To properly make a cannabinoid infused topical . You should first start with hash of whatever your preffered method. The cleaner the hash the better in terms of efficiency. If you want chlorophyll go buy some and drink it. If you want to feel psychological effects and many of the medicinal effects it must be decarbed, this should be done over a double boil. Topicals are great for localized swelling and pain, cancers etc. If in a proper carrier it will absorb quickly and efficientl. saturate the hot oil mix with hash oil very slowly. In layman's terms, this oil mix is simply acting as a carrier. thc itself is extremely lipophillic with a very high log p, this is sort of a measurement of a compounds lipophilicity, compounds distribution coefficient is used in conjunction with other aspects of the pharmacokinetics to determine how the body reacts to a drug. It has to cross through and absorb to be taken up

thc has a logp of about 7
In practice optimum colonic absorption is 1.32, intestinal is 1.35, oral 1.8, Cns 2, percutaneous at 2.6 and sublingual 5.5
Lowering the polarity will drastically enhance (thats kind of confusing, really were raising the polarity but lowering the value above) .....enhance absorption, this is why you can't just rub hash on you.. smaller carbon chains are more polar as well as being absorbed through the skin easier. an unsaturated fatty acid is more polar, ch bond vs cc bond
(Again, trying to keep this simplified)
Oleic is great.
Unrefined sunflower oil with 5-10% etoh or pg will enhance permeation. This is the best route without chems you probly don't know where to get (and the use of is more questionable)
It is naturally rich in antioxidants not that it really matters too much. Sunlight and to a lesser extent heat are what you worry about. A typical brown glass bottle in room temp will be good for almost 2 years depending on desired affects. Remember it will naturally decarb. Thca will have a half life of about 90 days in that environment.

Coconut oil should only be used orally for several reasons..

The sugar alcohol glycerin should be used sublingually

That's about all I really have to say....
Route of administration effectively alters the high by changing the rate of cannabinoid absorption with cbd being more polar than THC...oh and one more time, by not decarbing your not getting high yes, but many medicinal affects come from cannabinoids entering the brain. Not just cb receptors either. There are many pathways some indirect that facilitate the magic of our plant

I'm done now.hope that all made sense, my high self.... not gonna post anymore on these threads

Thank you for the post and trying to keep it simple. I will be re-reading this to get a better understanding. A little over my head right now. Basically THC is a Square peg and our skin is a round whole. So the sunflower oil helps slip the block in, if I understand correctly.

I was wondering... Has anybody done a sided by side comparison with and with out cannabis infused coconut oil? I am wondering if the same ingredients minus the cannabis if it would still give relief.

What if it is just the tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil?

Okay So I made the Cannabis Salve last night.

Here is the basic recipe in case any one wants to try.
32 Oz Coconut Oil
2 Oz Cannabis Trim
4 Oz Beeswax (could probably do it with 3 oz)
2 Tbs Vitamin E
2 Tbs Eucalyptus Oil
2 Tbs Tea Tree Oil (Could probably do 1 Tbs, It has a very potent smell)
1 Tbs Lavender Oil

Night before. Set Crock pot on low add in all coconut oil and cannabis. I also add a little water to get better coverage. Cook this for 2 hours while stirring every once in a while. Strain and pour oil into some kind of container (I used a glass pitcher) place in the fridge overnight to allow coconut oil to solidify and separate from the water.

Next Day. Pull out coconut oil from fridge and scrape bottom of Coconut Oil puck (usually has some crud on it). Put the puck into the crock pot again on low (once the oil is hot I take the temp down to warm). Now 1 ounce at a time start adding the bees wax. I used 4 oz, you can certainly use more or less depending on the consistency that you are looking for.

How do I check consistency... Well, pour some of the mixture into a small cup and cool it. I used the freezer and fridge for this. You want to try to get close to room temp because this is what it will stay at.

Final steps: Now we can put our Vitamin E (which is our preservative) and other essential oils. Once everything is mixed we can start filling up our little 4 oz. mason jars. I used a scale to keep things consistent. Place jars in the fridge overnight and you are ready to rock.

Side Note: Try not to drop your lid into the mix... It is difficult to clean.

Hey Qwiso,

I have a question for you regarding this, as I am getting ready to buy some sunflower oil and do some experimenting. The chemistry portion is over my head so I am wondering if you wouldn't mind putting in your 2 cents...

If i follow basically the same recipe as listed above should I just add some sunflower oil to my overall recipe or trade out the coconut oil for sunflower oil entirely?

I am thinking just add sunflower oil to the whole recipe but I am not 100%. Can I use sunflower oil to extract THC?

I wouldnt use an oil to extract the thc and other compounds, you can. Thats how most people make butter and whatnot, but it is pretty inefficient. And breaks down alot of the goodies that are retained. You have to use high heat and its slower to go into solution.

Its alot better to start out with hash, whatever type you prefer and slowly add to hot oil getting it as saturated and potent as possible.
However if your trying to stay sober while using it, thc is much less stable than cbd, note that it does have pain relieving properties most affected is nervous
But seperating sunflower oil from water will be a bit more of a nuisance

If you still intend to use this mostly for topical uses, a high amount of sunflower oil will help slide the thc into your skin. Its a little more difficult to work with i suppose as its not easily a solid. But thats just an inherent problem with the short chain lengths that you want.
Decarbed thc etc doesnt readily absorb through the skin, increasing the polarity helps the thc migrate through skin secretions from the solution...well anyway

Yea you could substitute all or a sizeable portion of coconut oil to help, also adding some ethanol or pg from like an ecig will help.

Well hope you got something , i kind of repeated alot i already said though
You could drop the added vitamin e if you wanted, i would substitute for oregano essential oils, not that it would hurt just the oil is already high in antioxidant and not really necessary
There are lots of oils that could help, keep an eye out for skin irritation
