but I do have a cast iron skillet...could I use that the same way as your burner plate? And can I use a mason jar, or should I get the glass measuring cup?

You could use a skillet. I would recommend a Pyrex measuring cup, it will take heat better than a mason jar. Use just enough oil in the measuring cup to barely float the stainless container, or set it on three coins on the bottom of the glass measuring cup.

Thanks for the information, was unable to find anything through it. The first two go to a PubMed abstract with no information. The third asks that I join the AJFS, but it won't let me join. Do you have any other papers, information? TIA

So if i have really dry trim and popcorn buds from 2 years ago in gallon size ziplock bags is there a need to decarb for making coconut infused oil for edibles...dont want to risk baking it further because its so old...to bake or not to bake any advice

hey @foodie1982 :) I use trim/popcorn that is at least a year, sometimes two old. I still decarb. You don't have to if you don't want to, but if you want the full experience of your edibles, then yes, you should decarb it. Here is an example: you have two batches of cookies made exactly the same, except you decarbed one and not the other...you will 'feel' the decarbed one way more than the undecarbed. @skepler can attest to that ;)
