Canada-Vancouv DRUG BUSTS HELP LIFT VERNON'S 'DARK SHADOW'

VANCOUVER -- With its mild climate and modest population barely nudging 40,000, nestled near the shores of three lakes surrounded by hills, the Okanagan city of Vernon might well have been a stand-in for Pleasantville.

Recently, however, the otherwise-idyllic community turned dark, beset by five homicides and two suspicious disappearances in less than a year.

Now, Vernon may be able to reclaim its place in the Okanagan sunshine after a series of dramatic police raids during the weekend that, according to RCMP, broke the back of a large, violent drug ring known as the Greeks.

"I think everyone can all breathe a little easier," Corporal Henry Proce said yesterday. "When you have seven unsolved murders in a town this size in such a short period of time, it does raise a few eyebrows.

"From a police point of view, this is a good news story. The dark shadow is gone."

A local newspaper headlined the police swoop as Vernon's big, fat Greek takedown.

Cpl. Proce said the gang controlled a vast cocaine trafficking network linked to organized crime and extending as far as the Alberta line.

Those who got in the way were killed, he said.

"Whenever a body turned up, the Greeks were sending a message. While a lot of ordinary people were totally unaware of what was going on, these people terrorized others in their own subculture."

The swirl of violence RCMP have attributed to the Greeks began in the summer of 2004 with the disappearance of 47-year old David Marnuik. Police have said he was abducted.

Other alleged victims include Ronald Thom and his 39-year old girlfriend, Belinda Scott; Jeffrey Drake, 60; Thomas Bryce; Robert Hewison, 43; and Stanley Polak, 33, who is still missing.

Four men -- Andre Raymond, Dale Spies, Leslie Podolski and Sheldon O'Donnell -- appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in Kelowna yesterday afternoon, charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mr. Marnuik.

Peter Manolakos, the former owner of a Vernon pizzeria, who police accused of being the gang's ringleader, is facing a charge of manslaughter in connection with Mr. Marnuik's death.

Defence lawyer Alexander Watt rejected police accusations that his client, Mr. Manolakos, is the leader of the purported gang.

"I don't think he's the leader of anything," he told reporters outside the courthouse.

The five men are further charged with committing murder and manslaughter "at the direction of, or in association with a criminal organization known as the 'Greeks.' "

Along with 10 other individuals, including one woman, the five accused also face a wealth of charges relating to the trafficking of cocaine and marijuana.

Police say their investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.

The rash of drug-related killings is not the only grim news to hit Vernon in recent years.

The city was rocked two years ago by the death of Bill Abramenko, 75, during a violent home invasion.

Eric Norman Fish, charged with first-degree murder in the case, had been staying at Howard House, Vernon's controversial halfway house at the time.

I have to agree. Even though, there is a lot of cops with asshole attitudes, they are still here to protect us from the more dangerous elements of society. Remember, the police must always answer to the community. Especially, if the officials are elected. Unfortunately, the police ranks draw many uneducated and power hungry people to join them. That's why the best cop is one had fun in their youth. These guys end to be cool and see pot as no threat to society. But, these people are very few and far between. As, for the group that was arrested, they got what they deserved. Violence and hard core drugs is a plague on society and needs to be eliminated.

I rolled thru Vernon about 15 years ago it was just hippy stoners and even more acid heads. I was hoping that wasn't the image they were talking about changing but I guess the gangs got in there somewhere since.

The dark shadow isn't gone; this article is a nice little lie to comfort the people in Vernon. It even says in the article that the ring leader is still walking around, free as can be. How can the shadow be gone if the man (or family) is still standing. They were the ones creating the shadow!
Dirty & bloody drug money must buy the best of best defense attorneys!
I'm so disappointed in the justice system.

I do not use or endorse "hardcore drugs", however the reason there is violence is BECAUSE they are illegal. It's not, nor should it be, my business to make another person stop shooting heroin, nor to tell a cop he can't be an alcoholic or for a cop to tell me I can't smoke a joint.

Alcohol during prohibition was still available, but often the procurement was through gangsters. When alcohol prohibition was lifted, the violence ended.

The "war on drugs" perpetuates violence in two ways. One, the cops use lots of violence, guns and propaganda, EVERY DAY to force peaceful people to behave a certain way. The second is sometimes rival gangs do get into turf wars.

Restricting a desired substance, has created a lucrative black market. The black market is really an extension of one of the principles of a free market, except for the illegal part.

Bottom line, whenever there is a demand, the supply will be there, legal or not. Make it legal, end the violence from gangsters and cops.

I'm crazy, but i think...
governments should sell cocaine like they give out methadone, interview people, track their usage, leave them alone if there's no problem.
takes the money out of gangs hands
stops the killing in Mexico
re-focus society on it as a health issue and removes it from the criminal system.

Hey guys you know what everyone is all excited for th epolice etc? Does anyone not realize that the police are bigger scum bags then any of the people mentioned above (Aside from the police informants) I actually know this from experience because i am from Vernon, B.C and I have done time with each and every one o the guys mentioned above including Ron Thom who was the biggest scuz bag of them all and sold people out so he could extend his own drug use and drug dealing. Peter Manolakos was one of he nicest people i have ever met. It was actually Ron Thom who introduced me to him in KRCC years back before he started to sell everyone out. I agree some people may have different ways of handling things and ya maybe no one should take someone elses life, but lets recall back to he very first thing we are ever taught as people from the time we are 2 years old. No one likes a tattle tale!. As far as I am concerned people have the God given right to use and abuse what ever substance they choose. All you good little religious people are gonna come on here and say what TERRIBLE things these people have done? Well what about the rights given to us from God that the police like to take away? I offer 1000% support to Peter and his friends and yeah I hope they stop doing some of the things they are doing but hey an people are forcing them to do these things. Our Government kills millions of people every second and we call it patriotic etc. It just amazes me the way the media forces people to think in such a one sided manor. Hey Pot is going to be legal soon and then when someone does something related to pot that was formerly illegal and the police do nothing this time. Please tell me why it is different? Because some idiot in a suit decided that it was now okay? Give me a break people. I myself a glad someone is finally stepping up to the plate and taking matters into heir own hands.

Pillar of the community... Successful business owner, philanthropist. Everything comes clean after a wash. I'm so glad you support your local torturers, drug peddlers and murders.
I agree, people should be able to do and say as they please, provided they do no harm. Hindsight is always 20/20. I myself knew Belinda Scott and as it turned out she and Mr. Thom were nothing more than bystanders. Exercising their drug habit, standing in the wrong spot. I do find it interesting that you knew all parties involved and immediately distanced yourself from Ron, me thinks ya doth protest to much.
Have some respect for the families who have lost so very much, children that will grow up without a mother.
Next time you are feeling charitable or wanting to volunteer...try reading a bit, geting all your facts straight. Then
shoot your mouth off, you hippacrate
"tattle teller".
Have some respect for the victims, the families, the police, your community, yourself and for society. Lord knows I pity you.

wow... it's like a Sopranos rerun... scary how some peeps will go to any extreme to shut down the competition!

Yet, using threats of force to "shut down competition" is the exact business model of all coercion based governments AND gangs, but I repeat myself.
