Then the roots would rot in the bottom of a SIPS setup. I think the key is not to let standing water remain for too long.
Lol. It's what the roots are coming out of. ;-). There is a 5gl 8" netpot that I extended with other net pots that sticks out the bottom of that soft pot. The build pics are in my thread so I'll have to dig up the pic.

Dude. This is up your alley. Lol. It's like a organic soil and dwc hydro mixed. Growth is nuts.

I was adding cal mag to my water only grow for weeks ( in soil , non sip) and not ph ing the water,,
is liquid cal mag to be nutes,,, are they?,, hahaha,,,
I should mix up a gallon of water with the cal mag and see if it changes the ph any at all,,, because if there is no ph change, then its safe to ad to the res, then again nobody says what thier " water only" ph is,, mine comes out of the faucet right at 6.4 ph,, i h ave hear some people say thier city water is ph 8
I am all for mixing the lime in the soil for mag , do lime also ad cal?
not sure what some guy is using for natural soil amends for cal mag?

If you read the "guaranteed analysis" of the dry time release Happy Frog Fruit and Flower that we both use, it does contain some of both calcium (7.8%) and magnesium (.85%) -- I think that's all he's saying, is that most dry nutes have some.

True, but we both know from our last 2 grows, that using our COB DIY lights the plants are super hungry for additional cal mag beyond what is in the happy frog, hence we were adding lime to the soil plus cal mag liquid to our waterings ,, so my question is this
if the cal mag present in the dry ferts wasnt enough, is there a differant "dry" type cal mag to add to the soil?,,, or like you said in the private message you sent me,,, should we just top feed some liquid cal mag?,,, I would prefer to have everything in the soil and just add water to the res the whole ride

And I bet it's damn near hassle free, too. THAT'S what I'm going for. RDWC is just too fuckin' finicky for me anymore. I got better things to do than babysit my nutrient solution- or keep throwing stupid money at it trying to automate it.

You are right, and that is a major concern of mine so I too am curious how other LED/COB users are supplementing cal-mag in SIPs. I expect at some point I'll need to top water, hopefully not too often.

SIPS are the perfect solution to me,, super simple, we get the good benefits of organic soil,, and toss in the hydroponic type growth
its the HOLY GRAIL

I think this is what has drawn a lot of us to this method. It seems to be the best of soil and the best of hydro without the hassles. ... beat me to it Tim.

Next morning... most of the new growth has turned around after being forced under the scrog.

Do y'all think I can go two weeks to let the roots hit the res, or am I going to need to flip this sooner?

And here's a shot of the root-bound roots, that's the BB#3 as I was transplanting. I don't recall ever finding a plant that root bound when transplanting. When I've cloned BB#3, it will pop roots in a matter of days. One clone I took from this plant outgrew my clone tray hood in 4 days!

Flip NOW, that screen is full!

Nice roots, too!

Thanks, that's all Mr. Banner.

I suppose if its a week or two into flower when the roots fully hit the res, I'll still get a substantial benefit from it...(?)

Truth is, I'm going to run out of vertical space. I'll need to train them deep into the stretch. So, I know you are right, I guess I wish I had timed it better and they went into the SIPs 3 weeks ago... Oh well, next time.

When the lights come on at 6pm (currently on 6pm to noon the next day) I'll switch the timer to 10pm-10am. So tomorrow they'll start their new schedule.

Yes. Flip man! Holy cow. I'm looking at being over grown myself I'm thinking. Lol
That's what I love about this place, I need my reality checked frequently. I think I'm re-calibrated now. I may not react swiftly, but periodically reality hits me and I adjust accordingly. ;)

I did the first under-the-scrog trim this morning. I'll let the plants stretch a bit and then see what else it needs.

This is the Chemdawg OG x Rug Burn OG, and I planted it off center in its bin because the BB#3 is a much wider plant, so its going to get more than 1/2 the tent. Also, the BB#3 is a known quantity, the OGx2 was something I picked up on a whim based on the recommendation of the guy at the dispensary (who I've come to respect).

The Bruce has had a great shape from the day I brought it home, it came with three strong branches right from the base (one is hidden directly behind another in this pic...). I'm really looking forward to seeing how it produces.
04.23_BB_undercarraige.jpg

The day that I transplanted these, I woke up in the morning, pulled four plants out of the tent, cut them to hang and dry (I do 70-90% of my trim wet, so that was a couple of hours), cleaned the tent, set up the sips for the first time, set up the double scrog, sprayed the girls (all organic) for bugs and fungi, and transplanted them under the scrog. It was a big day. At this point, I don't recall for sure which plant got the SIP with one big wick, and which one go the one with three smaller ones. I suppose it doesn't matter, but that's the kind of thing I'd usually remember.

I also decided to take the covers off to let the soil breath... and because they were really difficult to get in and out. If I decide to cover the soil down the road, I'll use a plastic bag.

Here's a quick pic of my 'nursery' for the summer outdoor grow. I suppose it's off topic, except... they are going under the big COB in the sky, some will be in SIPs outside... but this year I hope not to do any outdoor SCROGs. I did last year and it served its purpose (keeping the plants short, under the 6' fence and therefore legal), but I hope to achieve that with different methods this year.
04.23_nursery.jpg
That's some "mystery" seeds that were our best ones last summer, and some LSD from seeds. On the left are some clones from the plants in this run which are struggling (I think the batch of Happy Frog I have is too hot for them). And the one gallon has a J1 clone I picked up. Some will go in the ground, some in SIPs, two in 15 gallon pots I've dropped into the ground to keep the roots cool. Lots of experiments in the outdoor this year.

If things go as planned we'll be smoking the BB and OGx2 from the tent before the outdoor clones go into flower, so if we love either of them, I'll have the option to take more clones. We don't have that option most of the time, when we find something really good, its usually way past when I could take a clone.

You know,, when I was over visiting, i wanted to pay attention and see how your aquarium air pump and stone were hooked up, but I never even heard it running and I forgot to ask,, is your air pump really that quiet>? or was it not turned on?
