Hello RIU,

I'm trying to learn growroom design, and I'm struggling with how to manage temperature. Right now I'm trying to decide between running one big fan to manage stink and heat, or two smaller ones to handle them separately.

Goals:
Yield, ease of maintenance, quietness

Parameters:
68* ambient temp
4 plants
4x4x7 tent (possibly 5x5x7)
1000w HPS
2x 40gal DWC totes
S&P TD-Silent series fans. (TD-100xs / TD-150s / TD-200s)

Key:
RED- hot air
BLUE- cool air
DARK GREY- cooltube glass
ORANGE- light
CYAN- charcoal filter
GREEN- duh.

Option A: A single fan (probably TD-200s?) in an sound-insulated cabinet pulls hot air down from the ceiling of the tent, and through a carbon filter outside the cabinet.
A.jpg
Pros: Fewer parts, less loss of light through cooltube glass, one big fan seems like it would be quieter than two smaller fans.
Cons: Static pressure of carbon filter may be too high for fan to run efficiently, air coming off bulb may be too hot for fan.

Option B: One fan in a cabinet pushes air through the cooltube, a second bungied to the ceiling of the tent pulls hot air through a carbon filter, and out of the tent.
B.jpg
Pros: More controllable, a hole cut in the lamp cooling system (before the lamp) could act as an active intake.
Cons: More crowding inside tent. More parts.

Option C: Similar to B, but with both fans inside tent.
C.jpg
Pros: No need for cabinet.
Cons: Tent could get really crowded.

I'm leaning toward one of the latter two, for the sake of control. Cost isn't a huge issue.

The big questions: Which fans should I buy for a given system?

If you are wanting to dial in your system, It'd be easier to do so with your second or third option. This enables you to slow down or increase the cycling of air in your tent to adjust temp without sacrificing airflow through the cooltube. If you're going for budget, go with your first option.
In case you've not considered this, you should know that pulling the air from your tent will most likely pull the sides of your tent in and crowd your plants, for this reason, it helps to both push and pull, or push rather than pull the air in your tent to cool it, but that can be a matter of preference. Also, as for scrubbing your air, look at filters with higher CFM ratings than your fan, so that it will no place an excessive load on your fan or reduce it's efficiency. Hope this helps, good luck.
