can you tell the difference between MH buds and HPs Buds?

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the quality and light spectrum of any given bulb. Saying HPS does this and MH does this is not accurate to all of the HPS and MH bulbs.

i just swapped out my 400 hps for the MH to see how much more potent my buds will get ... i may rotate the bulbs every week as well (depending on my lazyness)

ive had strictly hps for flowering the past 5 months so hopefully ill be able to notice a difference

I am actually going to switch one of mine back to MH this morning. I'll run 1 400w HPS and 1 400w MH.

I won't have a control to test against, but from what I've been reading over the past week or so has led me to believe that this method is valid.

I am going to swap them today. The only thing that I think will be annoying is the swapping back and forth. I'm going to have to swap the lights back and forth every other day or so to keep them all happy I would think. I could just do 1 week on one side and one on the other, but I think I'll do it every other day. I am just over 6 weeks into flowering so this should be the last 2-3 weeks and I think that's a good time make this switch.

only feels like a few pages ago people were mocking me and telling me hps is the only way
HPS is the only way if you only have one light.

But I have two lights, and I usually use them both as HPS, but I'm going to try it this way. Do you suggest rotating the lights? How often do you rotate yours?

you know the range of color temperature for mh and hps bulbs almost meets, there are lots of mh bulbs around the 4000k range which flower really well too.

I have flowered solely on mh before and gotten nice big tight buds. I admit not as big as hps but the difference isn't as much as you would think.

I'm not saying any bulb is better than an other, but, it isn't the only way if you have one bulb, if people are flowering on cfl's you can be damn sure a mh will flower good too

Hortilux Blue MH, IS better then most other bulbs. There is a reason for the price.

But given the choice between the two, would you really choose HPS? I'm not saying it DOESN'T work. If I had to chose between CFL or MH I would chose the MH. But given the option to flower with only 1 bulb the general consensus is to flower with HPS. I know that the general consensus doesn't make it right, but there is no wrong or right. People use what they choose to use based upon the information they are given. Therefore the fact that general consensus is to use HPS I would say that it's a generally accepted practice to flower with an HPS bulb.

Works with MH, but not as well for what most people are looking for.

Hi folks,

I skipped over the last 10 pages or so as I don't much care for nonsensical bickering. So if my post states something already said, sorry...

Anywho... Neither HPS nor MH bulbs will elicit much of a different impact on the overall potency of the plant. You see, essentially, potency comes from THC, which is found soley in trichrome growth on the plant. Thusly, to increase potency, you must increase trichome growth. However, in order to increase the trichome growth, you have to ask yourself, what purpose do trichomes serve the plant?

The answer is that trichomes serve two main purposes: A) the sticky nature of the trichome and narcotic presence of THC within help to fend off predators from devouring the plant and B) the trichome growth helps sheild the plant from harmful spectrums of light that occur naturally in nature, such as UVB.

So, by putting 2 and 2 together, we will see that since A) MH & HPS bulbs don't attack the plant and B) they don't produce much light from the UVB spectrum, neither one will really have an outstanding impact on the trichome production.

However, I will say this: if you are seeing a difference in your plant's potency from a MH vs a HPS, it could be due to a difference in lumens produced by the two, or even the plant's position under the light. In the same manner that trichomes protect the plant from harmful spectrums of light, they also protect the plant from an abundance of light. Too much energy from light beating down on the plant is harmful as well.

Anyways, if you're looking to increase potency, try running to your local pet store and picking up a few UVB rated bulbs that are used for reptile cages. Believe me, the addition of the UVB spectrum will not cease to amaze you.

I thought the reason that MH produced more potent bud was because it emits some UVB...

Never said they didn't produce any... But the amount they produce is minimal. Check the specs of the bulbs on their website.

Of coarse there is a difference between hps and mh grown buds. You cant increase the potency of cannabis with light alright, you can only increase yeild with light, also you can only increase potency of the plant by the normal maturation of the plant. When the plant reaches peek maturity(around 70% color change) then it will start to lose potency (a result of exposing the trichs to light for too much time, degrades potency.)

just an opinion but i find i have the best redults with this setup - 150w cool white cfl ( seedlings, upto a week, 6 babies)

- 250mh for rest of veg ( 3 week average )

- 600hps dual spectrum, 2 26w reptisun 10.0uv

i run the uvb for 4 hours at the start of flower,

running up to 8 hrs end of flower.

with this setup i grow what is known between me and my boys as

ueber stinking weed, just my 10 cents worth.

Have you read through this thread at all ???

this is what has been established
MH bulbs put out some UVB ... which more trichs are grown to protect against = more potency

HPS -more light- bigger buds

If anyone is interested in the MH/HPS topic, you might want to check out my grow journal. I am using a Growzilla hood, encasing 1 1000w HPS and 1 1000w MH. It should be interesting to see what the combination of the two do...
