cleaning up-winterizing dark BHO

So i have some dark looking wax that i got a decent deal on and want to try to winterize it on a small scale. I plan to take a few grams and dissolve into everclear, put it into the freezer for a couple of days, pour through a coffee filter while still in the freezer, then evap the results. How much everclear should i be using per gram, and can I just use a glass or pyrex measuring cup for this?

Just make sure its covered in alcohol. You also want to agitate the oil/wax in the alcohol so it dissolves quicker.

hmm, ok. So i should be thinking more in terms of shot glasses for just a couple of grams then?

Yeah shot glass will work. I use a pyrex plate that way I can spread it and it drys quicker.

bought a few mini measuring cups for this, 2 grams in 2Tbsp of everclear about 11 hours in the freezer so far...

you are picking up a ton of water should put it in a ziplock bag to keep it from sucking up water in the air.

I am assuming(hoping) the filter will catch the majority of the water, as it will be in solid form when straining as long as I keep it in the freezer when straining. Is this the case? I was thinking of connecting two of these measuring glasses on top of each other with the filter separating them, so that I can just flip it upside down once frozen to strain.

ton of water was a relative term but I made a little something for this situation. are you handy with a soldering iron?

The relative humidity in the freezer is close to zero. You're not going to pick up any water in the freezer but when you bring it out to evaporate off the alcohol it will pick up water from the air. It's not really a big deal at all. You can just pour off the white emulsion that forms with the water or you can just let the water evaporate off.
Take extra measures to fully purge the alcohol out though. Evaporation happens at the surface so spread it into the thinnest film possible and place into an oven. Keep temps below 150°F and you should get some great shatter.

Lol, I had 12 of those exact jars in my hand and would have done something very similar (and still might). If they sold in quantities<12, I would not have ended up deciding on the little measuring cups I am using now. About that, started draining last night, and seem to have lost a lot of volume. Is this all waxes etc, or am i correct in my fear that the coffee filter is absorbing a relatively large amount of my goodies in this test?

hmmmm I wouldn't think you lost much of the goodness, you did basically the same thing I do when I do that and I lose a fair to mid amount of volume and never seemed to notice/care. I am not the expert on this but I would say you are finished and ready for the evap stage

evapping now... Looking at this filter, I can see where a lot of my volume went in all the light colored fats and lipids. I am curious about the darker stuff around the edges too. This is all stuff I didnt want to dab, right?

looks like a little around the edges maybe I don't know for sure and no I would not try to dab that

also look at yard sales and thrift stores for glass. cheapest way to go

yeah was not looking to try the stuff around the edges, more curious as to what it could be. Would I be better served using another filtering method, like actual lab filter paper or even a really fine ss mesh, or is this just standard winterization goop and par for the course?
