CREE 3590 bulk order?

Yes, mine are CD bin, which is the 13,320 lumen. Actually 13,320 is at 1200mA. Since the Meanwell is driving the chip
at 1400mA it's output is closer to 15,000 lumen.

Wow those are some rare chips! Here is how the CXA3590 CD bin (top bin) compares to the only 5000K CXA3070 bin currently available Z4 (lowest bin).

If you are going for efficiency, at 350mA they are 58.7% efficient! If you are going for brute force, at 1.4A they put out 14640 lumens minimum and dissipate 112W at 40.4% efficiency.

The trouble is, what reasonably priced drivers do we have that can drive these? 69vF at 350mA, 80vF at 1.4A.

I'm using the Meanwell HLG-120H-C. I think I paid $65 from Jameco.

Interesting, this ties out pretty well with Cree's Product Characterization Tool. I wanted to use 1700mA, but I could not find a suitable driver. Any ideas?

It would be cool to blast out 16,500 lumens. Here is a screenshot of the PCT:

I've been looking at CREE's new additions to its CXA line, and they are only offered in quantities of 100 at this point.. $50-60 per chip that's like 5-6k. I don't know about you all, but I can't put to use 100 chips especially at that price. Have y'all ever done a group order to split up large minimum orders?
I am wondering about quality of light now over quantity. I was looking at the datasheet for the 3590 and noticed they have a 95 CRI 2700k in the Z2 performance group!! That is huge!

I also found a 900mA driver on alibaba that would be perfect to run the LAMP for one per plant :)

The CD 5000K that I have seem ideal for veg growth. I definitely want to get my hands on a couple of Z2 chips as well for the red spectrum. If you end up buying some, I would be interested in at least two of them. Should be able to get 10,000 lumens of good red spectrum out of a Z2:

Medicine- I don't know why I didn't Ebay search for these. Dumb move. Thanks for the link! Now only if somebody would order those 2700K Z2's


Canna- I agree those seem to be pretty much spot on for running at 900 ma. 85% efficiency isn't so bad either.


Supra- 58.7%?! Too bad that means they are only putting out 23.1 watts at 350 ma. That'd be one super expensive light, one can dream though right?

Efficiency is a noble goal but it takes a long time to make up the initial expenditure at ten to fifteen cents per kWh. Meanwhile, the elves at Cree and Bridgelux are working very hard to bring us even more efficient emitters. At the same time, prices are dropping. So it's a balance unless you are off grid or especially sensitive to heat. IMHO, if you're not going to break even within 3 years you should go for fewer emitters driven harder. In 3-5 years you'll be able to get new emitters for your existing drivers that are much more efficient and half the price or less. Furthermore, with legalization sweeping the nation you can bet that those cheaper, more efficient emitters will be available with grow optimized spectra.

Assuming you got them for the $57 retail price, at 350mA they cost $2.38/W which isn't bad, but at 700mA it is 51% efficient and only $1.12/W which is right in line with how I run the CXA3070 @900mA which cost $1.03/W. So 700mA seems like a decent value point.

It is true that it would take a long time to recover the initial cost of higher efficiency if you look at electrical savings alone but there is more to consider. When you run at higher efficiency you need less watts to do the same job, so that means you need less heatsink and drivers to do the same job. It also might mean running less AC during the hot season and less fan to to vent/filter the air. Another advantage is that you use more emitters so you get a better spread and can get closer to the canopy. All that said, this COB rocks at 350mA or 1400mA :joint:
