Club T5

Hey guys. Just startind reading into T5 and am considering making the switch as heat/electricity is really killing me. What would be a good set-up for a 5x5 veg room and 6x5 flower room?

Set-up wise I am planning on a modified stink bud aero system: 1 cloner, 3 veggers, and 3 flowering racks.

Any help is appreciated.

you would be better off going with leds for that space. For flower you would need like 3 8(or 6) bulb fixtures to just cover that 6x5. That would cost you at least 180 every time you needed bulbs.

Any reason why you would choose LED's? Would not the price be a lot higher?

I think I might use a 400w WH for the veg. in the 5x5 room.

something tells me aero grows too fast and t5s won't keep up with necessary light output for that fast growth. seen it in a pic not work so well.

Start up cost? Yes. Long term cost? No. Figure you buy 3 6 light t-5s for the flower room. That will cost you like 600+ just for the fixtures. Then you need to go out and buy different bulbs and replace those bulbs about every 4 grows. You can buy 2 led fixtures to cover that space for like 1200 and don't have to worry about buying bulbs. On top of that your electric bill will be lower and it will be easier to work around two lights than 3 fixtures that equal the same dimensions as your grow room.

Bump T5 Club. I began my journey right here learning from your posts. My T5s used only for veg now and flowering with 600w HPS Keep rocking it!!

People always ask me how I keep my plants so short with nodes so tight. It's because I started right here and learned early to keep those lights right down on top of my ladies. 2" being desired height for me with good airflow.
I'm waiting for my budget to allow me to switch to LEDs in my flower tent.

I hooked up with BML (led), who, in my opinion is going to be huge for mj growers who understand the spectrum requirements of mj. They have outstanding designs + you can choose your own spectrums.

I am anticipating 2 x 3ft supplemental rails this week, PLUS, they are making me a Spyder 600, but with a 2 ft spine for 2 x 4ft+ tents. As soon as that gets here it will replace my 8 bulb BadBoy t5

Shilling for LEDs in the "Club T5" thread? Whatever.

T5 are meant for growing shorter bushier plants or SOG or SCROG. The lamps don't penetrate like LED or HID. The light is spread out more evenly over a 2' x 4' area instead, assuming an 8 lamp 4 foot fixture. You could use side lighting to help grow taller plants, if you want, otherwise, keeping your plants short, topped several times, and well pruned is key to getting good yields using T5. Keep the lamp a few inches above the tops and raise the fixture as the tops grow into it. This keeps the tops of the buds elongating with enough light to keep the lower parts of the buds maturing and filling in.

As far as the number and type of fixtures, it's all relevant to your growing style and area/room(s). Frankly I don't know much about the new LED lamps available, I have an older 5 spectrum UFO that sucks ass... I don't care for the visible light spectrum it casts. It's purple. Purple light makes it hard to monitor your girls health, imo. Plus, LEDs will bleach your plants if they're too close, so you have height issues to deal with. And LEDs still cost too much, initially. If the LED were the type of super bright white light they're using in street lamps now, then that would be something to consider. The spectrum might not be perfect, but that amount of intensity would make up for it, especially if you could get a couple of different types, say a 3000k for flower and a 6000k for grow.

You can get an case (25) of good quality of T5 bulbs for under $120 on Ebay. Also, most fixtures come with your choice of grow or bloom bulbs to start you out. You can mix and match the light spectrum with some some of the specialty bulbs if you choose. And like LED, heat is easier to control with T5 than HID.

IDK, shelling out $1200 up front for LEDs vs. $600 for T5? Lets see:

$600 for 3 8 bulb fixtures w/lamps + a case of 25 T5 lamps per year at $120, all from Ebay = $1200 over 7 years.

It would take 7 years to before the T5 becomes more expensive than a pair of LED fixtures.

The drawback would be the buds from a T5 likely won't be as dense as from HID, and probably less dense than LED. But that's almost as much dependent on strain and growing style.

My first grow several years ago netted 6 oz. from a single 6 lamp 324w T5. 4 plants less than 3 ft tall (including container) in a 2.5' x 5' grow closet. If you're good, you could probably pull 16 oz./month using the three fixture set up above in a perpetual grow op.

I have an 11 band 300 watt led and 2 white led fixture collecting dust in my tool shed. standard T5s worked much better.they grow faster and busher and look healthier. the folded T5s (pl-l55) work great in a small closet grow where I don't have room for 4 footers.even the author of a popular book on cannabis cultivation admits that plant look unhealthy even tho she uses and advocates led grow lights. there is a reason commercial greenhouses don't use them. they use MH or fluorescents to grow tropical plant indoors. and modern T5HOs are as efficient as MH at power levels up to 400 watts. but there is an old saying "quality sells itself" if leds were as good as some people claim the professional, commercial greenhouses would be using them

JoeyV I am one of the first contributors to this thread, and feel compelled to share a better way

My experience growing quality meds, not quantity, is...

I needed to replace my grow bulbs every 3rd grow and flower bulbs every grow. The more red phosphors, the shorter their life

Quality bulbs run > $20 per, so forgive me for trying to educate the T5 club

Has anyone tried the wave-point ultra growth waves? I was thinking they might be a good alternative to the zoo med flora suns. Any thoughts?

tried them.less output and much slower growth then standard 6500k t5ho bulbs.same results with zoo med.deep red is only needed in large amounts to stimulate chlorophyll A when you don't have violet light (425-440 nm ) in your spectrum. when you stimulate chlorophyll A to S2 excitation. with violet light it absorbs CO2 and releases O2. it also emits (plant fluorescents) 660 nm light. this is the only know pigment that uses deep red and it only uses it in the absence of violet light. when driven to S2 excitation the drop from S2 to S1 releases energy that is used for photosynthesis.the energy released by the drop from S1 to resting state in this case is discarded as red light emitted by the plant. conventional 6500k/ 3000K lamps gave me much better results than the broad spectrum aquarium lights. home depot sell 4 bulb 4 ft t5 fixture for $89. 1000 bulbs has a great price on tubes and ballast and I found the eiko or plusrite bulbs last much longer than the bulbs sold as grow lights for a much higher price on ebay or at hydro shops

has anyone here tried autoflowering plants. they look interesting but I have no experiance with this kind of plant and have read that they are very sensitive to stress

interesting set up but why are you using cfls for toplighting? T5s would give you more light and less heat for the same amount of power.I have seen some impressive grows with cfls and they are cheap but you are already using tube for side lighting
because i was able to make a decent hood for cheap doing so. This is my second grow so I'm experimenting as I go along.20140625_193538.jpg
