Just started My season today with my first three plants Cherokee Tomatoes, when I brought them they were in peat pots root bound, transfered them to slightly bigger pot with Bush Doctor Coco Loco Potting mix, worm castings, and Algamin Kelp meal. Got my Compost for these girls cooking for next month in 15 to 20 gallon containers with same but has azomite, gypsum, crab shell meal, happy frog marine cuisine. cherokee1.jpgcherokee2.jpg compost.jpg

Lookin good, my opinion, no tomato beats the taste of the Cherokee Purple tomatoes, and when you slice into them and look at the inside, now that's a real tomato.

Not sure on container tomatoes, I've always grown them directly in the ground. What I do is dig a 5 gallon or so sized hole and then amend the dirt with a little of whatever I have on hand that I source or make for free... some compost from my compost pile which is mainly leaves, grass and quite a few banana peels... and sometimes some coffee grounds and egg shells. Then they overgrow my 5ft or so tall stakes and grow back down them. I need to get mine in the ground like yesterday and I want to to find some taller stakes this year. Good support is my main problem with tomatoes!

The Cherokee Purples can have more problems and often don't produce as much as other types of tomatoes it seems like, but I've grown them ever since I first tried them 5-6 years ago, my favorite tomato.

Dude whats Mr stripey like and is it finicky and Dave whats Cherokee like?
The Cherokee Purple's just seem more prone to blossom end rot and blight. I've had a Cherokee Purple plant rotting after only getting a couple off of it and right next to it a mortgage lifter thriving like mad. The first time I grew them I only got a few tomatoes. Other times I've grown them and they've performed as well as anything else, don't give up.

Stripey's are my favorite right now....I have grown Princetons, Romas, Mortgage Lifters, Beefsteak II's and cherry toms over the last 3 or 4 years.....I was definitely looking forward to my seed this year....but I thinked I fucked up the "saving" part...:)

They get a little leggy for me, but I don't prune my plants much, just tie them to vertical screen After they outgrow a 3 ft tom cage :joint:

Fruits are pink with dark stripes, I usually get two sizes pretty consistently...Medium size about a tennis ball, early in the crop and then these flat pancake mini heirloom looking types, later in the year....still awesome either way....

I had two plants in a 2x2 and picked between 100-150 fruits total...The plants themselves spread out more than get tall and seem to tolerate heavy soils really well....Never Mushy even picking late

:peace:
