lol same thing i said, the grinder looks kick ass, that was my inspiration to do the FAQ, considered doing it on a homemade hydro setup but considering my limited hydro knowledge, i didnt wanna make myself the laughing stock of the site just yet, lol so I only spoke on a topic that i know, Im still learning as i go and im loving it, this is a great site to learn everythign about growing, the only drawback to the site...a few people who shall remain nameless seem to only wanna put people down for asking question or making a rookie mistake...we all gotta learn somehow :-)

Thanks EatSpam. I've got a rockwool grow going (5 plants) and 5 plants in soil (another experiment) and I'm totally out of room in my grow cabinet. The blueberry in the soil is doing so well that I don't want to do anything to disrupt their progress. I'll try and figure something out very shortly to get another place to start this system. I need to get a grow journal going for my soil grow; looks like they may be overtaking most of my RW plants! Blueberry rockin' the Big Bud, LOL.

this is an essay I wrote on the extreme basics of hydroponics I wrote this for a horticultural class I'm taking. It basicaly just explains what a hydroponic system is, a tinny bit of history, and alittle about how they work.

Hydroponics chambers are a fairly new method for growing plants, there usually used for growing vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, lettuces, and somehow even potatoes and carrots. Hydroponics has been around for about 50 years, but hasn’t become widely used until recently because there were still a lot of problems. Hydroponics has come a long way in its relatively short existence, and have been available to the public more recently, hundreds of people start hydroponics gardens each week. With hydroponics water is the only thing that is used to give plants nutrients, they are soilless setups. Hydroponics nutrients need to be added to the water. The reason these nutrients need to be added is because water has little, if any minerals and nutrients that a plant needs to survive. There are hundreds of different brands of nutrients but they all have the same basic components which are Nitrogen or N, phosphate or P2O5, and potash or K20, each company uses different amount of each chemical, than they add there own extra chemicals in minute amounts.
Hydroponics nutrients come in either two or three parts. One is the nutrients that plants need during their vegetative growth period, plants that are “veging” like a nutrient mix of about 1:3:6, that means 1 part Nitrogen 4 parts Phosphates and 7 part potash, this is the order nutrients are labeled on packages N:P:K. The vegetative stage of a plant is when the plant is focusing all its energy on growing new leaves and flower sights, as well as growing both up and out. During this vegetative growth some people put their plants under 24 hours of light or 16/8 14/10 or 18/4 (light On/Off), the reason for this is that most plants don’t require time to rest or “sleep” until they begin to flower.
During the flowering stage of a plants life they like a mixture of about 1:4:7. This might not seem like a big difference from the 1:3:6 plants like during vegetative growth. But apparently it is.
The third part of the nutrient solution is a growth booster that is a ratio of about 3:0:2 this isn’t necessary but useful.
The plants also need to stand upright, which is not possible in water, so to keep the plants upright a grow medium is needed, there are many different grow mediums a few are Hydroton also called expanded clay pellets, lava rocks, and rock-wool, each one is very porous and also allows a sufficient amount of air to reach the roots. A new medium that is rapidly becoming very popular is called coco-fiber, it’s the hairs from the outside of a coconut, its bin said that they have natural oils that help roots grow more rapidly.
There are dozens of different types of Hydroponics systems these are a few that are popular because they can be used in small scale grows and large scale grows, and also because they’re relatively easy to use.
Deep Water Culture or DWC- with a DWC system the roots of the plant are completely submerged in nutrient rich water. Because plants roots need lots of air as well as water in the bottom of one of these chambers are air stones that are hooked up to air pumps (the same ones used for fish tanks). This gives the plant the air and water that it needs to live a happy life.
Aeroponic chamber- they are becoming incredibly popular because they are said to be a low maintenance hydroponics systems.
Aeroponic setups have a water pump inside of them (same ones used for fish tanks) that pumps water through misters. Most people have these misters spray the roots 24 hours a day. Since the roots are just being sprayed they receive much more air than other kinds of hydroponic systems, while still getting as much nutrient rich water, and this makes the plants grow at a much faster rate.
Ebb and Flow- These systems are pretty different from the other two, in that the other systems can house their own reservoirs, Ebb and Flow system must have an external reservoir, a table with deep sides, is filled with Hydroton and in this lose hydroton plants can be placed pretty much anywhere on the table.
The table need to sit above its reservoir, because the reservoir hold all the water for the table, and 3 times a day a pump, pumps water into the table for an hour, watering the roots and than all the water empties out into the reservoir, acting kind of like the Ebb and Flow of the ocean.
A few other hydroponics systems that I wont get into because I don’t know much about them are drip irrigation, Nutrient film transfer NFT, and others I cant thing of.

Supplies needed ....
1. 1, roll of silage wrap(black and white), 1 roll clear thick
2. 1, 4' x 8' sheet of plywood
3. 4, 5/8" x 4" x 8' deck boards
4. 12, 2" x 2" x 8'
5. 10, 2"x4" x12"
6. 1, 80 liter resorvoir(rubber maid barbage can)
7. 1 utility pump
8. 8 feet of garden hose
9. 1 watering wand
10. 2 bails of professional growers mix
11. 2, 120 volt 1000watt HPS
12. 1, 4" dc fan
13. 1 pail of 30-10-10, 1 pail of 15-52-15
14. 1 ph test kit or electronic ph meter
15. 1 plumbers torch
16. 2 air pumps with stones
17. 50 clones
18. 12 feet of small dog chain
19. Deck screws
20. 1 germicidal lamp
21. 1 Intermatic 24hr timer

Explanation...

Take the plywood and the 4x 5/8 x 8' deck boards and attach the deck boards vertically to the plywood, so to make sides. Once this is complete, take the 10 2x4 x 12" and attach to the corners and middle of the plywood to make legs. Take the 2x2x8', cut to six feet tall for four corners, and stand vertically at the corners. So you have a poster bed. Then, take 2, 2x2x8 and run horizontally along sides, and 2x2x4' for the ends. So know you have a box, 2 feet from either end, you need to run some cross members to attach your lights(or you can get a track and run one light). Once your room is framed, you will want to hang the track or two lights, with the two lights space em two feet from ends and they will be two feet from each other.

Now I am going to let you in on a secret and the reason I only run 120volt. Instead of running my lights vertically, I run them horizontally.(by doing this, you gain 40% more lumens from the bulb and you can get the lights inches from plants)

To do this, use any electrical junction box, or if you are a metal guy make a box to hold your tungsten receptical with a screw at the top to attach one side of your chain. Make a 15" x 4" x 3/16" metal plate, drill two holes at the ends and four holes along the side, take two pieces of metal flashing, 24" x 15" and if you can put on metal brake and crimp every 1.5 " so it looks like bat wings when you are done. Screw one to either side of the metal plate which you attached to the electrical junction box. Use small machine screws and nuts to attach. This will give you a sideways mount and shades..attach the other end of your chain to the end of the plate and you are ready to hang the light. Hang the 4" fan from the ceiling half ways down with chain.

Once you have installed the lights, take the clear poly you got and line the inside of the box. Then take the two bails of professional growers mix and fill the box, level it out.
Take the fifty clones and plant 10 rows long of five wide, space them evenly out.( i get sixty clones from two mothers and they are only 2.5 ft tall on a 250 watt light)

Take the silage wrap, black and white poly and cover the whole structure. Of course the white side is inward for reflection and make it neat so you now have a self contained room within a room.

Fill the resorvoir with water, throw some air stones in there for oxygen enrichment and mix 3 tablespoons of 30-10-10 for 80 litres(DO NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON ANY OF THOSE FOOD CONTAINERS)(use half of what they say) and mix it all up, ph the water(food adversely affects ph so, when adding food with lots of nitrogen will cause ph to drop) water them, don't give them the whole 80 litres, right away, space it out over the night. Sunday start with food, thursday give water, sunday start with food, thursday give water....follow. Hook up the utility pump to the garden hose watering rig and plug it in. Feed them 30-10-10 for five weeks and then 15-52-15 for 4 weeks and straight water for one week. Make sure your ph is between 6.0 and 6.3 strict regemental. If you can get a tri meter, tells ph, tds and temp. Tds should be around 300 ppm, with 6.3.

Every three hours, take the plumbers torch and light it, burn for two minutes inside room. Do this every day, always...you are feeding them co2 and they will accelerate greatly.

Set timer for 18 x 6 hours for one week maximum. Turn timer to 12 x 12 after one week and run for 8 - 9 weeks. You wanna grow em fat not tall here with my application.

Depending on the strain..ie sativas tend to be sooner, indica tends to be later. There are only three kinds of marijuana, regardless of how many names ya wanna call it, there's sativa, indica and ruderelis. I like to grow sativas cause of smell issues, although thats what the germicidal lamp is for but DO NOT put that lamp directly in the room put it somewher in the house and on a timer for like 1 min per hour.

If you follow these directions, you will have four pounds of good pot with very little effort and small space. The best part of this is NO LEAKS, No heat issues, No damage to the environment of the home and No venting required.

My room stays constant at 80 degrees a slight drop to 70 when lights off. It is very important that you don't go over 80 and under 60. Humidifier or dehumidifier is also not required.

Just so you guys know, this is how the new style faq will look.

The general layout is just there as a guide.

The current faq was all of overgrows old stuff, which was just shoved onto our site by the previous person assigned with the task of improving rollitups faq.

Rollitup.org is really hoping to get all the work on the new faq to be done by current members and for it to all be rollitup.

How cool would it be for a newbie, to look through the faqs and then actually see that member online here.

A member that used to come here called mogie was the queen of cut n paste, she took all that info and then put it on there.

I'd say around 65% of it is stolen.

This new faq project has been around for some time now. There was even a group assigned to work on it.

When it came to the crunch of doing the work however only one person remained to do it, he put the new faq in the order it is in today and then thought if i do all this myself its not going to be a rollitup faq its going to be a nongreenthumb faq.

This new faq has to be written by us all, only by doing this can we be sure of getting the best faq and not just a few peoples views.
